I've got an M140i Auto and no way would I want a Golf R over one. All I needed to do was watch KZbin clips of the M140i repeatedly blitz pretty much all the hot hatch competition in rolling races to know its what I wanted. And there's always the option of a stage 1 up to 440hp as the engine is in a low state of tune. I want fun, lairy and bloody quick...ain't a Golf R.

yes but as a daily the 4wd and better mileage on the golf is so good! if it was me tho i would pay the extra for an rs3 bc that thing is inbetween the 2 (fuel economy wise) and that sweet 5 cyl. Still tho the golf is still an amazing car

@@TasimanaOG I get what you mean about the 4wd on the Golf R, although I do think drivers of powerful cars have become a bit fixated on it. In reality a 2wd is fine 99% of the time, if it rains you just back off (and yes, off the lights and round corners get trounced by R drivers!). In winter fit a set of decent winter tyres and in the UK you'll never get stuck! Summer tyres are crap even on 4wd in ice and snow so I'd still want them on a 4wd in winter anyway. But in the dry the rwd on mine is such fun!!! Way more than an S3 or Golf R, and it's sooo much quicker. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if mid range it keeps up with an RS3. And then I've got the nuclear option of a stage 1 for 600 quid taking it to 450hp!! Fuel wise currently reading 32.6mpg average, that's having a laugh occasionally, rest of time being sensible. But we are talking at least a couple of foot down 'blast moments' on each journey!! Anyway, re the daily bit I am cheating!! I bought mine to use kind of the same as a modern classic, it lives in the garage and won't come out in rain, snow, bad ice etc. I'm lucky enough to have a 2019 Toyota Rav4 with 4wd, a 2005 4wd Kia Sorento for the horse box and an old Citroen BX diesel which runs with winter tyres all year round and that thing goes anywhere in winter with em on, snow too deep? Raise the suspension! 🤣. If the weather's crap, one of those 3 gets used.

If you turn the traction control fully off on the Golf R they are very very playful, to say you don’t have to drive them is a joke, maybe you were never pushing it hard enough? 4wd drifting around corners takes great skill, you can dance around corners on the throttle with slight steering inputs, My cousin has an M140i and his driving skill is similar to mine, yet on the twisty stuff his M140i cannot get anywhere near me.

Thats the point, it's got a different diffuser at the back, and front is facelift... but underneath its a 3.0 flat six turbo producing on record around 360hp.. BMW rate the car at 340 but dyno runs will confirm on every bmw they are actually around 360hp mark... that gives you a true 0-60 on about 4.2 And a rolling acceleration that even rivals close to super cars... its 500kg lighter than the R too and doesn't need a synthetic exhaust sound because the twin exhaust even resonated give that perfect pitch and burble of pops and bangs as standard.. is the 140i perfect no... but its a animal that in ther real world scenario is near to impossible to beat... thats what makes it a great car and for a 1 series something that can't be underestimated. It's nice having a sheep in wolfs clothing... but better to have a wolf in sheep's clothing... looking innocent until it red lines at 7k rpm and shooting ahead.

The M140i is fine when it's not pissing down, so it's ok for Britain occasionally. Put your foot down in the wet, and the traction control will constantly be on. Good luck getting it off the line cleanly in the wet too. The Golf R will be a fast disappearing speck on the horizon by the time the BMW gets traction.

I like the Golf R, but they are as common as muck and seem to attract the wrong kind of attention. That 6 cylinder engine is a masterpiece as well, where as the Golf is just an average sounding 4 cylinder with a fake sound generator.

You've bought a car that you will constantly need to tweak and adjust to meet your expectations, the engine is too much for the chassis, 6 cylinder and rear wheel drive counts for nothing when you can't properly exploit it. These are seriously compromised and to make matters worse it's fitted with a traditional auto. The Golf is competent out of the box it just needs a bit more to make it fun. My advice, skip the mk8 get yourself something properly fun while you are young and don't need the practicality. 👍

@@hampshirephotowhen I was younger I bought a z4m coupe, same premise rwd, powered by the awesome s54 and manual. I kept chasing perfection with it, modifying bits and pieces but the problem was that whatever I did, another flaw was uncovered. I fear the same applies to this and that's behind kind, at least the z4 was an M car deep down and special looking thing at that. You've made a couple of videos on this topic now, I know it's difficult to get content at the moment but it tells it's own story. The R is a better car, when pushed you see it's merits, but maybe not the answer, you've been there done that. The M2 was the obvious choice after the R but maybe you should play around with the Gt86 some more it's going to be a more rewarding car than that BMW. I would love to suggest the new Supra but I've heard the rear end is very badly set up. Listen to both sides and make your own choices. 👍

I have just purchase a MK7.5 Golf R DSG and changed from a BMW 220d with map and the thing that instantly hit me is the build quality difference and spec, the VW is miles ahead in both departments. The wizardry of the Golfs ride being so compliant on B roads and yet comfortable is the key point for me, the BMW was in M Sport trim and I always found the ride harsh and the way it dealt with uneven roads skittish and not confidence inspiring. I’ve had many RWD cars within my car history including an S2000 and Lotus and you just can’t get from points A to B quicker on UK roads that a compliant 4WD and the Golf R reminds me of my old Impreza P1 in terms of dynamics but in a comfortable grown up car. The DSG box is also wonderful compared to the ZF box in BMW. I personally think you made a mistake and really look into an M2 Competition before purchasing as in real world terms aren’t much quicker than the Golf R and carry all of the usual BMW issues such as dated interior and are way to stiff for the UK roads. Before anyone jumps on me for being a VW fan boy, this is the first VW I’ve owned and always loved BMW’s, I have driven an M2 Competition that a friend owns and he has just purchased a spring kit to make the car softer as it really is just too hard for B road driving. M2 is a thing of thuggish beauty though!

Avoid buying the same colour car..... sounds obvious I know, however particularly in you’re case as a KZbin Channel featuring the latest vehicle which again is blue isn’t ideal (just my opinion). I always miss my last car, so much so I went from Golf R mk7 to Golf R mk7.5 Moving forward perhaps you could attempt more of the mods yourself, invest the help of a mechanically minded mate and take the channel a different direction..... from what I’ve seen on KZbin this format with you’re budget would be a winner..... Drove an M135i (2016) manual and honestly it was such a letdown! Rubbery, artificial shift and non existent steering feel but spot on seating position. Is a golf R any better? Jude Mason BMW manuals are a bit crap; mine have always been rather grumpy when cold. Their EPAS isn’t the best either unfortunately. Still preferred it to the R, but mine had the ZF8.

I love fast cars too, but I also cycle - a lot of us do both. If a 21 year old in a 300 horsepower car comes up behind me on a narrow lane I would absolutely take the middle line. It is safer than getting shoved into the side! Have some respect. Your ton and a half of metal accelerating 0 - 60 in 4 seconds would annihilate a cyclist or pedestrian. Arguably you shouldn't be driving during lockdown and talking to a camera could well be reckless or dangerous driving. Conversely cycling is legal. When did you get your licence?

There is no replacement for displacement, once you drive a V6 or Straight 6 or an even better V8 while you can in this eco mad world and u will never want a four cylinder again. For next car try one of the following, When board with the m140. M2, M3, M4, M5 any of those. Rs3, rs4 if going to audi. Jaguar xfr, or c63 amg or vxr8 if going for a big V8.( I personally recommend the XFRS) One of these are a need to experience car owns, after the hot hatchbacks experience, before we are all forced to drive in silence with electric cars. You made a step up with the m140,well done. The golf r is good for what it is a no thinking quick to 60 car, but now you realise driving is much more than that just keep stepping up while you can.

It’s golf R for me looks better and more practical if you need to move some items or your a trades man and your van brakes down it gets you out of the shit as it has a hatch back. And it’s a vw it has a good following as well as some nice vw car shows to go to. Luke the golf R was in theory part of your business... It was old stock. You couldn't 'flog it' anymore. If you had a shop you would move any stock on that was a year old and buy new to gain more interest... you'll do the same with the bmw in a few months. Good business shoulders on you. I came for the Golf R content but I stuck around because you have a cool personality,your video making skills are great and your videos are always entertaining and done very well. I love all cars and love seeing people experience different cars so you won’t lose my sub over switching cars,lol!! Personally I like the m140i better than the Golf R. The Golf R is a great car but you feel more like you’re on autopilot driving it. Where as the m140i you are piloting it yourself like a fighter jet,lol!! I’m sure it’s more fun to drive than the VW.

Interestingly i'm going the other way. Just sold my 2017 M140i and looking to get into an R estate. First child on the way and there's no hope of getting all it's crap into the back of a 1 series! I'll definitely miss the sound of the B58 and BMW's Pro Nav is the best i've used. I'll miss it for sure but it's time for me to grow up a little :(

I looked at the R but it left cold; very fast, very effective but it never tickled my funny bits like the BMW did / does. The B58 engine is an absolute peach and dominates the experience but the BMW isn’t really a hot hatch, it’s much more GT.

Why dont you tune your cars aswel? JB4 ect? That would add to the content of your channel? You could of done that with the golf before selling it 😂 I've taken my stage 2, and the car feels completely different now.

So you cannot own the same for for ages, huh???? I've had my March 03 mkiv Golf 2.8L V6 4Motion since Sept03, which means I've owned it for almost 17years now and still enjoy it to this day. Even with 180k miles on the clock it still is a great car..... End of the day, if you like the car you have, why change it?????
