The thing that stresses me the most when I'm in the Philippines is the disorderly traffic. I feel exhausted at the end of the day each time we go out. I love being with relatives and friends, I enjoy the tropical fruits, the homegrown vegetables, poultry and meat, the green scenery and how warm and friendly my kababayans are. One thing that bothers me is the constant brownouts and the quality of medical services and facilities. And there are things that are not readily available in the Philippines that are expensive if you buy them online.

*pocket-friendly!?* i've traveled to thailand, indonesia, singapore, malaysia, hongkong, china, japan, australia, etc. i would say philippine food prices are "fairly average," or "less than" compared to these other countries, generally-speaking it's really hard to gauge though, considering that food prices vary from one place to another (from an upscale resto to laidback café or a nightmarket) but still, i would say philippine foods are alot "cheaper" yes, the word "cheap" is quite relative, 'coz you have to factor in overhead, labor cost, prices for the ingredients (from the market), etc. overall, philippine food prices, for me, are way "lower" (pocket or wallet-friendly) compared to other countries i mentioned above

That is my sentiment exactly, I love both countries however my parents retired in the Philippines and when both of them got sick, I spent a fortune to get them the proper healthcare, especially when my Mom fell and fractured her hip, I have to transport her from the province to Manila to get the necessary surgery. I have to buy everything from the gauze to the IV’s and in between. The ambulance transport was not the finest either, (I am speaking from experience). Both saved money from the daily food and housing but when you get sick the healthcare/hospitalization fees goes to the moon. 😢😱

The biggest point is food. Here in North America most of our foods are processed. Barely have anything fresh. Fruits and vegetables have to travel before it reaches our table. Compares to the Asian countries where most of their foods are freshly harvested all year round. Second, people here in North America don't want to see the how their foods are being prepped. Example, they don't want to see a fish being cleaned, a pig being butchered, cut and cleaned etc etc etc. They just want something clean all pre prepared and/or sanitized. 🙄 the taste is not the same because of all preservatives 😊

If you want quieter life, live in the provinces. The best thing to do is to take your journey from the Northern most part of the Philippines to the Southern most part of the Philippines. Dr. Laway - if you don’t like the direction that the United States is heading, and you were concerned about inflation, then you have to choose a side: Republican, or Democrat. It’s clear to me that based on what I’ve seen in several videos that I’ve watched, you are conservative. As a Filipino American who has lived in the Philippines for three years as a teenager, I prefer the United States. But I understand why you chose the Philippines. One of my biggest concerns of trying to retire in the Philippines is the quality of advanced level healthcare. If you were diagnosed with cancer or other serious conditions that require the latest medications and treatments, you may likely wish you were back home. I totally agree with your points. Filipinos love life and they embrace it rich and poor alike. Noise and drivers are what I do not like in the Phil. too. But we are the friendliest and most easy-going people on the planet. Cost of living if you have dollar income will be very comfortable. Politics and corruption are bad but if you do not participate in it, you are okay. However they affect the poor Filipinos terribly. Have you been to Australia? It is beautiful, peaceful, clean. Aussies are friendly generally but there is racism too. Cost of living will be expensive because the economy is much smaller than the US and the dollar value exchange with USD is not much different. But I agree Europe is a much better alternative to the US because you can move from country to country by land and experience different cultures and cuisines.

Hi Dr. Laway, HELP! I have been planning my retirement and move to the Philippines for 3 years. I retired last month, sold everything and I have hotel reservations (non-refundable) and a ticket to fly out on June 15th (5 days from now). I have consumed a steady supply of vlogs during that time and have always heard that the Philippines does not require a visa before arriving from USA. I got online to find a return ticket and now see this entry that says that if one hopes to stay longer than 30 days, a visa must be acquired before leaving home. It also says that such visa must be applied for in person at the Philippine Embassy- ours is in Chicago, a day's distance each way. And even so, processing takes 2 to 10 days. In my desperation I have thought of coming for 30 days, then flying to Thailand where I have a family member, and making that application from an embassy there, but i don't know if one is required to make it from the home country. I hope you can advise me that all is not lost. I am retiring elsewhere because I cannot afford to retire here, but I will gladly pay you for a few words of advice. Help, I am running out of time. Sincerely, Freaking out in Kansas

Not since 2007. Last time I went I flew into the new airport in Sanford, which is about two miles from my old house. Completely different place. The airport used to be a huge tomato farm. So much growth it was almost unrecognizable. All the Orange groves I used to play in are gone as well, turned into subdivisions.

Americans are wonderful people. But with the advent of internet it has been easier for foreign countries interfere and just wreck havoc. And I believe that there is also a concerted organized effort to do that. Americans don’t do that to other countries, at least not organized. FOR SURE AMERICA DOES MORE GOOD TO THE WORLD THAN ANY OTHER COUNTRY.

Australia is in a terrible mess, and I don't like where the country is headed, too. So many people are homeless and living in tents or staying in boarding or share houses.

It seems to me that those of us who come from Anglo countries are all seeing the same thing, the governments abandoning the working and middle class. UK, Canada, Australia, USA, New Zealand. I think they are all sharing notes.

@DrLawaytravels The best place to be in the world now is Asia. Australia is completely finished. The government and corporations, banks, and real estate agents have destroyed the country, and there is no future here. New Zealand is also not good. As you say, the Anglo countries all seem to be decaying on a government and a societal level.

Did you hear that they may be making changes to the visa program in the Philippines, they may vote on ending the way x-pats stay in the Philippines, where they cannot stay for 3 years and leave and come back and start all over again, they may be changing that
@johnclark1469 Жыл бұрын
yes proposed 90 day limit tourist visas I guess before have to leave instead of extensions to 3 years. 🫤 that would hurt rental commitments there and cause many expats to leave. June vote- hope it wont pass.
@DrLawaytravels Жыл бұрын
I have seen the proposed changes back in January, but law making in the Philippines tends to change the final proposed laws several times between voting and implementation. So hard to say what the final changes will be if any.

If you are a native born American, and you have to ask that question? The answer is NOT, the United States.
@frosty3693 Жыл бұрын
Your answers were apreciated but leaves me with a question. Can a US expat still vote in the USA absentee? And no, I am not exhorting you to "pick a side" and vote I was curious, and lazy, as I could just ask my local election people.
@DrLawaytravels Жыл бұрын
You absolutely can vote absentee as an expat. Just contact your election department well ahead of the date and they will get you a ballot. I have done it twice now. As a side note my Wife who is Filipina got a ballot to vote absentee when living in America for the Philippines!

Great video. It is always easier for an American to say and doing because of the money in the bank. Most from Philippines wants to go to America to make money and many will only come back to Philippines just for a visit. Philippines is good for retirement for some. The problem is the danger on the road, the burning, the excess noise from chickens, roasters, dogs, burning garbage and rice field. In the city over crowded. America is a paradise. But wait because of the communist taking over like Biden usa and Trudeau canada Philippines is starting to look way better. What make the strength of Philippines is the population same ethnicity and few strangers. Example in canada immigration and refugees are taking the country and changing everything there. Flooding the country and you want see that in Philippines 😅. The people are very nice very friendly to strangers in Philippines. If a person come with money and get a big land that should be good to get your little paradise if not you will be living with the noise most of the time. My filipina said to me better go with money because it would be a harsh place to live. She was right on that money is everything to make yourself a nice home.
