For me, it's clear that heritage breeds are superior for the homestead. You can harness their foraging ability to help you improve your soil, and they usually taste better, too. This is true for cattle, poultry and pigs, anyway.
@christopheleblanc91757 жыл бұрын
this might sound stupid,,,, but you have deep bedding on top of old crop remains that has been compacted by chicken waste, would putting a few holes through to the depth of the old garden remains , aid in the sent of the buried waste get the pigs attention , pinch bar or post digger and 30 min should be enough to see if it would work, chicken ammonia is strong when it built up like that ,maybe too hard on the pigs nose

Before moving them try to remove their feeder and feed them on the ground and only the minimum require ! they wont want to loose any so they will dig to get it all and find something else ! they where living on a concrete floor they don't know how to feed themselves from the ground but they learn fast how to feed from the feeder so remove the feeder and feed them on the ground survival instinct will kick in and they will learn !!! great video !

I raise Katahdin Hair Sheep, but I also add other heritage stock to give them vigor. I don't believe that hybrids in any category is a magic remade for issues like crop failure. I believe with close husbandry that bio diversity is what farmers and ranchers should be doing. If you look back in time ALL the crop failures like the Potato failures in Ireland, or the Dust Bowl in the US all happend when we diverted to a monolithic system.

Maybe you could try limiting the feed for the pigs again and bury their feed, starting with part of it being above ground and digging a little deeper every day, so they learn to dig for their food and after a few days I expect they will dig for the fermented stuff as well

I see you used rubber hinges on the feeder, just as effective as metal hinges plus they don't rust/need oiled and you probably made them from something you already had lying around. Saved needing to waste money driving to town to pay for metal hinges.

Great experiment! Thanks for bringing us along. I did notice a lovely place where they're adding their waste, so that's a plus, speeding up compost for this spring. You're right, even the hatchery raised fish released around here are pretty stupid. Maybe a treat ball will get them up & moving? Seems like their minds need introduction to possibility.

We ran pigs and chickens. You need to mix corn in with the bedding. That way, the pigs will dig through it to get the corm. You need to leave something in there they want. You can also encourage them by spilling their feed right onto the bedding.

I know that they do like to dig. Here in Florida we have a grass called nutgrass which has nodules on the roots that pigs apparently LOVE. They will dig the dirt as deep as 6 feet to get at them. If you are in the country and want to have a garden without weeds just pen some pigs in the area for a few months and you couldn't get better plowed, weed free ground. It does sound like they haven't figured out there's food there yet so a little tutoring from some pigs that do dig should make a big difference.

I bought two females mule foot piglet and one genius male piglet and did not have a pig pen finished yet. But a had a 1/4 acre chicken yard and an 8 foot square chicken house so I put the little pigs in the for what I thought would only be a few days. Well when I finished the pig pen my piglets keep braking out at bedtime and going in the chicken house to sleep. The chicken did not seem to mind so I gave up and now they are still living happily together and the pigs are now 6 months old

I wonder if you can train them. For wild pigs they say you can dig holes with a post hole digger, fill it with corn, and bury the top, as a way to lure them out. Something similar might work in the deep bedding to train them to dig.
@gaiustesla93247 жыл бұрын
Yes I think that the pigs are intelligent enough to respond to basic training to search for food, as mentioned in the video perhaps putting them with the heritage breeds could maybe help them learn. Its might perhaps to be difficult to find a breed that will fit straight into your system as you dont want larger pigs threatening the chickens.
@hughbrackett3437 жыл бұрын
Just loosening up the deep bedding in a few places might get them going through it then looking for more. They were curious about the loose material when Simeon first put them in. If that doesn't work maybe they need Pig Lessons from the heritage pigs.

I've seen potbellies make decisions that are out of reach of a 2 or 3-year-old human child. I don't think that so-called "livestock pigs" are any less trainable. They're always food-incentivized, and once they see a connection between an action and an reward, they do whatever it takes. Unlike cats or dogs, pigs understand the relation between "cause and effect,:

HI, I enjoy your chanel very much and check it daily for your reports. Please keep it up you are doing a great job. I have learned many thimgs I didn't know! I discovered I'm no wheres near as smart as I thought I was on many occasions "LOL" BUT I don't mind as I love to learn more and new things. As for the pigs i tend to agree with the others you need to try some of their advice and try training them. Pigs are very smart and if you teach them to dig and root for food they will. They have been raised to have their food handed to them and expect it to happen!. As for the pigs the pigs killing chickens I didn't expect it to happen. Just like dogs give them time to adjust to each others like pack members and you have no problems. Just the same when you put a new animal in a pen with others you have to watch out for over agression on occasion by the pack. Sometimes a new animal can get badly injured or even killed as you know! I was raised om a farm but only have a few acres now but still raise sheep, goats, and chickens for enjoyment and a little extra money, very little extra that is!
@raymondhodge39797 жыл бұрын
I love watching your pigs even if they are very lazy. What would happen if you put your other heritage pigs in there for awhile and the new pigs in the other pig stable. It would be a little variety for everyone. Have the children named the pigs yet.

That's interesting that the behavior is different between the breeds. But they're still kind of cute😉
@kurgan3227 жыл бұрын
You take that free choice feed away from those pigs and I promise you they will root. The less feed you give them, the more they will dig. You can also intensify their rooting by shrinking their space. If you want them to grow faster, give them free choice feed. You speak of these "hybrid" pigs as if they are an alien race. One of your pigs is a Yorkshire/Hampshire cross, both very old breeds. In your other video you talk about crossing with Duroc. The Yorkshire/Hampshire/Duroc cross is a very old one. My Great-Grandfather was raising York/Hamp/Duroc crosses from the early 1930's until the 1980's. I don't know how you can get more 1950's genetics than that.
@jasonmacdonald54687 жыл бұрын
you are very correct pigs are very intelligent, and a free lunch is a free lunch any pig will eat for free, as apposed to working for it ln that environment, with the chickens they only root for amusement however they are engineered to get fat, sleep and grow bacon
@kurgan3227 жыл бұрын
I have multiple paddocks on my farm right now where I rotated 8 York/Hamp/Duroc pigs throughout this year, and can tell you first hand they will and do root well. I have video evidence to prove my claims.
@kurgan3227 жыл бұрын
If you watch his previous video where he places them in the metal pen, he says they are digging well. In my lifetime experience of raising hogs, I have yet to see the breeds mentioned not root. I have a York/Hamp cross sow that jumped off a commercial truck. I promise you everything I have in the bank she roots, and has done so since the day I rescued her off the side of the interstate.

I do agree that it might be the breeding. All breeding is to achieve a goal. If it is to find a breed that works well in close quarters, on prepared feed and under electric lights, they may not do well in the outside world......kind of like humans. Have you tried running the heritage hogs in with the chickens yet? How about running the young ones with the heritage breeds so that they can learn by example. Hogs are very smart and will take advantage of their environment if they can. It is not necessarily probable, but it may be possible that the hogs have a problem with the chicken manure. We used to field raise hogs when I was a kid. We had a sawmill and a farm with over 100 hogs and 2,000 chickens so I've seen a lot of what you're up to. Keep up the good work. You'll succeed when you apply that strong German tendency toward research and getting the most out of a situation. I got the best of both worlds growing up with a German mom and a Swedish dad!

Thought the same thing - they are quick learners and if it´s about finding feed while digging, I bet they would copy in no time ;o)
@caponsacchi7 жыл бұрын
Pigs are fast learners when it comes to following the example of a model--a human teacher or another pig. That's how a Chinese farmer got his pigs to take high dives into a deep pool of water. (It may still be on KZbin.) They couldn't wait to swim to shore and get in line for another fly and dive. There's also a video that shows pigs taking turns jumping into a small stream at the top of a hill and sliding down to the bottom. Again, they can't wait to run back up and repeat the experience.

Pigs are the only animals I've seen who can actually "think." They will never love you "unconditionally" like a dog, but they are excellent "learners," especially if food-motivation is used.. Possibly, genetics has something to do with the lethargy of these pigs. But I'll bet that if they were made to work for their supper (or "treat"), and if enough time was spent on helping them see the connection between digging and food, they'd equal the Heritage pigs as ace sod-busters. (Of course, if the top layer is full of roots and other soil nutrients, they might remain content with digging.)
