I live in Utah and was baptized into the Mormon church. So I have been exposed to this "CULT" all of my life. I did participate in a baptism for the dead. It really bothered me because if the dead people wanted to be baptized into the mormon church they would have done it before they passed away. I left the "CULT" shortly after this. 💯 would love to see this. Also, I think a deep dive into the MTC experience and how they brainwash young men and women to commit 18 or 24 months if their lives to "preaching the gospel" would be good content. I remember a lot of the MTC only talks and experiences being more intense than traditional content. The way they bring those young people in and build this false reality of the size of the church's global influence was particularly intriguing to me. I served a foreign mission and spent 2 months in that prison in salt lake. It truly felt like a prison with fencing around the entire compound.

Me being raised catholic, didn’t realize going to church for Mormon’s as a 3.5 hour ordeal. This service in particular people discussed going to see the new temple that had been built and everyone was getting super emotional over it, i for one was so confused. My friend introduced me to converts my age and it wasn’t until recently that I revisited the memories and realized her and her family were trying to convert me. Interestingly, I work in cultural resource management (archaeology, only the boring legal side) and how you feel about baptizing dead people is how I feel about moving their bodies. Most people are buried with love by their families. A new land owner or property developer shouldn’t be able to come in, decide their grave is inconvenient, and dig them up. But it happens quite frequently, especially in some states. And it’s also an open secret that most “moved” graves usually aren’t actually moved. There is just so much wrong with cemetery law in the US because so little is thought about the rights of the dead and their descendants. And I’m just out here protecting people’s graves because no one else will.
@JordanandMcKay3 жыл бұрын
Wow. We totally agree with your thoughts. I am glad you are doing that work!!

In UK ancient cemeteries have been discovered during building works, eg Black death mass graves, pre medieval etc. Built over centuries ago. There can be removals of more recent, eg victorian, burials but it is a big deal to do and remains re interred appropriately. A lot of small churchyard in urban areas have moved headstones to the perimeter allowing a green space to sit in. But still to be respected as a place of burial and records of who is where maintained.
@OMGitsaClaire3 жыл бұрын
@@helenr4300 in the US, especially in the Upland South areas I work in, small family farm cemeteries are most common with maybe 8-12 individuals and a use period of about 100 years maximum typically. Families would chose a portion of their own farmland to use as the family cemetery. With urban sprawl, more formerly agricultural areas are getting made into suburbs. The new estates hate having tiny old cemeteries in the middle of their brand new McMansions so they petition the local government to have them moved. It’s especially bad with enslaved cemeteries, which tend to largely be unmarked grave depressions. In states that have “abandoned cemetery” laws, removal is super common. That’s why I always recommend people wanting to visit their family cemetery send a certified letter to the property owner with the request. This creates a legally admissible paper trail so that the cemetery can’t be declared abandoned.
@helenr43003 жыл бұрын
@@OMGitsaClaire interesting how different histories create different issues. We can have a burial on one's own land and a few did, but most would go to the parish church in the village. But it makes sense in a community more scattered over vast areas that people used their farmstead. But of course the graves don't then come under any legal entity when family ends or disperses, whereas church graves are protected. Of course in parts of mainland Europe you only rent a grave for about 30 or 50 yrs and then dug up to go in an ossary,

Ran into this issue for my great grandfather. I've never been a Mormon but back in December I saw the temple work button on my great grandfather. I was very upset because his father was a Greek Orthodox Priest and my great grandfather came to the US and started a Greek Orthodox Church in MA. He was buried in the Greek Orthodox tradition. My Mormon friends didn't understand why I was so upset. I felt like they were not respecting his religious beliefs. I'm not Greek Orthodox but he was and know his beliefs were Greek Orthodox. The other thing is that there are nobody closely related to my great grandfather that are Mormons. Also when they worked on him they didn't have his correct name since when he came to the US he was given a different very common surname. The family then took their original Greek surname back later thus records were all over the place. This whole experience had me sour on Family Search and trying to understand what Mormons believe.

I just came here from FamilySearch and am feeling very “violated”. Its so odd because I traced my fathers line back to a relative born/died in England, like in late 1500s. She and husband notably had a grandson, listed as a “preacher” and who immigrated to Rhode Island before the Revolutionary War. That preacher was a founder of Providence and was a signer of some treaties and agreements. It was interesting learning a little about him, but I was flipped out to see that he, and his family members in England were baptized by LDS in the 1950s. It just feels very violent to do this to people who can’t even object. Not even their family can object.

I was living in Edmonton and was extremely lucky to be able to tour the temple there before it was dedicated. It was opulent to say the very least but also gorgeous and awe inspiring. I did find one thing odd. While we were touring the temple every time someone touched an object or chair anything they had a person appeared and chastised whoever had not followed the rules. They come over and kind of like put a sticky note on it I'm not sure why? The theory was because they had to replace everything that a non-sealed non-temple recommended person had touched. Not sure if that's true or not? But it's beautiful and the baptismal font I have no words, it made me speechless. I am so glad I have that opportunity before they dedicated the temple. I did feel a little harassed or stalked because I had crutches and only one leg was working at the time they had someone following me to make sure I didn't touch anything or didn't lean on anything. Could have been my imagination too.

There is nothing in church teaching or the Bible that backs that. I grew up non-LDS but alllllll of my friends were. I canceled my baptism the day before it was set to take place because I accidentally found all the temple shit online. It was 2001 and a lot tougher to find at the time. I'll never get anywhere near being lds again but the cultishness of it all still absolutely fascinates me. Keep up the great work, guys!!!!

I was actually thinking about suggesting this topic just yesterday! ETA: Okay, Pope John Paul II? As a "fallen" Catholic, that one sent me. 😂 Several years ago, the Vatican actually issued a directive over this issue to stop sharing parish registers with LDS genealogical societies and affiliated companies for them to digitize. It's understandable but unfortunately, this had made online genealogical research a lot harder for everyone with Roman Catholic ancestors... especially if they lived in a time when the religious records were the only records. It's a bummer.

Anndddd…that’s why I’m having problems helping someone whose family is/was/has been Catholic for more than 200 years find definitive proof she needs for her application for the Daughter’s of the American Revolution. Should be easy…but the DAR demands, and verifies, records. Only thing I could tell her was to contact the parish where her many times great grandfather was born and buried to see if they can help her find his baptismal record or the burial record. Luckily it’s still an active parish…but, yeah, not sure what kinds of records they have.

Also, this boyfriend had told me the ancestry website traced that he was related to a Norse god…I’m not kidding, he showed me the “record”. So the day I was in the primary class and I ran away I took off running down the street and I ended up sitting on a small brick wall and some young girl walking her dog she was probably a teenager and she found me and took me back. Luckily later on my mom and my aunt and my grandmother became Christians through Calvary Chapel and The Vineyard Churches. Mormons are very nice people but they are so misled about the book of Mormon and Joseph Smith it’s really sad. And all of the weird things they do it’s just unbelievable and it’s not even biblical

i had heard about these baptisms when i was young and considered them deeply strange. but growing up catholic in the US my family very much taught “listen we don’t know what any of the new religions are up too our families good here leave the old religions out of it” and leaving it there. But now hearing the repeated psychological warfare inflicted on the youth as base theology is so sinister. To have a faith so much rooted both on modesty and shame ALSO also sexual control just have youth just be wet and revealed to their peers and just old men they know as CLOSER TO GOD then them GET OUT OF HERE. plus oxygen deprivation plus repetition plus guilt and urgency. it’s really haunting. Decor is not what i was expecting the bulls are such a wild choice for a christian based religion too! I was taught bull statues where definitely not God like. Thank you for sharing your expertise and experience with us, growing up it i was always worried about how secretive it was with it deep and the weeds practices and i’m starting to put it together.

I have questions! (1) How is “celebrity” defined by the church? For instance I’m related to a Canadian hockey player who played professionally from 1929-1936. I’m also related to the inventor and patent holder for using fiber optics to transmit signals. He died in the 1980’s. Neither of these people have instant name or likeness recognition, but in their day or within their professions they might be well known. (2) How are people with the same name handled. In my paternal line, each generation has at least 1 male child named “Stephen Peter” or “Stephen Richard”. They didn’t use the Sr / Jr or I, II.

I said this in the last video, but I used to be a dedicated temple go-er as a teenager. I woke up every thursday morning at 3:30 am to be able to go with a group to the temple (Timpanogos) before school. We would get in line at 4:30 am, even though the temple didnt open til 5. I did this IN ADDITION to youth group temple activities. There is one week I remember going to do baptisms 3 times. I did the math, I have probably done around 800-900 baptisms for the dead. The most I ever did in one session was 15? Maybe? I don't know how they had enough time for everyone to do 15, but maybe it wasn't at the Timpanogos. I remember it happening though. Also, at the Timpanogos and provo temples, you do the confirmations for the same people you did baptisms for. I brought names that i did, did names my neighbors prepared and my grandparents prepared. I also did names the temple provided. I would feel bad for doing homework late on a Wednesday night, because I worried it would interfere with going to the temple the next day because I wouldn't get enough sleep. Sometimes i still did. There were many nights where i got 2 hours of sleep instead of like 5 because i felt like i had to go to the temple.

I'm a former public school teacher. Anyway- we used to team teach and would have the same group of students for three years. One time we had an extremely high number of Mormon students on our team. They were all good kids. However- we'd occasionally get the pressure put on us to attend 'teacher appreciation' things at the local ward (we never went). One of my coworkers (an atheist) actually told one of the girls that while he appreciated all of the invites- there was no actual need for him to become LDS. He then told her that once he died she could be baptized for him and that would take care of it. I was amazed at his boldness- but he pulled it off with just the right amount of humor that she wasn't offended by it.

Thank you so much for talking about this. My mom was raised Mormon but didn’t let me go to church until she thought I was old enough to think for myself. But I think the indoctrination runs deep, because she’s always been very defensive of the LDS because she was brought up that way. I remember when she first told me about posthumous baptism (she mentioned Anne Frank). I was absolutely disgusted and told her how disrespectful I thought it was, and she got a bit defensive.
