I would love to see a comparison of Split Eq with the (now free) Ozone 11 EQ which also has a similar transient control function. I have the Ozone and like it, but the effect seems "subtle", i.e. don't expect huge differences. I don't own Split eq so I can't compare.

Thank you for this - I have Split EQ and love it! I was tempted to also buy Sheen Machine and DeBoom when on special as they were so cheap, but so glad I saw this video! I'm trying to stop all my $20-$50 impulse plugin buys as they add up to significant $$$ quickly - instead I'm focusing on buying quality (plugins with a broad range of applications) over quantity...

If you read the blurb again it looks like Sheen Machine is boosting the Tonal High component. You boosted the High Transients in Split EQ. The comparison examples sound very different to me. If you boosted the Tonal Highs in Split EQ it would probably be very close to Sheen Machine I'm guessing.

I guess these are for beginners who don't know how to use an EQ yet. Eventide probably wants to get a foot in the door with younger producers to build a long-term relationship and sell them more advanced plugins later on.

Great video, thanks! By the way, does anyone pick up a difference in dynamics between the new plugins and the Split? I'm away from my monitors but on gaming headphones I thought I heard either a stereo-linked soft clipper or limiter which seemed to be leveling the transients -- 1, maybe 3db? The Split EQ would eclipse these in the studio for sure, but perhaps the new plugins can help podcasters or live vocal mic setups, especially on PA systems -- simple 'can't miss' enhancing knobs could be handy in those use cases!

On YT the Split-Eq has some more 4-6k transient peaks.. I use original YAM NS10 to compare.. on neo club and catacombs hard trance this will kill you ears in this eq range.. and the deboom has some more low mid transients in your compare..

Did you watch the video? The Sheen is EQing the transients only, the whole point of him using the Eventide SplitEQ is that it only boosts the transients and not the tonal information. The point of this review is to say that these plugins do what the Eventide SplitEQ does. You can't do this with a standard plugin.

Agreed, I noticed that too It appears that the transient (green) side from Split EQ is being used in the A/B here with Sheen rather than the harmonic (blue) side. Seems like blue would be preferred. However, in the A/B of DeBoom with Split, it appears that the harmonic/blue side of Split is being used, which makes more sense, at least to me. I absolutely agree that Split EQ is a much better investment. I'm currently using it a lot, with great success. Highly recommended.

Actually, it's not the same at all. I think you've made a mistake. I think they are boosting the tonal information on the sheen machine. I hear a lot more bright transients on your split-EQ setting, which makes sense, because you boosted them. So I agree that these plugins are very useless for an owner of the Split EQ, but I think your demonstration in this instance is very flawed. I might be mistaken, but that's my clear impression from the quick listen. I'm pretty confident about it. So the deboom cuts the tonal information of low frequencies and the sheenmachine boosts the tonal information of the high frequencies. I mean no disrespect - we all do mistakes sometimes.

The sheen case doesn't shound identical simpy because the exact Q and boost are mayby not set perfectly, who knows, maybe it's even a bell instead of a shelf, but it definately boosts transients. Think for a bit, what ywould be the logic to boost tonal? it would precisely boost the sibilants and harsh sustained sounds that the plugin specifically says it avoids. With the transients instead, it just ads detail/contrast, without becoming overly harsh.

Honestly, the difference in sound is so big, I'm very confused that he didn't notice it. Maybe he's trolling. But you are 100% mistaken and I am 100% correct. *edit* Furthermore, it is quite common to boost tonal high-end and tame the transients. It's the other way around for lowend, but in highend you want the air without the harsh transients. That's why you use de-essers for example - they grab the transients and let the tonal information pass. It's also the reason why it's common to boost highend aggressively followed by a (fast attack and release) compressor. Low-end often has the issue of building up tonal information, because low frequencies are slow (a lot of tonal info), but you want to preserve the punch/fast info (transients). High-frequency transients often have the issue to be piercing and tiring for your ears - tonal information is usually not a big issue there.

This sounds suspiciously like "ensh!tification" if you're familiar with the term. Cory Doctorow wrote a book describing how companies, some bought by private equity firms and others just having their executive branch replaced by dead eyed finance bros, end up getting hollowed out for fast profits with products like this. I'm sure the end of Moog will be similar. Eventide might be on it's way out if they're doing rinky dink crap like this. Really too bad. Split EQ is amazing.

SplitEQ in a knob, yeah? Please be reminded that there are different audiences for different projects. For some, the "one knob" bit is perfect...maybe for just parts of the mix or the whole thing. Perhaps, music producers should be aware that many of their activities can be reduced to fewer steps et al?
