We bought a 1989 43' Irwin MKIII 2.5 years ago from Sodus Pt NY. Traveled down the Erie Canal then sailed to Boston and then down to Key Biscayne Fla to the Bahamas 2 winters in a row! What a beautiful cruising boat this was!!

I've seen several very well maintained, well preserved Irwin 52's. This was not one of them. As for the IP 38, that interior wood looks to be in rough shape. If you can see it in the pictures, that means it's really bad in person. It looks like the boat spent some time further south.

My first "real" boat is/was an O'Day 25 CB. For a 42 year old boat, she is still in great shape. I've had the typical issues of such an old boat: a couple of soft spots around stanchions and I did have to rebuild the transom (from the inside) due to a poorly maintained lower rudder mount seal that weeped into the wooden core. These were easily fixed. The boat is laid out like a much larger boat and has been a lot of fun for my wife and two young kids. I did a LOT of research before buying a "trailer sailer" and settled on either the O'Day 25 or Catalina 25. Both have very similar specs. but very happy with the O'Day. I love that the weight is in the shoal keel and not in the swing keel (like the Catalina). That means, she'll sail with the CB up, down, or any position in between. One of the key specs. that I kept my eye on for these small boats was Capsize Rating (sailing the Great Lakes). The O'Day 25 comes in at a very respectable 2.02.

I have learned that that's a common problem with pre-1989 Catalina 30s. They put plywood at the keel joint, and it rots and then causes the keel to loosen. It can be fixed, but later Catalina 30s didn't have this problem. They stopped putting plywood there.

diesel fuel tank contamination from bilge water....huge operation to replace the fuel tanks. compression test on the engine. fresh water tank contamination, also requiring extraction and replacement, replumbing.....boat may never come back together again the right way.... agreed on undue moving parts, the more moving parts the greater failure points, no center boards for me... keel bolts are a crucial area. typos in the ad are red flags for me
@davidburgess24712 жыл бұрын
Tim, I just listened to your comments about the Catalina 30. I have an 86 C34 which had a similar problem. The early boats had a plywood spacer between the hull and the bilge floor. In my case, water had leaked from a crack in the keel seam and up through a couple keel bolts. Some of the plywood showed rot in some test holes. We cut open the bilge floor, dug out the plywood and built up layers of fiberglass according to Catalina instructions. I imagine G10 could be used to speed the process. A dirty job but certainly doable. We also lowered the keel a few inches, cleaned the mating surfaces, new sealant and a couple layers of fiberglass over the keel seam and there have been no issues since.

You remind me so much of my uncle, may he rest in peace. I've always been into cars, and when I was 17, I was going to spend $1,700 on a '79 Camaro. Luckily, I asked him to give it a look-over and sure enough, the car had been in a major front end collision and all the steering components were literally jury rigged back together with *wire!* I could have easily lost control of the car and had a very serious accident! I learned so much about cars from him! At one point he had a close friend that was selling a '69 Camaro SS - in 95% grade A condition. The only thing it needed was paint and some engine work due to it having been sitting for almost 15 years. It was a bit pricey, but I had the money in cash ready to go. Unfortunately, someone else found out and bought it out from under me!! Today, that car would be worth in excess of 30 grand - at least, because it had the 396 engine and the two rows of square louvres over the carb and all the chrome was *pristine!* I could kick myself for not making the decision right there and then. My uncle had looked it over and said it was in amazingly well kept condition! I better get to what I was going to ask you or my head will explode!😡 Tim, you had mentioned in one of your videos that a particular boat maker builds their hulls from thick fiberglass, then let's it sit for a month for curing/drying. Which company was that and which others build similarly stout hulls?? Thanks Tim!!
@Lighthouse6b2 жыл бұрын
Catalina had a problem years ago in that the deck around the mast was too week and under normal stress, the deck wound arch up and loose deck support. That may be what you saw. Later models had strengthening of this area to prevent the flexing. I forget now but it may have used a steel plate.

@neiltreadgold57202 жыл бұрын
For European boats this is a common practice and most boats are designed to sit on the hard at low tide. Nothing wrong with this. As for the Catalina 30 keel stub repair, it is the reason for the smile on early 30's that used wood as a keel filler. Its a 4 day repair and super easy. I just did mine by digging the wood out and using Marine Coosa board and re-glassing back in. I cant comment on the 17k boat, but its not a hard fix other than time. If all you have is under 20k most boats are not looked after like a more expensive boat. For most it doesn't justify the care from owners, please also bear in mind that most boats that are this price are 40+years old and need some love and repairs. I been on newer Benny's and Jen's that have faired worse at 5 years old.

That Catalina is junk. A broken keel stub floor is work. High copper and iron in a marine diesel... I'm betting the entire isn't run much. Copper would come from the heat exchanger, wrist pins and rocker arms but because iron levels were elevated with it, it's not coolant related but lack of running. So each dry startup after sitting is adding to it. Also because marina diesels are not drained from the drain plug but rather suction those two metals would build up if the owner is not running the engine for a few minutes prior to changing.

Irwin’s are some of the worst boats ever built. Look at the materials used and the way it was built originally. He’s spot on. Friends do not let friends buy Irwin’s. @Dustin Allen Wow you are a sad surveyor to put out a general statement like this. As a professional surveyor you should know that could hold you liable for this statement if you cause my boat value to depericate. Please back your statement up with some actual hard evidence not your opinion. What materials are you refering to, what part of the boat was not assembled correctly, what years or models? A good survey can back up a general statement that would lump all Irwins into one junk category. I supose you say the same for all Hunters. Where did you get you qualifications to be a surveyor?

@@CaptainDustinAllen A good surveyor would know that 'Oil Caning' can happen to any boat if jack stands and slings are not properly placed per the boat manufacturer. So are you telling me that all Irwins that have been properly slung and stored correctly have Oil Canning issues? That's a mighty bold statement. All the Irwin defenders on here seem to have never been on a solid boat. Please go look at how the Irwin’s were built. Look at the methods used and the materials. Compare them to a solid boat like a pacific seacraft or a island packet. Just because you have or have had an Irwin and it didn’t sink doesn’t mean it’s a good boat. Irwin’s are down right dangerous boats. Iv surveyed many Irwin’s. I have worked on boats professionally for years and I would never recommend an Irwin to a client. In fact I use Irwin and hunter to explain the difference between a dangerous boat and a solid boat. I show them evidence of why Irwin’s are poorly built dangerous money pits. Oil canning hulls, cheap interiors, thin fiberglass, poorly screwed down hull to deck joint, the list goes on and on. Sorry, not sorry but do not discredit this guys knowledge. Tim, friends don't let friends buy Hunters, or Chevys. I would like you list your credentials to speak about boats (Irwin to be exact), or any other brand. I hear people like you poo-poo Irwins and it ticks me off. Do you think the Irwins all around the world were flown in? I own an 1989 43 MKIII Irwin. Last year when I put the bow thruster I found the glass in the front was close to an inch thick. It gets thicker as you move aft. The idiot who commented below about the glass be suspect has probably never left his mom's basement. If you feel the need to bash Irwins because you found photos of one that's been neglected, maybe your next video you should go to Florida reporting on damaged boats and tell people not to buy them because they brake in a storm. Sadly new boaters will watch this video and mistake you for someone who actually knows something of what they speak. Keep your vids to something you actually know, and can back up with actual facts.
