Why overseed with rye? From my understanding Perennial Ryegrass will release a toxin when its stressed and can start to kill off the other grass type in your lawn. I think the Lawn care nut may have talked about it on a podcast. Ill look for it.
@ryanknorrlawncare

@@travistegland3688 Why? Because it's my favorite grass type and blends with bluegrass just fine. Better color and texture if you use the correct varieties.

Looking at those brown areas near the street reminds me of a couple of areas I had near my sidewalk where the soil was shallow and had some buried rocks and concrete. I think it absorbed and retained the heat. Eventually I dug the areas up and replaced it with deep spoil and had no more issues.
@BenjaminT.Minkler
@BenjaminT.Minkler 2 жыл бұрын
only problem is that those areas between the sidewalk and the curb *are not your property* ....I have the exact same thing going on next to a storm drain, so dug it up to find a large over pour of concrete(too big to pull out without breaking it up) before I went any further I called around to different city offices, and had my yard marked for buried lines - one of my calls must of gotten someone's attention as a guy showed up pretty quick - they were very nice about it, but told me I wasn't even allowed to dig there at all and were not happy that I had killed the grass and removed any of the soil(to lower the level like Ryan is wanting to do) anyway, they are very clear that you do not have control over those areas, and that property lines usually start somewhere at the sidewalk or inboard toward the house, not at the curb
@Keiseru
@Keiseru 2 жыл бұрын
I can confirm that from my own experience that the "mystery area" is probably rocky and gravelly soil that does not retain moisture and crowds the roots. Usually found next to concrete/asphalt or stone paving.

On the weed pressure this year - what I learned was that heavy, heavy rain followed by high humid heat really makes the weeds pop. At least here in the Chicago suburbs we had early summer rains as opposed to cool spring rains and that may be why we are seeing so many more weeds this year. Also, excited to see what happens when you plant fescue and cut low. Some have suggested fescue doesn't do well cut low, but glad someone is willing to give it a try. Thanks for keeping the content coming.

I'm very happy with my TTTF which is about 10 months old now. Temps here in IL have reached about 95-100. The young TTTF lawn is still doing great with some light browning. What I noticed last time is that when it rained for 3 days, the TTTF lawn turned green quite easily. The brown blades vanished. I'm renovating my backyard lawn next month, about 4k sqft. Thanks for the update.

I have had small dead spots with root damage similar to the spots you showed in the side yard. I believe mine are due to a little overapplication of pre-emergent herbicide (Barricade) in small spots in the spring.

I apologize in advance for always getting to your channel and asking a bunch of questions. If you're annoyed or busy or anything else, no response is okay! I've watched several of your videos about grass type. And I love the tall fescue you use, I'm thinking of changing my lawn over to that. As I'm sure my lawn is fescue, bluegrass, a mix of a bunch of everything else, including clover. LOTS of clover. Being the end of July, it's difficult for me to bite the bullet and start over right now. I'm hoping to start over next spring with leveling my lawn using your video on that, killing weeds and clover, and planting fescue. In your videos, I haven't seen to what height you cut to. I know you use a reel mower, which I do not have, nor plan on buying. So I try to do what I can with what I have. I've been cutting to 3 inches. And just within the last month. Typically I'm cutting at 3.5 inches. Today I went down to 2.75 inches. But your lawn looks cut very low, but looks amazing. Like a golf course. How high do you recommend? Also, I have a 2021 Ariens Ikon XD, and Ariens doesn't have a striping kit available yet. Is there an aftermarket one you would recommend? Should I wait for the Ariens? Thank you in advance! EDIT: I was going to take photos of my lawn to post here, but I am sure I would just embarass myself! EDIT 2: I should mention, I am a bit north of you, in central Wisconsin. Here most people don't do much lawn work other than mowing.

Ryan - that brown spot issue you describe at 6:00, I have/had the exact same issue this year. I have the same KBG variety as you planted in a mixed KBG/PRG yard (from Seed Super Store). I had all these small spots that looked a little brown. When plucked, they'd pull out easily and still have some green shoots in the. It's like they were severed from the roots. Think it might be fungus, I first applied a systemic fungicide and then a contact fungicide (ewww pricey). Later I applied an insecticide. While the problem didn't get worse, it also didn't get better. For now, I have arrested the issue. But then I remembered that I had applied T-NEX just before all this started. And I accidentally applied a slightly higher dose than intended. I believe it *might* be the case that one of my bluegrass varieties is susceptible to damage from T-NEX. I have no proof, but that is what I know now. I do know this spotting issue doesn't affect rye, as small parts of my yard had the KBG wiped out and only rye remains.

Ryan, which of your products would help this situation? My soil test shows elevated levels of phosphorus at my new construction home. I have a turf type tall fescue lawn. After applying slow release fertilizer with zero phosphorus and applying iron it greens up but doesn’t last long. It quickly turns yellow green and doesn’t grow very well after about 3 weeks. My theory is that the elevated phosphorus is impacting the grass from absorbing nutrients. Any suggestions how to correct this or do I keep applying fertilizer and iron hoping the levels drop in a few years?

Yes, they have been terrible around here this year! We have two terriers in our yard and they don't seem to care at all. I'm going to have put up a second fence inside the garden with smaller openings than what I have. It's frustrating.

@@kelseyknorr3535 I used some chicken wire that I had left over from the compost pile project I did a couple years ago and that seemed to work but they are still eating my asiatic lillies and almost didn't let my sunflowers take off.

Do a video showing what treating those weeds on a stressed lawn. We hear this a lot “don’t want to stress it any more than it’s already experiencing”. What happens when you do treat those weeds now? Thanks

Does a blvd generate more heat that can kill the lawn? My blvd lawn has brown patches every summer.

Sorry comment spam. I do have TTTF in part of my lawn and it has tolerated reel mowing at .6 inches consistently all year so I think you can do it! Im in murfreesboro TN

Could be billbug. They don’t touch ryegrass. Spray a small area with some bifen and check back in an hour or two.

Hey Ryan once my yard is leveled when would you put the seed down? I'm in Ohio not far from columbus. Ohio is crazy because the weather is alway so unpredictable. Is the first of September ususally when you put your seed out? I have the Rye so germination will happen quick. My front yard is pretty big so watering is going to be an issue if I don't do half and get it going then seed the other half. If I do one half the first of September I feel like I could seed the other half the second week of Sptemeber and still establish a good root base. Does that sound reasonable?

Can you recommend any strategies for killing cool season grass overgrown with clover and weeds that doesn't involve Roundup type products? With cancer in the family we are avoiding such chemical treatments. I'm trying to develop a plan for the Fall. Thanks.

My Mazama KBG did the same thing this year. No grubs, I treated for fungus, and to no avail........ I am pretty convinced it is billbugs....

Burn that front strip of Bluegrass up, baby! I’m sure you’ll only be happy if you get your PRG in there. Much appreciate the look at the TTTF in the back yard. I’ve just nuked my 4,300 sqft mess off a backyard and will be seeding with a very nice TTTF blend come September. I really debated going with KBG, but in 6b Virginia it might have been tough or just require too much water. Your experience helps cement TTTF was the right call. Cheers!
