Prior to the Agricultural Revolution, modern humans would have never eaten a significant amount of carbohydrates. A diet where 30% of calories came from carbohydrates would be the upper end of even the most aggressive estimates. Thus modern human physiology and biochemistry evolved in and from this “low” carbohydrate, low glycemic, low insulin environment. The default diet of modern humans in the wild was a low carbohydrate diet. If we look at what the world eats now we can see carbohydrates dominate. But perhaps surprisingly there are just four “foods” that contribute to the majority of carbohydrate consumption: wheat, corn, rice, and sugar. Wheat, corn, rice and grains are thought of as ancient foods, daily staples since the beginning of human existence. But if you put all of human existence (since Homo habilis~3 million years ago) on a 24 hour clock, they didn’t become any significant part of the human diet until 5 minutes ago. For 23 hours and 55 minutes, humans didn’t eat wheat, corn, rice and grains. Besides requiring agricultural techniques to consume in any meaningful way, they are laced with plant toxins and antinutrients to prevent herbivores (and humans) from eating the plant’s offspring (the seeds). However, 5 minutes ago we took these plant seeds and made them a significant part of the human diet by artificially breeding and selecting for size and abundance. Then in the last second, during the Industrial Revolution, we began refining them, thereby further concentrating carbohydrates and their prepackaged toxins. In this last split-second we altered them even further. We began genetically modifying them. Now about 90% of major crops are GMO. We’ve engineered new traits into plants that wouldn’t otherwise naturally occur. We’ve engineered higher lectin loads to deter insects. We began spraying them with pesticides, insecticides, and fungicides. We’ve added preservatives, so we can store and ship these foods around the world. And all of these changes came with a heavy price: - We know sugar - and thus carbs - are addicting. - We know that carbohydrates are a nonessential nutrient. - It’s clear that simple sugars, fructose, and refined carbohydrates dysregulate our hormones and appetites, lead to overeating and obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes, and are implicit in the most deadly diseases today including heart disease, cancer, and dementia.

When I set out to find the root cause of my migraines and digestive problems, I'd never heard of a low carb or ketogenic diet. By a process of trial and error I worked out I should be eating high fibre, high fat, moderate protein, and no refined carbs at all. Then a friend explained the ketogenic diet and I realised other people had already done all that research. Still, I do know for sure that this is the healthy way for me to eat, and I'm not just following a fad.Not only have I said good-bye to migraines but I've also lost flab and loose skin and improved the lymphodema in my legs. It makes me mad that there is so much invested in keeping people sick and addicted to junk, including so-called 'healthy' bread and cereals. I know so many people who could benefit immeasurably from eating keto.

Yep, me too. I thought I was being sensible and eating all the right things based on the dietary advice the mainstream medics/dieticians gave. I can't stress enough that we have to listen to our own bodies and go with what works for us. My body has been trying to tell me all my life what it needs, but I trusted 'experts' instead. Glad you too have got on the right track for you. May you flourish in abundant health!

Absolutely right, Dr Ken. I discovered LCHF/keto for myself early 2016 and began that way of eating March of that year. I had no faith it would work as I had futilely pursued Low Fat High Carb diets of all kinds the previous four decades. I ended up obese, severely depressed and frightened of the future. I couldn't cope walking up stairs, at work, sleeping (apnea). Today I still practice LCHF/keto and maintain 100lb fat loss and a welcome return to health and wellbeing both physically and mentally. Wow! I am living my dream and I hope and pray that more and more people like me find this way of eating and embrace it like I did. Try it for a month, see how you feel. I guarantee it will be incredible.

Hey Doc. 69 year old carb addict here. On January 20, 2020 the scale read 208 lbs, I am 5'3". I was closer to death and I knew it. I think the charts I looked at in essence calculated I had a 76 year old body at that point. I started LCHF with intermittent fasting that day I started walking briskly for 30 minutes 6 days a week and increased my water intake. I use a Carb Manager app. On 7/16 I switched to KETO and OMAD and am loving it! There are so many rapid wonderful changes to my body beside the weight loss, (down 37 lbs & 6" off my waist so far) and it's so enjoyable to discover them. My energy is great and so is my mood & sleep. I firmly believe that KETO is prolonging my life. I haven't seen my doc since the Covid-19 madness began but I see her in 2 weeks. I attended a presentation by a nutritionist from our county diabetes association who claimed that calories from twinkies and calories from broccoli are the same. I called her on it and she told me that I don’t know what I’m talking about. I was so damned angry I just shut up because I didn’t want to cause a huge argument. I now regret that. She flat out recommended 150 grams of daily carbs as part of a healthy diet and then went on to tell us that diabetes is an epidemic where we live. The folks in the audience just looked at each other and shook our heads.

Of course it will after a meal. Eating just meat spikes your blood, have a look at carnivore Shawn bakers bloods, he’s pre diabetic yet only eats meat. Fat stops glucose leaving the blood and into your muscles. Stop eating fat, lose weight and glucose will be assimilated into the muscle. Fat causes fat, how many fucking studies do they have to conduct in order to prove that. It’s literally the same word

There are no essential carbs. There are essential fats. I had a heart attack at 50, had 3 stents installed. At 62 I needed a triple bypass. Tell me how a high carb low cholestrol, low fat diet helped me. In 12 years I did more damage to myself than I did eating badly for the 50 years prior. Modern research serves whom ever funds it. The grain and pharmaceutical industries have a lot of influence. I am done with theories. Since dropping carbs all of my blood work has improved, (I get it checked every 4 months).

Peter Rabitt, You should stop giving advice before you harm someone. Fruit and pasta send my blood sugar sky high. The diet you recommend for me would kill me. I never asked for your advice to begin with. I am doing and feeling well staying away from most carbs.

I just watched a video from Violin MD advising us that the keto plan results in a shorter life span. The article in lancet is exactly how she supported her position. As an RN, I am choosing to follow an MD with many years of experience vs a 2nd year resident. In today’s world, no matter what you believe right now, there is someone else with an opposite opinion and if you wait long enough what doesn’t cause cancer today will cause cancer tomorrow. We all have to make choices and I choose to follow keto today. I wish her the best, and thanks to you for all of your information.
