I am enjoying your channel. I live in NH so much farther north. We have starting to have temps in high 70s and low 80s during the day but getting into high 50s at night. So I overseeded a week and half ago and put peat moss over it. Still haven't seen growth though so wondering if something is up with my soil. Some of the blend was perennial rye so I should have seen some growth by now. I am keeping it wet too. Any suggestions is helpful.

Hey Chris! I would recommend doing a soil test and see where the pH levels are at. It might be that the soil is not where it needs to be for the seed to take and germinate.

I like to use a spike aerator vrs the plug ...I get it so it just puts about half inch slit in soil like using it without weight .. I go in all directions putting small nicks in soil .. Seed falls into the roughed up soil... Yes I always seed in fall like last week of August here in pa ... I use heavy pre emergent in spring and weed killer ... Secret is to kill weeds in spring not grow new grass... I put out mushroom mulch just before first snow also and lightly throw it around on bare spots .... Add lime also at that time if needed using agriculture lime with drop spreader not Dolmintic pellet lime as it has magnesium ..... Secret is kill weed seeds in soring,weeds in summer ,THEN plant your new seed.....

My yard has been predominately Tall Fescue until recently Red fescue is creeping in.. will red fescue eventually take over my lawn? Should I take care of it with a non selective herbicide then drop some tall fescue seed? Thank you for all the awesome videos and information!
@domyown
@domyown 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the creeping Fescue would continue to creep into the areas that are declining by tall Fescue. You would need to use something like Round Up if you do not want it in those areas. Just know that there will be a period of time that you cannot plant anything after spraying the non-selective. Of course it will depend on the specific product you choose.

Is there any problem overseeding what I think is Bermuda grass with a RTF tall fescue? I really don't like Bermuda and I'm hoping that I can do that by simply overseeding. I live in Las Vegas Nevada which is a transition zone but a rather warm one usually. This year it has been a rather cool June. Thank you for your videos I love them. And I am a subscriber. Thank you for giving me the education I need.
@domyown
@domyown Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching! We appreciate you. Due to the aggressive nature of Bermuda, with it's stubborn stolons and rhizomes spreading and choking other types of grasses, simply overseeding with Fescue will likely not achieve your end goal. One option you may consider is to totally kill your Bermuda in the summer when it is actively growing with a non-selective glyphosate-based herbicide and then seed with a Fescue in the Fall while the soil temperature is still warm but the air is cool.

You mentioned lime in your video. If my ph is low. Can I put my lime down before over seeding? Or just wait a week after?
@domyown
@domyown 7 жыл бұрын
Great question Doug. Fall is the best time for lime applications. Just keep in mind that lime will not have instant results. It will take some time to really start showing results. Lime and over seeding can be done at the same time, I would just do lime first and wait a week or so, as to allow for it to get into the soil first. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Jim, I did a total lawn renovation of my .60 acre lot in Maryland two years ago with great results thus far. I have aerated and overseeded a total of four times in the last two years. Our temps are a little cooler than in Charlotte. I would wait till the end of September/early October. I actually had my best results both times when I aerated/seeded in early October . The cooler fall temperatures combing with a higher moisture content/ morning dew really help the whole process.

S Sweeney Where in Maryland are you at? Takoma Park public works has leaf mulch for only $20 to load up any size truck, and they also deliver. I think it is much better and cheaper than using straw. Also once the leaf mulch decomposes into your lawn, it will rise the nitrogen level on the yard by a good amount.

Would the aerating machine plug holes on compacted soil and surface tree roots?
@domyown
@domyown 4 жыл бұрын
A core aerator pulls plugs from the soil to make space for water, air, and nutrients to move more freely through the soil. Aeration will not make plugs in tree roots, but we recommend that you use caution when using machines around tree roots so that you do not damage the equipment or the trees.

Great - I'll stay tune for the next video. I appreciate you getting started on the fall work now as a reminder for myself. Last year I did the same thing, but later in the season than I wanted. As a result I received good results, but not great. I have a problem with Poa Annua (In the Seattle area) so I started with Tenacity treatments once a week as a pre emergent and post emergent and starting to see the treatments take effect. (There's a study that shows summer applications are more effective with frequent low doses while cold weather applications achieve better results with 14 day intervals applications). I expect to over seed in a few weeks - early September. Thanks for the reply and your videos - nice job! and good luck with the weeds.

My new lawn is full of crab grass. I did a post emergent 4 days ago, most are dying off now. Would it be best for me to wait until spring to overseed, a couple weeks after I put down the pre-emergent? Or should I overseed this fall yet? Cool season grass in Wisconsin. Do I need to both dethatch and aerate if the lawn was just installed this last spring?

@davewaveandrews
@davewaveandrews 7 жыл бұрын
Check out the label, remember label is law. The post-emergent might tell you how long until you can put down new seed. For example, the glysophate I use to kill weeds says 7 days. In Wisconsin you can probably put down seed anytime in September. I would at least de-thatch to remove the thatch layer so you get good seed to dirt contact.

I realize in the front yard you put down a pre-and post-emergent. Could you have still aerated that area or would it have broken the pre-emergent barrier ? And if you are able to aerate those areas will the aeration holes still fill in with no seeds added?
@davewaveandrews
@davewaveandrews 7 жыл бұрын
I aerate before I put my pre-emergent crabgrass preventer down this year and had good results with very little crabgrass and the wholes fill in and plugs break down in about 1 month time frame.
@theCastleberry
@theCastleberry 7 жыл бұрын
If I did aerate the front, it would have broken down the pre-emergent barrier for sure. Best to aerate before, and then either put down a pre and post emergent app or overseed. NOT BOTH! If you try to overseed and put down a pre emergent, it will inhibit the seeds from germinating. Hope that helps.

@domyown 2 жыл бұрын
For overseeding Fescue lawns, it can be effective to apply a compost top dressing at the same time, because the seeds need direct soil contact to germinate. You could start by aerating and seeding first, and then apply a 1/4" of rich layer of compost to encourage the seeds to grow.

KBG doesn't grow well in our environment. It is too warm and has high humidity which causes many diseases problems in the south. It's good for states that are a little further north not in Georgia. Fescue grows a deep root system and that is why we can get it to grow this far south.
