About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

Beautifully executed video about what is wrong in America... Nice video... The end of your reminds me of the first Kenworth I bought because my dad bragged how they was all made in America and they still is he would say to me sometimes he pointed to the Walnut dash in his truck. The truck I found was almost identical to his and man it was cheap... Well it was all big kinda shiny the price was dirt cheap and yet the motor was a power house boy did it have some real throttle to it the salesman said so asked if I was ready to sign the note on it yet. It was only after signing the title in my name I got it home went to back in beside my dads dirty old truck all big and proud I straddle clean blocked the drive way only to find out it had no reverse.... Back in those days they wanted almost 7K to fix that Allison gear box. After the neighbors 3 horses hitched up pulled it along side the barn in our working spot the old man really laughed at me called me a few derogatory names for being such a dunce he asked me again how cheap the price of the truck was that couldn't back up and make no money he said to me. Then he said tools over there in the barn it ain't sitting here forever kid we got other stuff that needs to be worked on he said to me... And the 3 months it did sit there was like forever to me and so was the endless list of parts of gaskets and money but compared today it still was expensive although there were not that many parts to that old Detroit made Allison gear box It had... The day I got it running I was cleaning out the sleeper on that old 79 Areodyne... She sits in her spot today all shiny once more thanks to me and PPG paints.. Well a mouse ran out of the truck down my girlfriends arm and she screamed like a woman my dad heard it. I had no idea there was food in the storage cabinets in the sleeper... My old man told me about multi tasking is what ya money

We believe that the destiny of America is not as a low rent service sector economy, hobbled with foreign debt, and unable to manufacture its own goods. For too long we've conflated a cheap price with a good value, which over time has led to broader negative consequences for our industries, communities, and American workers. That's why we're committed to making ALL of our products with an unwavering dedication to quality, value, and service right here in the United States. As a US Veteran and American family owned business, we're proud to partner with a great company like Swisher Inc. who shares our values, to produce our LogOX forestry tools in the Heartland and play our small part in America's manufacturing comeback. We really appreciate Doug and Stacy bringing attention to this important issue for our country, and would like to encourage everyone to buy American made products whenever possible.

I'm retired, and I'll admit that it took me a loong time to learn what you just laid out so plainly. Some years ago, my Milwaukee Hole Hog was stolen. Already had it about 20 years; worked as good as when it was new. Looked on EBay....used 1601 drills about $330...then I saw NEW 1601 Milwaukee for just over @200 ??? Guess who moved production from Wisconsin to China? I found a couple friends that got new drills for $200....heating, loose trigger, etc I bought used for about $350

Hi Doug it's Billy with F&M Homesteading here in SE Kansas. We have been heating our homestead house for 3 years with a woodstove. We are fortunate enough to have an Omish sawmill located about 18 miles away. We get bundles of Flat Wood from the mill. The bundles are the size of a big bale of hay. They are 4ft long various diameters. After cutting them to the length we need we get around a rick of wood. The cost for a bundle of this wood is $5. Yep I'll say it again $5 we bought 6 bundles last August and heated our homestead house all winter from October until late March for under $30. So far no log splitter is needed, I'm 58 and enjoy time hand splitting the pcs that need to be split. I agree buy local, buy American Made. Love your channel.

I think getting a log splitter is a good idea but I am not throwing away my double bitter splitter. I actually made my own splitter bought local hydraulics and with the help of friends I designed and built my own, so I had to learn a few things about splitter like the hydraulic pressure and flow desired, storage capacity so oil doesn't heat and foam, filtration and where to filter, size of hoses for my design flow, design and layout of wedge and ram, length of cylinder stroke, driver coupling and 2 stage pump. buying local is good because you can get parts and help when needed.

Same problem in Canada. Chinese products have flooded the country squeezing out the Canadian made brands. Walmart has been opening up in every small town taking out any mom and pops shops. I feel the squeeze of choosing cheaper, most people do and its not getting better but we need to keep 'home' made in business. Maybe if we all can try to buy less 'stuff' so we can spend a little more when we do buy to ensure its Cannadian/American made.

I have a Swisher Splitter. One of the great points about it is being able to disengage the hydraulic pump when starting especially when cold. There is no pulling cold oil through the pump. It is easier cranking and after your engine has run a short time push the lever and engage the hydraulic pump. This feature and being made in the U.S.A. are two of the reasons I went with Swisher. Thanks for the videos.

We were one of only a couple companies in the US that produced them. They took the designs and moved them to one of their other mills and even though that mill was still making roughly a Million bucks a month after taxes, They had scammed the state of Ky out of several million dollars to invest in the mill to modernize it. They closed the doors and sold everything off because they already had what they wanted the high dollar products!

The big fight in Nebraska has been that Keystone XL pipeline that the Canadian company wants to install through the state. One of the first things the fight was over was the quality of the steel they were going to use. They were using steel from China. Which is inferior to the steel made in the USA. The company refused. They want to save money. But the natural aquifer that runs through Nebraska is at risk if there's a leak. It would have been built already if they agreed to use better quality steel!

Box stores haven't focused on american made products since Sam Walton passed away in the early 90's. Not sure why anything would think otherwise. Most of the splitters are assembled here in the states, but they use Chinese materials, and we're to the point that there really aren't many alternatives available. In most industries, it's legitimately difficult to find American materials and components. We've been so focused on saving money that our manufacturing sector is all but dead. Go try to buy an American made combination wrench and let me know what you find. Even if the components are made in the USA, the raw material is likely imported. Its been this way so long now that the Chinese have now figured out how to make products that are often as good as the American counterparts. That's partially because the Chinese have gotten better, and partially because the American businesses have cut so many corners that their quality has gone down substantially. Made In America is great when it means that your're product is a better value than the alternative, but otherwise it's a waste. Better value doesn't mean costs less. It means that you get more for the money you spend. Better quality, better dependability, faster, stronger, easier to use, easier to maintain, and so on. The cost difference has to be worth what you're getting in return. Otherwise you're often rewarding the American company for making bad choices. Utility tractors are a great example. There's not an American company making a tractor better than anything coming out of South Korea, and that JD Green paint is off the charts expensive. Meanwhile, JD has been buying their utility tractors over seas for 30 years now. The have less HP, weaker frames, fewer options, and charging %25 more for the green and yellow paint job. So if you're going to buy Made In America, be smart about it. Make sure you're buying a better product instead of an inferior product that's over priced. Not sure how the "Swisher" splitter stacks up to box store products (not a whole lot to a splitter either way), but most of their stuff that I've looked at over the years wasn't any better than the import product setting next to it. To get a splittter that's noticeably better (same tonnage), you're looking at increasing the price by %30 to %50 for something like and Iron and Oak.

Hi ya Doug! Checked out the links, saw ur face n one of them 🙂. N all honesty, the prices for the log splitter aren’t that bad, I get $1100-1200 back on my taxes, i could save a few hundred more and have one. I’d rather buy American made keeping my US dollars here not to mention keeping our American brothers and sisters in a job. Thanks for sharing this Doug!

Here is a copy of their webpage : Swisher Log Splitters Are On The Chopping Block! Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow… In the illustrious world of log splitters, sometimes changes occur that are less than exciting. But we’ve learned to be as rugged as the top-notch products we offer, and while we’re sad to see them go, we wish Swisher the best in all endeavors abroad and thank them for the years of quality and commitment. Based on a critical evaluation of Swisher Log Splitter’s business and market position, they have made a decision to withdraw their log splitters from the marketplace. We have greatly enjoyed fulfilling customer’s needs with such an incredible brand; and while we will very much miss seeing the Swisher Log Splitter logo on our web pages, we look forward to supplying both loyal Swisher Log Splitter customers and newcomers alike with high-quality and reputable substitutes. We’ve set up a comprehensive list for you to save time and homework…because seriously, who likes homework?

Sir I watched you and the wife in another video picking split would off the ground carrying it, then putting it on the pile. If you have a wheelbarrow split the wood, throw it in the the wheelbarrow, push it to the pile, you will be saving your poor old 51 year old back.

WAY TO GO!!! Thank you so much for the video and for representing the hard-working men and women in AMERICA! I work in a steel factory that was affected by the cheap Chinese imports and the companies here in the US that thought they'd save a buck or two by buying and reselling imitation junk steel. My hats off to all who support the BUY AMERICAN CREED. I will be purchasing from this company most definitely! GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

It would be awesome if you could put the fluff at the end please. I shouldn’t buy a log splitter until I see your chickens guinneas horses and raised bed garden boxes? That was a great fact you stated and the factory was awesome. Good luck in your future endeavors.

I noticed that the splitting wedge on your log splitter is on the ram instead of at the end so the wood falls on the ground as soon as it splits. The wood staying up on the splitter let's you decide to split it again or toss it into the pile without needing to pick it up again. Of course the extension table helps with keeping it up where you can get it helps too.
