Do Motorcycle Rallies Suck Today??? 30 Years of Rallying - What has changed???

My father started taking me to motorcycle rallies on the back of his bike when I was a teenager. My first Sturgis was over 30 years ago, and I feel like I have seen some of the major changes that some would say has made rallies not as fun as they were in the good old days. I’m 50 and have been going to sturgis for over 25 years. I use to be the young guy hitting the rally. I agree with all your points as they are right on. Technology and money have really changed over the years. I use to make fun of the rv’s and toy haulers. I still camp in a tent but I get the toy haulers and rv’s as I get older. Have fun and who cares what other people say.

I grew up with my middle class grandparents. I became an adult. Made POOR financial choices. I finally got my first Harley 02 road king police at 38, single and a teen son, 16 month daughter single dad. Piss on the haters! I guess instead of making tons of money my life choice was 20+ years in the military defending all the people so you could go to rallies and enjoy your freedom as an American. Yes Vietnam wasn't my choice but I did what I had to. I've did my time and I listen to whiners all the time on how broke they are, they can't do this or that. Well.... I'll ride to Sturgis each year I can afford to and my body will still allow me to go. I will find and have found places to stay(cabin) eat and have free beer even. I fully enjoy my going to Sturgis. Hi I live in Port Saint Lucie Fl when I I first moved to Hollywood in 1969 I was 19yrs old from Brooklyn NY. I had a 450 Honda that I brought down here with me. I through out the backseat of my Chevelle and took the fuck out of the bike so I was able to put the bike in the back of my car. Over the years I lived in Hollywood then to Ft Lauderdale and then Sunrise and again to Tamarac and again to Coral Springs then to Port Saint Lucie which is I still live. I’m now 71 yrs I have been riding. I now have a 2015 Harley Street Glide Special. Bike riding has been a major part of my life and I’m nowhere near done. I enjoy watching real people

I purchased an antique Soviet Union Dnepr military sidecar motorcycle for cheap to restore and ride. I'm in my 54th year of riding motorcycles and started with dead 1960's bikes I fixed myself. Now that I'm retired I wanted a bike that needs constant attention like a Trophy Wife. That Dnepr motorcycle is basically what it was copied from, a 1938 BMW R-71. If it had a check engine light it would just be connected to the ignition switch and be on all the time. It uses oil because it was designed to do that. That's just the way things worked back then. It has brass valve guides, brass valve seats, and cast iron rings so it needs to suck a little oil through the valve guides to lubricate to top end. It's not enough to smoke but you must keep a check on it and keep the oil toped off. I carry oil, tool's, and spare parts with me just in case. There's even a spare wheel mounted on the back of the sidecar just like the spare tire carried in car's and trucks. It's the first motorcycle I ever had to buy 4 tires for. I've come to love it! It's the most fun motorcycle I've ever owned. Would I do it again? In a heart beat! I've found an older Ural with a blown engine the owner is thinking about selling.

Two other thoughts, Electric start on motorcycles has kept old guys like me on motorcycles. I have terrible knees and ankles and would never be able to regularly kick start. 2nd, The internet has made it tremendously easy to make the claim that someone else (anyone else) isn't a real biker. If you wear a helmet or own a CVO, or wear gear with corporate brands on them....on and on and on. After over 55 years of riding, I'm a poser. Great video.

It's not the cameras, it's the internet. In the early 80's the ladies loved to have their picture taken. They didn't have to worry the whole world see it. Back then people actually rode to rallies, not just ride at the rally. If you did break down on the way, the next biker that came along would stop to see if they could help, not turn their head and act like they didn't see you, and it's way too much trouble to pull a motorhome or a vehicle loaded with bikes on a trailer over on the side of the road. It was a brotherhood back then that has been lost, that is the biggest change.

Spot on observation. I was 18 in 1976, and things were certainly different. We had to learn motorcycle maintenance, (Ironhead ), and develop a high alcohol resistance. My buddies are either dead or married now. I still ride.

I agree 100% One more thing I'd add is the music, it has changed and maybe it is just me but I haven't changed with it. Miss Skynyrd and the likes. "That smell" takes me back! My dad too took me to rallies but will never forget Sturgis 1990, the 50th! I was there too and probably around the same age as you at the time! You are absolutely correct in how the rallies have changed. First trip to Sturgis from Canada was in 1978, last trip was 2018. The local rides are the only thing that has not changed and some things are better! The parties have calmed down, the numbers have increased, (dramatically!) the bands are better and the opportunity for people watching is outstanding! Good insight Mr. Monkey! Really like your post. ‘75 sportster, did everything to keep it. Rally’s were a joy. Son born in ‘84, daughter in ‘89. Finally a rally in ‘03, fun was gone. Maybe me, maybe times. Didn’t feel the same, hanged with the old guys and reminisced. Good post.

Laughlin River Run used to be the best rally west of Sturgis. Maybe for a different reason than usual. It was cheap, high rise casinos, skin, and when done riding or watching the drag races at Avi, you could park in covered parking and drink your face off and never get in trouble. Watch the parade of skin all night. Then came the shoot out at Harrahs between two MCs. It's all history now. Cancelled last year, and when and if they start back up Las Vegas Metro PD in riot gear, on horseback. kind of ended the fun. The casinos got greedy and vendors got tired of shrinking crowds. Ahhh great memories, but it will never be what it was.

You are spot on. I have been body painting for festivals and rallies for over two decades. 2000s it was a very relaxed attitude, people were just having fun. People hung out, with somethings to everything hanging out. I did not have an isolated booth it was just a semi open tent with a couple of chairs. Then in 2008 one of my regulars asked me for a screen/booth after a dude popped into the tent and started snapping photos. There were 3 women in the tent and clothing above the waist was not present. Thankfully the dude ran into one of the ladies old man, when he attempting to leg it. The old man broke the camera, then the two of them went and had a chat. Post 2010 just wow. Prudish is the only way i can describe the shift. even the body paint side really shifted. people are almost always clothed until they get into the booth. I now carry pasties as part of the service. Now there are two parts of this story, one is the contract/business side were i can be cranking out 2 to 5 girls before noon, which noticeable shifted more around 2014/5 as these gigs became far less frequent. But the number we are talking about here is the walkin. Pre 2010 walk in i averaged 6 full or partial upper torsos a day. Post 2010 walk in i average 1.5 every other day of an event, now the numbers get goofy because normally it is groups of two or three women at a time. What has become the normal are flash pieces, i crank out 35 to 50 a day. If i am contracted for a job its normally around the 15 to 20 pieces of flash. In my opinion the biggest issues are the number of people (tourist have gotten really bad) and the number of picture snap happy idiots. They have ruined a lot of the uninhibited part of festival/rally culture.

I absolutely agree with people hating, I’ve had family members hate on me because I didn’t do like a lot of other people around here and be stagnant. I’ve worked my way up and I’ve earned what I have so don’t be mad because you don’t have anything because you done nothing, life is what you make it. The camera phone issue, it reminds me of scene in a film where a famous photographer sees what would be a beautiful cover photo and chooses not to take the photo because he just wants to stay in the moment. Taking a photo disconnects us from the moment, my home videos are horrendous because I prefer to view in real time. That’s why riding is so awesome because I feel more connected to everything and I don’t have a barrier or “lens” to separate me from my surroundings.

I've been to all the major rallies in the USA and I've been to Sturgis five times Over the years for the most part I've enjoyed all of these events My biggest complaint would be the greed...especially with accommodations Now I prefer the smaller venues Thunder in the Smokies is a wonderful small rally and it's financially manageable For me it's not so much the shirt and the bands more the food in the riding

Good vids, well thought out. I rode to Sturgis(#69) on a Sportster. Lot of guys at home thought it wasn't possible. That's nuts! I'm old enough to remember when a Triumph 650 and a Honda 750 were road bikes. One my way to Sturgis I passed a Chevy pickup in Wyoming pulling a trailer with an Ultra on it, and slowed down long enough to show the driver that he got passed by a Sportster with out of state plates. Bet he didn't share that with anybody. I'm retired now and ride an '07 Low Rider and it's not stock. Commercialism is ruling the day.

I think the greed and the attempt to make it family friendly was part of the downfall. There was a much tighter community back then. I Wholly Agree, as a Former Free Lance Photographer for Born to Ride and Other magazines I Think Biggest Change is it Went from Down to Earth Bikers that mostly worked on their own stuff and rode whenever possible or had a Bike as Only transportation and Rally's Today are Yuppies, Sport Bikes, and a Commercial Event where the only Rat Bikes are Expensive Custom Models Created in a Boutique Shop. And Riding a Harley , Indian or their Classic was a Rebellious Action and Not Todays Socially Acceptable PC Cultured Social Event

Remember the days when you had to wait to get back home to let people know how the trip was. I agree with everything you say. We have a place in Laconia for the summer so I've been doing that Rally for over twenty years and besides cops arresting topless girls and every newbie doing a ten minute rev job the biggest change that I can remember was the early 00's when anyone who was anyone had to have a custom chopper, a bedazzled tapout shirt, flat racing sneakers and a great chiropractor. I used to work with a MC member who use to tell me the stories from the 70's Club grass drags. The cops and emt's were too afraid to enter the compound so when someone ate shit badly, they would load him on a sheet of plywood and dump them over the fence where the Emt's would take it from there. My times have changed.

I agree 100% that the phone camera has killed fun times. No one wants to end up on KZbin having fun doing dumb shit, embarrassing shit, potentially borderline illegal shit, or revealing shit while letting loose and having some fun. What happens at the rallies, should stay at the rallies. If someone wants to experience the rallies, go to them, share your experiences only by telling your stories, but don’t share with videos or pictures!!! That’s what makes the old head stories so great. You’re not sure if you can believe them unless you go and experience it for yourself. Then verbally share your experiences. I’m not saying to ban phones from rallies, but you go to experience the rallies for yourself, not for other people. If they want to see what fun it was, maybe they should have went there with you.

You are right with the technology. I have been riding for 40++++ years. No riders are sitting under bridges anymore because of the weather apps. Here in South Florida out at Club Shell or J&S Fish Camp you can do a count down and everybody hops on their bikes at the same time.

You can buy any style of used Harley made in the last 25 years for $5000 all day long. Harley's goal should be as a used bike dealer that happens to sell some new bikes. Cyclefish helps you find smaller more laid back rallies.

It was 1994 "The Rub Invasion" we called it. That is when Harley's became cool and Harley started with the price increases. Rallies are different now for the old timers because we had a way different way of thinking and still do. We rode to the edge and jumped right over it. We were hard partying, vulger and down right tramps. Some of the stuff we did people would freak out about now . Sturgis, Daytona and all the majors now are corporate and over regulated. You want a real party, the way it used to be, go to a local weekend bash. Close as you're going to get to the way those rallies used to be . Good Vid

On point Brother! I've been riding on motorcycles for about 55 years. I've been operating motorcycles, driving them if you will, for 49 years! I rode Hondas until 93. Been on Harleys ever since. Technology allows asshats to say shit to people from behind a keyboard, shit 99% would dare not say to your face! Great commentary. Been riding to rallies and events since the early 90's. I used to be on the "trailer week" train whereby you shold be "riding" your bike to rallies, but my tune has changed... a bit. Everyone is allowed to enjoy a rally the way they want to. They are making their own fun. And sometimes, when yo are thousands of miles from nowhere, getting there on a bike, depending on your health, time etc, may not be doable. What drives me nuts is the dude (or "dudette") who pulls up in an RV with bikes AND a golfcart, rolls the bike off the trailer, and drives around in the golfcart all week or weekend, never even getting on the bike. I noticed way too much of that at the big rallies, but at my first SmokeOut, EVERYONE was riding. As the event grew, and had to be held at a dragstrip, it too, became "trailer week" with all kinds of golf carts. It got so bad in the event area (the event and camping area wear split by a fence), that they banned golfcarts from the event side as the traffic of carts and people jammed the whole area up. I think the golf cart/trailer queen saga gets worse the bigger the event gets. Little Sturgis was the same the first time I went in 2019. A sea full of trailers when I rode around the campground! I know someday I'll have to trailer to the distant events, but for now, I try to ride my bike wherever and whatever event I go to. It's part of the adventure! Going to try and stick to the smaller, regional events where most everyone is still riding. I'll still be welcoming to anyone I meet at an event who wants to talk, but I do what I do and yo do what yo do! Ride safe everyone!

@@ProfessionalMonkey Forgot to add: The worst thing about most rally campgrounds, and it's not the people driving the RV's that have control, but there REALLY should be a separation of riders who camp and the RV's. There's nothing worse than riding a few hundred miles each day to get to a destination, only to be surrounded by a bunch of randomly scattered RV's with the generators running all night so they sleep in air conditioning, while riders have to try to sleep and drone those generators out. Again, not blaming the guys in the RV's as most are unaware of this "bitch". It would be nice if the campground owners had separate areas for each. Bikes and people generally quiet down in the wee hours, while generators don't. BTW, watched your video on what not to do in a biker bar or "how to get your ass kicked!". Great advice. I don't belong to a formal club (rather an informal group of long time riders and partiers who grew up together in the same county, probably between 75 and 100 people), where none of us wear patches, "cuts" or anything and just be ourselves. I never really thought about the "Lone Wolf" or "Independent" patches being offensive, but it does LOOK like you are trying to belong to a club without belonging to a club. It's paradoxical!

My name is Jerry and I am 69 years of age. Never been to Sturgis as money did not allow. I am from South Carolina where the oldest motorcycle rally is located. Myrtle Beach Bike Rally. I started riding in the early 80's when shovel heads were the thing One of the big differences in then and now, you better know how to work on your bike. Back in out day, we rode hard and did not have the bikes as of today with all the room and POWER. I own a brand new Tri Glide with less then 500 miles on it. Totally different style of riding. Myrtle Beach back in the 80's and 90's was the place to be. Yes we all went to Daytona but even it was no where near the fun Myrtle Beach was. It was a huge rally from Murrels Inlet to Little River. The whole Myrtle Beach Grand Strand. Vendors were everywhere and the crowd was huge. Hells Angles would rent out the whole Holliday Inn and fly their chapter flags from the hotel balconys. Then came black people. They always had their rally two weeks after Myrtle Beach Rally. The two did not mix. Then the blacks started showing their ass trying to destroy the beach they knew white people loved. Myrtle beach is a family beach when bikes are not in town. Places would have their women on. the backs of bikes as naked as the law would allow in front of children and other vacationers that did not know this show would be there. They. would go into restaurants, run up a huge bill and walk out never paying for the meal. The following years, the restaurant owners would close up during black week in fear of losing money. Here come the NAACCPP. So the Myrtle beach city council stopped allowing vendors to work in the city limits. They even tried to close down the roads but the SCDOT stopped that. So after all the black bull shit and destruction of our beautiful Myrtle beach, white people now have their rally in Murrells Inlet south of Myrtle Beach city limits and N week two weeks later is in North Myrtle beach. Our rally will never be the same again thanks to so called people acting like animals All they care about is breaking the law and destroying our beach.

The times change no doubt. I'm a retired truck driver now after 40 years in it and women used to flash their glorious bosoms at us and it was much appreciated that ended when the camera phone arrived everybody was afraid of being posted online. Yep that little device is just like Pandora's box it can cause a lot of drama.

I was growing up in the late 60s and through the 70s. Men on Harleys and women with tattoos were on the edge, blue color and 1%ers. They weren't the kind of people your mom wanted you hanging out with. While they may have been on the edge of society, they were mostly good people and accepted outsiders, it didn't matter if I was that teen ager on a Suzuki. They didn't have any problem with others, at a rally, drink, smoke, BS and ride around was the number one goal. It seems as the H-D buying craze started in the 1980s, having a Harley was a status symbol. Being a biker seemed like a way for these folks to have a life outside of their office. They weren't a problem except for H-D dealerships starting to raise prices and expand by adding boutiques and accessory lines that were out of the price range of most riders except for the new yuppies. Most were older but like I said, not bad guys, not trouble makers and no swelling ego. The younger group that came after the yuppies are the guys with the attitudes, "if you aren't on a Harley, you are a POS." At rallies, poker runs, and organized rides, they are the guys who always seem to want to start a fight to show that they are bikers. They are the guys that do stupid shit like them and a few buddies riding 8 abreast effectively blocking Interstate 10 near Orlando riding 40mph. If you are from the Orlando area, traffic on 10 normally runs about 90. I have been to Sturgis, Daytona, and a few others, probably never will again. There are just too many idiots on motorcycles now. It seems like 90% of them are out to prove something either with a bare knuckles brawl or street racing. None of which interests me. Bars that have stepped up their drink menus to include $15 mojitos, $5 beers, are ridiculous. For the money I would spend there in a few hours, I can buy a bottle of Johnny Walker or a couple of cases of beer and sit at home and watch biker related content on you tube with no danger of some drunk biker running into me while I sit at a light or getting mixed up in a bar fight. For me, it is the caliber of people who have changed. Bikers seem to be as fragmented as the rest of society and protective of their borders.

The biggest change I've seen in the motorcycle culture is definitely reliability. And the second biggest is the general obesity of the modern bike rider and rally goer. 1989 was my first rally and the pics from that summer show skinny, fit people fixing bikes on the side of the road.

In Australia we don't have rallies like over there and if we did the cops would probably shut them down. But I agree the Harley's today are easier to ride. For over 30 yes I had nothing new than an evo. Couple of years ago I bought my first twin cam because I am too old for my old bikes. The road king is great I will ride that thing regularly for 8 to 10 hours straight and feel no pain ( except the neck. I hate helmet laws) and apart from oil changes, and rebuilding the starter and rear master cylinder I have clean hands. Keep up the great vids

When I was a kid we had a rally north of us and Harleys came through all weekend. As a kid and not knowing I figured these folks were just the average joe worker. But like you stated these bikes can be expensive. This was late 80's-early 90's. Lots of the guys coming in had good jobs like Dr and Lawyer and such. Secondly the camera phone has ruined life. Glad my big parting days were pre phone and internet.

Working for what you have is the most respectable way to go! I hate when someone works hard for what they have and people get jealous and hateful toward them because they were too lazy physically or mentally to make themselves successful! That being said... I have seen people work hard to build a company, become successful but then leave their employees behind financially. First hand experience. Can't afford to pay more because of all the new toys they keep buying for themselves.

In 1990 I was 40 years old and had a 2 year old son and an old iron head Sporty so there was no going to Sturgis for me. A few years ago, with a newer bike, I decided it was time. A check online showed me that even motels 30 miles from Sturgis wanted sack loads of money for crappy rooms, nice places wanted a years salary for a night (yes, I exaggerate). So I decided no Sturgis. Camping is not an option due to health concerns and I do not have or want an RV. I go to other, local rallies and probably have as much fun as I would at Sturgis and I watch online at what others post. Too bad I didn't have a biker dad.

I STONGLY AGREE with the camera phone point. People who are taking pictures and videos think that they are somehow preserving the moment but in doing so they are MISSING the moment. There is no substitute for the actual experience. Why even go if all your going to do is watch a damn video of it later, shit, just go on KZbin and watch it later if that's what you want!!!

You nailed it. Also, our preferences, as individuals, change over time. Sometimes we just 'grow up' and don't do some of the things we use to, nor want to put up with the inconveniences and/or travelling long distances on a bike when the car is so much more comfortable (especially when the Mrs no longer wants to ride that far). Also, the folk (those characters, the group of friends) we use to ride with and socialise with are no longer around so the atmosphere, the 'self entertainment' we once experienced is no longer there. It's not the rally, per se, it's the company we have and/how we travelled to the rally has changed. Once, the 'journey' was just as or more important than the 'destination', perhaps things have changed where the destination (ie. just getting there) is more important than the journey. For me, 'the riding' remains the most important bit, the rally is for socialising and catching up with those same folk that you see and only meet up with at rallies.

In the 80's I got my license and a Summer Job. I worked in Wiers Beach Laconia. First as a head lifeguard at the Surf Coaster water park, and then stocking the Beer cooler at the Jackson Star Market. Riding down Paugus Bay during Bike Week back then was surreal for a teen. I didn't get to participate much in those days as I was working my tail off summers to pay for school. But I never forgot the fun that was Bike Week and once I graduated, I made annual pilgrimages back to the Lakes Region. I still go out and ride the twisty back roads I knew from my youth. I still climb Agiocochook (Mt. Washington) and really miss the "bikes only" day. But most of all, I enjoy parking on Lake Ave and just watching people. The 100th Laconia Bike Week is this June. Going to be a mob scene. Already have my reservation for lodging. May the weather gods shine favorable on us.

Some great points here, Monkey. I made it to my first Sturgis rally this year (2023) I rode down on my carb'd EVO and tent camped at the Chip in the mud. I got home and realized I only took 1 picture and that was of mine and my buddy's bikes buried in the mud, lmao. Absolutely no shame in having new bikes and RVs and trailering. My buddies that I rode with were on a newish Road Glide and a new Challenger. It's all good, you do you. I enjoy the experience of being different and that things might go wrong. I've rebuilt 2 Evo engines in my garage and enjoy wrenching and trying different crap to make it mine. I could pay cash for a new CVO, and someday I might. But I like the older stuff that you don't see much of anymore.

The people that started the Harley craze in the late 80's early 90's with their pockets full of cash had become known at "The RUB" rich urban bikers. They drove the cost of everything Harley and rallies up and of course, Harley and others capitalized on it.

Been riding to Daytona bike week since 96. The biggest change for me, is the amount of people! Used to only be 50-100 thousand people. Now it 500 thousand people trying to fit in the same 2 blocks.
