This video features the brand new Ryobi 40V Brushless Kinetic Log Splitter, Model #RY40740. This log splitter delivers 12 tons of splitting power and is 10X faster than a traditional hydraulic splitter. The fast 2 second cycle time is possible because of the kinetic design.
This tool was just announced and will be available for purchase this fall at The Home Depot. You can get it in a kit or tool-only.

It's a little different splitting wood compared to hydraulic. This one basically punches the wood with some follow through. Hydraulic is like a low gear that pushes through it.

What about seasoned Oak or Hickory? The noise level is pretty cool but I'm also impressed with the return time. My biggest complaint with gas/hydraulic splitters is how long of a split and return time it takes. I have never lost a splitting challenge to any logsplitter especially if I can use an old car tire. Lastly, even if you rent a log splitter once every once in a while, it will take a while to spend what you would on this Ryobi. Also, with renting equipment, there is no maintenance, or batteries to charge. Especially if you have limited or no electric.

@mriguy3202
@mriguy3202 11 ай бұрын
The battery cannot charge and be in use at the same time. Battery tools are now at the point that they can have more instantaneous power than a corded tool, due to the practical limitations of most 15 Amp circuits in the USA. So you could have a cord to the splitter that would charge when the tool is not in use but then the advantage of the cordless capability would be lessened.

I got a small electric hydraulic tabletop splitter for my mother in-law to split kindling, she is 80 years young and loves to us it. I feel the hydraulic splitters are safer because of the slower cycle time and the second your hand comes of the operating handle the cylinder retracts. I have been very impressed with the unit and what it will split. These units are fairly generic and sell under many different names at big box outlets and I paid $300 Cdn on sale. Btw, I split about 6 or more cords a year with a full size splitter and my mother in-law stacks every log! then makes me lunch, boy did I get lucky!

We had a Ryobi lawnmower fail and since we didn't have the receipt, we were screwed. Now our 40 V Ryobi snow thrower is almost junk, and I've had 2 40V batteries die, an 18 V leaf blower and a couple 18V drills die. I'm switching back to gas for big things. It's too bad, I was the biggest proponent of Electric tools, but they're really junk.

I have the 40 volt lawnmower and chainsaw from Ryobi and just about everything else they make in the 18volt product line. The problem is the batteries don’t last long enough. My 40v chainsaw doesn’t last long even with the 6 amp hr battery. And even though I haven’t used it much the battery is lasting less after each charge. One thing that is very important with lithium batteries is they need a balance board to make sure each cell gets the same charge. If not the battery pack can suffer premature failure. I have multiple 2 amp batteries that came with the tool and these don’t hold a charge even though they have only been used a few times. I am very pro Ryobi products but just like there competitors the batteries are a complete disappointment. They just don’t last. The run time is poor and it gets shorter after every charge.

I can split and stack a cord of locust in about 4 hrs. With 27 ton gas powered splitter. This ryobi splitter is a toy for homeowners that put on there carhartt pants a flannel shirt and cut a limb off a tree. You better have a second or third $400 battery for any significant wood splitting and I dont think it would even make it thru a 8 inch pc. Of locust or other not rotten hard wood. My opinion the only battery powered tools I've used that are worth anything are drills and some saws. My dad has a dewalt chain saw he used it a couple of times put it in the basement for a couple years now it needs a battery.😞

How make amps does that splitter draw? What does up to 150 splits mean? Do you have to be changing the logs like the Flash to get that many before the battery is done? If you left it running how late before that 4 amp hour battery is depleted?
@mriguy3202
@mriguy3202 11 ай бұрын
The amps draw is somewhat irrelevant because it runs on a single 40 Volt Ryobi battery, which is charged when not in use. It's hard to imagine that this machine will be used all day, but of course you could have a 2nd battery.

No thanks, portability means little to me, I have a log splitting station set up on my back porch, with a 5 ton electric splitter set at the proper height for me to work. I bring the rounds to it, pick them up, split them into a garden cart and move them in the cart then stack them on my back porch, so this tool is useless for me. If I was working with someone else and wanted to split in the field, I would still need two batteries to get enough wood and a special table to put it on so it would toss the wood into a trailer. Too much hassle for a 74 year old guy to mess with. Speed is not important, saving my back is!

Noise cancelling earmuffs. Wow, I thought earmuffs were just to keep your ears warm. I burn 8 to 12 inch blocks and not split them. These blocks you are splitting would go directly into the stove. It doesn't really fit my needs but I am impressed at its ability to split that bigger log. I've been a big fan of their 18v stuff since the blue tool era. I need a larger capacity and the ability to go vertical when the logs get too heavy to lift. I'd also be concerned about its longevity and durability. My Troybuilt 28T hydraulic can be serviced if necessary virtually every part is replaceable. You could probably modify a cheap Harbor Freight motorcycle lift with a plywood platform to put this splitter at a comfortable height.

This is really a niche tool that will not meet the needs of a lot of people. An axe works quite well for the type of wood you were splitting and costs a fraction of the price; this tool with battery sells for about $1000. Ryobi makes a corded splitter, not kinetic so it's slower and also lower rated capacity for about $100. For homeowner type needs, the knotty wood that's tough to split will not be well suited to this tool. Bending over a couple hundred times in an afternoon is not pleasant. If you had a pickaroon it would help.

I have, and use, a manual hydraulic log splitter. I PREFER it because it gives me exercise. With my log splitter I can kill two birds with one stone... exercise and firewood. So thanks and no thanks on ANYTHING that takes the work out of log splitting. I'm 74, soon to be 75 and healthy as a goat jumping fences. I have an excellent diet, making sure I get all the nutrients and nootropics I need. Many years ago, when I was in my 30s I discovered the ketogenic diet... a time BEFORE it became popular and was used only for epileptic patients. I did not have epilepsy, but the diet intrigued me, having been a practicing MD/NMD at the time so I went on the diet, followed it religiously and lost 80 pounds the first year on the diet. Since that time I have had NO ILLNESS of any kind, not even a cold nor headache. When I can't find a chore that provides exercise after having done all my chores (and there are plenty around my homestead) then I hike in the forest and top that off using my rowing machine and stationary bike. I use my bicycle for shopping at the grocery store if I don't need a week's supply of groceries. People don't realize how important it is to exercise throughout life. Because I've kept my body in shape, I can STILL do cartwheels. I do those in the back yard with my grandchildren. I don't see many people my age who are able to turn cartwheels. And I can't attribute my physical condition to genes. My family are sick quite often.

One thing is for sure, ain't no gas splitter splitting logs that fast thats for damn sure!! I'd imagine if you have seasoned logs and need to split for a wood stove (not furnace) it'd be just fine! With the price of fuel these days it'd probably pay itself off in one season 😂

Hmm, and I've just bought a small hydraulic 8t splitter (electric) - did look at a kinetic one but decided against due to almost double price and weight + supplier couldn't say much about reliability and durability... Had this Ryobi splitter come out a year ago I might have jumped on the 40V platform as well - I compromised on the chainsaw I bought last year just to stay with a single battery system (One+), and while I have no issues with that chainsaw a slightly more powerful unit with a slightly longer sword would have useful sometimes. Ryobi is often used as TTI's experimental division. If you go back to the blue NiCad days, that was even more true. Ryobi was making crazy tools for their 18v ecosystem. These days it's common for specialty tools to come from any cordless brand, but Ryobi still likely has more between their 18v and 40v lines. They are still used for experimental tools, but not quite as often anymore. A good example was their 18ga brad nailer. The onboard "compressor" had never been successfully tried before. It was a hit, so Ridgid and Milwaukee (Ridgid name is licensed, but made by TTI, goes by AEG outside or North America) adopted the same tech. Then other companies copied it.

Too bad it doesn't have a cord adapter for it... I could use one that sized, but I can also borrow a regular gas powered one if I need it. The noise level is much quieter... But I'd probably still wear something to protect my ears from that wine.

Yea no thanks. Hard Pass. I have a homemade splitter from 1986 with a Techumseh 16 hours I/C engine and I'll take mine all day. This splitter would be useless with the 4 foot diameter lodgepole pine I get every year for firewood. Let's put mine and that splitter to the test.

I have all the Ryobi 40v tools and use them a lot. The 14" chainsaw stays in my SxS at all times. It's awesome for limbing or trimming, doesn't require me to carry a gas can, and is quiet. When im bucking firewood, i do not use it. The 40v chainsaw is great for what it is designed to do, and cutting up a White Oak isn't in its repertoire. I don't see me buying this. It costs $1k, and weighs 200#. I can't lift it into the bed of my truck or haul it into the woods. I do like the speed as i have an electric splitter that cycles extremely slowly. I use it for kindling more than anything. May ikd gas splitter has been hauled across creeks, left at a tree for a month, and has split untold tons of wood in the last 25 years. This is a good idea, but won't fit most applications.

Given that I already have some 40v tools, this would be a great addition. Bet its great for mobile work like helping friends an family out with small jobs.

My back hurts just looking at it. Is there a leg kit to raise it up for normal humans? Awe nevermind, that thing would not split anything but branches where I live. And then when the battery goes dead you fire up a generator to charge your battery and wait 2 hours. No thanks. My 20 yo, 31 ton, Fossil fuel burning, fire breathing, super loud splitter will still be running fine, when this little waste of time is sitting in the corner of your garage unused for 5 years, and you are wondering why you fell for such a gimmick.

250V, 40V, 1.2V... doesn't matter much. The lower the voltage, the bigger the wire should be. any of those voltages can produce the same torque and horsepower as the other two. "40V" is immaterial and meaningless. All we care about is actual real-world HP... and voltage tells us nothing about the HP produced by any system. Know your electronics before you brag anything up.

What a remarkably stupid product. Everything about this thing screams "solution in search of a problem". Small 6 horse kinetic log splitters will slaughter this thing, last 5 times as long durability wise, won't murder your back, and don't use expensive lithium battery packs that are guaranteed to need to be replaced.

Only $1000 wow, much better than a $1000 dollar axe. I bet one of those $30 cone shaped drill bits would out split this toy just make sure to use the new Ryobi cordless drill with it.

I can’t believe they are picking on such young trees, 10” diameter or less(ha,ha). Just like the auto industry I just don’t think a fully electric log splitter is where it needs to be right now. Maybe small jobs but definitely not for someone splitting 7-10 cords or a commercial operation.

I saw somebody in the comments calling this thing a beast. Lol Battery power devices are a joke. They are absolutely convenient. However they cannot do everything. Wait until you find out that it's $20,000 for the battery that's in your car. And the rebate is only 5 grand. And the work is probably another 5 grand. And besides the children they are using they are certainly not using electric tools to mine the lithium that's going in all of this.

This is great. I've got a 40v chainsaw and brush cutter to do some land clearing. I've been just ripping logs with the chainsaw, this might close a gap and save some wear and tear on the chainsaw. Nice. Hope it works with less than perfectly seasoned logs. Thanks Ryobi

I have a cordless log splitter. I can tow it behind my truck and take it anywhere. With 2 gallons of gas I can split more "cuts" than I have strength to feed it. I've used it and my stihl farm boss chainsaw for 30 years. Only service for splitter once. I split rounds bigger than I can lift or get my arms around. (Vertical mode) electric splitters are nice toys for the urbanite who wants to play outside. Their city probably bans wood heating anyway...

Uh, I don't know who would find this useful. If you're someone who's going to plop down $1000 or more on a log splitter you're probably going to be splitting a fair amount of wood to feed into your wood stove so that you don't have to pay for oil or gas. For ten years I've been heating almost exclusively with wood that I get for free and split it with my gas log splitter. I'd say I broke even on my $7000 (between the stove and splitter) investment a couple of years ago. If all I had was this splitter or an axe I'd have to go back to the axe. Saying all that, it is impressive for what it can do with such little power input.

We got given one to try for the weekend. We were pretty excited but unfortunately it could not get through one red gum log. After three pulls it just got stuck. Tried on smaller logs, possibly six inches with similar results. Bending over was not such a problem we just pulled it onto a pallet.

Looking forward to checking this out at our off grid cabin. I take delivery this weekend. I had gas powered for years. No matter how careful I always spil a bit of gas when refilling or oil when changing oil. Then there are issues with the spark plug noise etc. I love the Ego products and have gone over to electric. I have a great Eccoflow solar system so easy to charge the batteries. Great review

Not worth it if you do the math. 150 logs split per charge. If quartered, that's 37.75 Logs split and quartered. On one charge. Not worth it not even close to gas.

Looks like you’d expend more effort than just splitting with an axe. And there’s no way I’d be splitting the oak rounds I have out back right now. We have hydraulics you know. Why reinvent the wheel and put up with an inferior product?

You're lucky to get 20 minutes of work out of the 40v chainsaws with the larger capacity batteries. I know because i have them. That splitter would be done working before i felt like i got started. Maybe it would be ok if you only needed enough would split for camping a day or two.

Those oversized rounds looked way to light and that was verified as soon as we saw the interior rot. Ill stick with my gas powered/hydraulic machine that can destroy 100lbs-4ft dia rounds all day. Vertically of course.

And the log splitting bad back award goes to Ryobi. Can’t see who would buy this when you can get other good kit at half the price I.e. Forest Master. I suppose the unique selling point is that it is battery powered but at $1000 it’s way too expensive.

It is a bit silly. The same work can be done with an axe for $1000 less but I do admire the ingenuity. All these companies are cashing in on the "green" craze today and in a few years the landfills are going to be overwhelmed with this plastic junk and non recycled batteries. I can rebuild a motor and weld steel, that is sustainable, plastic is not.

looks like an ergonomic nightmare. Just what I want to do, bend over literally the entire time I'm splitting some wood. No thanks. Easier to do what you just did with a large round, a tire with sidewalls cut off, and a nice splitting maul like a grandfors.

Not at all useful since I have little reason to split 8" logs. The cost is comparable to a good gas hydraulic unit that will actually do some real work.
