For older boats, I would increase the maintenance expense to 15-20%

Looking to upgrade from my current 23 Chris craft buddy cabin. I’ve run into a bit of coin and I’m not looking to charter just run me and the boys offshore from port canaveral. Eyeballing a 45 Viking. A boat same model I used to mate on back in the day. She’s sitting at roughly 450k. Watching this video taught me a lot. Thank you guys for that! Appreciate all the honesty.

Don't we know that well! Just dropped $3k today on a new air conditioner for the master stateroom. And that's with me doing the installation. 😮 Next up - canvas work over the winter. It never ends, but owning a boat is all about the experience of getting over that horizon and enjoying life on the water 😊

12 years ago I sold my SF and went to a center console. Back then I figured she was costing me somewhere around $60K year in maintenance, insurance, slip fees, fuel, tackle, diver to clean the bottom, tournament entry fees, and all of the other stuff that comes with owning a sportfish. The center console was less but not all that significant when you add in that I could no longer sleep on the boat and had to get a hotel room when on a trip. All in all, these toys are expensive. BUT... you do not buy a boat to save money!

Eventually I’ll switch from luxury to sport fishing. In the sound there’s no need for a sportfisher so we went with a 40 foot Silverton. I love running a big boat. It’s like owning a mini house.

@@saltwaterfishinguniversity technically I can fish on it because it has an open cockpit in the back with a 13 foot beam and 3 rod holders in the back and 3 on each side but honestly I have no gear and have no idea where to even start. I’ve never fished for anything but bluefish and striped bass.

I based my costs based on an hourly rate, I held in reserve. At the time, I set aside $44 per engine hour. Same reserve as owning and operating a aircraft. If the name of the generator starts with Onan, "run Will Robinson, run". There was only one dealer within 100 miles. Discuss the fuel consumption as well as dockage fees. You might look into doing oil analysis, as a means to extend oil and filter changes as well as giving you an idea if something internally is starting to go south.

Great note, a 200 hour service may cost 900$ but a 1000 hour service cost $15-30,000. Hard to come up with that extra. I’ve been doing $50/hr total, but yours makes more sense. Engine 1 Engine 2 Gen

Every time I look at a 40ft flybridge and have a blood rush, I stop and think. I can tow my 26ft alloy hard top a 1000 miles to another location, fish, dive and then go a 1000 miles some where else for about $400 each trip.

My buddy and i were planning on picking up a 30ish foot boat to start running some charters. He wasn't fully aware of just the basic costs associated with a bigger boost. And that wasn't included if we blew a motor or had something really bad happen. And he thought we would be making allot more then what it really is 😆. He was getting atrocious advice on prices from a complete idiot. I told him to go and actually look at charter boat prices in our area and after he did he realized how wrong he was 😆 🤣 😂. Plus it made me realize that having a partner is a terrible idea
