When boxing legends and stars do this, it’s mainly for show. When a coach does this to develop a fighter that hasn’t developed insane basics yet, it’s reversing the skill level. Seen many of these paddy cake videos, where the boxer has no technique at all, but remembers a 20 punch combo that makes no sense if you cannot react with it, rotate your hips and connect precisely with power and speed.

I bet all of the Floyd haters on here feel like they finally had a victory against the Undefeated Professional Champion LOL. The Mayweather pad work is about muscle memory in transitional movements along with making contact. They're not really combos, they mimic all possible transitional movements you can do in boxing. And like anything you practice, you will get good at it and not have to think about it.

I always thought of it as a kind of fitness drill and not the only type of mittwork that should be done. People want to emulate their favourite fighters though, for example people want to do Peek-a-boo style boxing even though it doesn't suit most fighters.

Floyd himself said that he sees fighters doing flashy padwork and they don’t know the basics like turning their punches over. He even discussed squatting and bending the knees when hitting the heavy bag. Floyd has a routine and regimen that extends far beyond padwork. I’m sure there’s a reason he does the way he does it.
@billbill60942 ай бұрын
The "But it worked for him so you're a bad boxer" comments tell me most of these people never put on gloves in their life (especially when said to a pro undefeated, 7 time national champ, olympic medalist boxer). Then go on and chainsmoke, drink, do all the drugs you can get your hands on because some of the greatest fighters ever have done so and it worked for them. At the end of the day this padwork doesn't produce good fighters save the _1,_ and that's why most coaches will never have their fighters do this. Just ignore the reasoning behind why padwork is done, don't consider maybe he's good _in spite_ of it, and ignore the hundred+ years of pugilism has whipped padwork into its current, proven effective shape. All because one good fighter did a drill wrong, sure. Boxing is a democracy, not a dictatorship where your top guy determines what's law. _You_ are never going to get good thinking like this and following any poor training method. People glazing Floyd seriously need to realize how dumb that argument is, it's like people who justify their inability to keep their hands up because they saw one good fighter who also can't (who likely had phenom power and great head movement and reach their fans don't have to make up for it) so fans act like it's their own style instead of their weakness.

Side tangent but people who think Floyd is the best fighter to ever live in human history really really need to learn about other combat sports, heck ignore grappling and mma and just look at striking sports specifically, Muay Thai, kickboxing, etc. I'm not making the obvious argument of "he'd lose in this because he doesn't know anything about this and this and that so he's not a great fighter" (even though some of you yourselves use that logic when it comes to the Tenshin fight), I'm saying seriously look at the feats and prowess of champs and legends from other sports and compare it. Then see how much the feats of some legends pale in comparison to the GOATs of those same sports. Floyd isn't "the greatest human fighter ever born, if you distill it down to his ability in his sport compared to others ability in their sport" (this is the way most seem to mean it). In terms of fighting there are people who've had more impressive work to their name and a mastery of a skill ceiling that's just higher. Just because you guys _only_ understand boxing (or pretend you do) or because you don't put respect on other combat sports the way you put respect on boxing doesn't make Floyd the fight messiah or the pinaccle of human fighting capability (however you'd even determine that for a person who only has punches and only has to worry about punches.)

Look at the Shane Mosley fight. 🤔 It’s like not knowing how to dribble a basketball but you want to perform fancy crossovers all day that don’t work in game 😫. I think Floyd is semi trolling with the mitt work for cameras. He also use to show himself eating fast food. He also made it seem like McGregor had a chance to win. I like Floyd. No way !! Mitts are far better in my opinion. You can move around the ring and work on both attack and defense. The trainer can dynamically create targets that you have to react to, as well as simulate punches that you have to defend. The heavy bag is a useful tool for sure, but a good trainer on the mitts is far superior. Properly used the mitts are much closer to actual fighting.

Defensive footwork, punching and lateral side to side angles, whilst visualizing an opponent trying to walk me down. Or the opposite way. One thing i hate with mit work is they never purposly make the fighter miss the mits. I do this all thr time as every punch wont land and it trains recovey. Most people get hit because of a bad recovery because they dont have a place they plan stop thier punch and begin the recovery if they miss. They just throw the attack and dont even have a plan for what part the punch should enf if it doesn hit. Let alone being able to recognize mid attack that your attack will fail. If your attaxk is going to fail turn it into a fient and go some where else. Another issue i have is people always holding the mit in the same spot. Like every time they hold for a jab its in the same spot. Move the hand around have them jab at all kinds of angles and distances. Force them to compensate for a distance change mid jab even.

If its works for Floyd then I don't think he need to "change" his pad training style unless hes just fooling around just to trick us(sins Curmel motion and other boxer using that kind of pad works style sometimes then I cant say its "bad" atm). Like you said I wouldn't recommend for new people because it "might" create a bad habit UNLESS trainer know the reason why they are doing that kind of pad work(if the trainer don´t know why the real foundation/reason of floyd pad work then the boxer will really have a bad boxing foundation.). Keep in mind that experience/professional boxer will some extend break their boxing foundation. We all have heard don't cross you leg. Don´t lower your guard etc etc but yet professional boxer does it in some extend. Even me(no I´m not a professional boxer) who has been training boxing for almost 14 years stops drilling some extend beginner boxing style or use it(like it exist different boxing style then it also exist different TYPE of jab, cross, hook and uppercut) unless "countering/defending" specific boxing technique. If I would do the floyd pad works(what I think the reason they are doing it) it´s mostly to active "right" muscle group and hip rotation and muscle memories without relying only "arm muscle" when they hit the pads but that's my opinion. So any American people who has train in Mayweather boxing gym please explain the reason of that pad work.😁

His padwork, you can see he throws his punches with proper technique which a fighter should always do, he moves & creates new angles, you have to stay focus, which every fighter should do during the whole fighter, & it's freestyle, which is what happens when fighters fight, in those moments in the fight, fighters react to what they see from there opponent or want to setup.

I agree with you that hitting the mitts like that is completely unrealistic so far as throwing punches in a real fight is concerned. And I also agree that Floyd looked less than tremendous when throwing "normal" punches in mitt work with the other bloke! Floyd is getting on a bit, as you rightly said... However, from what I saw, the guy holding the mitts needs to work on his pad skills, too, for it is definitely a skill. Seem to recall that Carl Froch once said that his coach "made him look good" when they were on the pads! A bit of modesty on Carl's part (unusually so, perhaps you will say, although I think it had more to do with the fact that he clearly admired his coach, and rightly so!). Personally, I think the truth of it is that both boxer and mitt trainer need to be good for the end product to look good. To test this theory, find a phenomenal boxer (mmm, like yourself!) and then invite a novice / relative novice to work the mitts for you... My guess is that it won't look good! I also seem to recall that a well-known coach,Tunde Ajayi, who used to train people at the Peacock Gym in London, was a huge fan of the Floyd and Roger pitty-pat mitt work. Tunde had reams of paper with all his combinations on them! Very amusing, or at least I found it so. Mind you, he was selling his "Stamina for Sale." Accordingly, for the reasons you mention (the middle-aged paying client who feels a million dollars on the mitts as a result), his training method had purpose. And then, of course, there was Anthony Yarde, Tundi's tremendous light heavyweight. He must have done quite a bit of pitty-pat with Tunde. I've seen some on film. When Yarde got into the ring competitively, he usually knocked his opponents out, so there was definitely no "pitty-pat" there!!! However, I'm sure the stamina and timing that goes with the pitty-pat mitt work must have come in handy. If only he'd had just an ounce more, he'd have won the Kovalev fight. No, the real problem as I see it would be doing pitty-pat too much, thereby failing to concentrate on "normal" mitt work.

Everyone just needs to stop trying to be right all the time. Fighting is art and it’s all objective. There’s pros and cons to each way of pads or any sorts of training. We need to uplift everyone and obviously give constructive criticism but not with such arrogance or the ego. Uplift, that’s it.

Roger the Real Black Mamba had trouble with his vision because of diabetes. I wonder if the modified pitty pat mitt work had to do with that? On a side note, i consider roger the toughest of the Mayweathers. He fought with finesse & guts, and got in there with some real lions. He didn't always have all the advantages in his matches but always came to fight nonetheless. God bless him. Rest in peace Black Mamba!

Haha he’s not saying he was doing it the wrong way, he’s saying his advanced level mitt work can’t be done by low level beginner boxers, with patterns, defense, timing, range management and endurance training built in, the work he did with Roger suits HIM because he’s known how to fully and properly throw punches and has since he was a child, but is the wrong way for your basic ass. I love how all these people hate on Floyd even though he easily beat your favorite fighter. Watch the Gatti fight to see Floyd embarrass a legend in the sport with his combinations, after that, he chooses to be defensive, why use 6 shots when you can beat a guy with 2 and still have plenty of gas in the tank. Also, once he started breaking his hands, he took a low risk, Out point the opponent approach. Smart, tactical, efficient, sweet scientist. Where’s the video on how Floyd is the cleanest fighter in the sport and voluntarily did blood and urine testing each fight never once failing. The haters don’t focus on that. Or how the richer he got the harder he trained, unlike most humans. That check Hook while going backwards causing Hatton to head butt the corner must still sting for these Uk guys that hate. I hope it’s not anger over him ko’ing Drunkard Mcgregor, that was easy work and dude never dared step foot in a boxing ring again. I normally like your content but this was disappointing. For all these people who have a problem with Floyd, he must have done something right, for you to still be talking about him 7 years after he retired.

Floyd was a great boxer. No one can deny it. But I feel he has hurt the sport of boxing as a whole. Just my opinion

@Tony_Jeffries He was great, but boring. Pretty much killed HBO boxing. Took McGregor away from MMA while he was champ and in his prime. Fighting Logan Paul and other pretenders. Seems like a shitbag in real life as well. Cherry picks fights. Dodging Pac Man in his prime and refusing to fight Margarito. No one individual is bigger than the sport, but he thinks he is. I think hes a terrible role model for up and coming boxers. I could be biased though. Thanks for the reply Tony. Big fan!!

Floyd took Conor away from MMA while he was in his prime? So you blame Floyd for another man opting NOT to defend his titles, and not the man himself, nor the organization that he is a champion in? It’s Floyd’s fault? I’m sorry brother, but I couldn’t even get past that point to read the rest. I know people hate on Floyd, but my gosh. People criticize his personal life, but you would struggle to find a fighter who didn’t have dirt on their name. It’s just the media loves to highlight Floyd, and angry fans love to rally against him. “He took McGregor away from MMA…” 🤣

Anyone remember the lead up to the Mayweather/Hatton fight .. where Ricky Hatton was making fun of the mitt work? And then after Floyd knocked him out, Hatton fired his trainer, hired Big Floyd, and we saw Hatton doing the mitt work? Hahahaha .. There's a method to the Mayweather madness .. and some people understand that nothing succeeds like success. You ain't gonna get more successful than Little Floyd ...

No Tony , the pads work was great for Floyd, maybe not for others. At the Floyd is 50 - 0 , & a Hall of Famer! Also his uncle was a 2 division champion.

I don't remember him doing any of that against Gatti though lol. I do remember Gattis corner throwing in the towel against Gattis wishes just off of a soft brittle hand Floyd body shot. "We got a word for that in anglish, it's called suh-spicious" lol. Yes Gatti was being outboxed and yes Floyd was probably gonna win anyways, but still.

What was Floyd 50-0 right? Are we even thinking about ridiculous this topic is it worked for him beautifully who in the world can sit there and say it’s not how you should do it
@user-mi7bk5ie6r4 ай бұрын
Sorry, I will disagree on that one. While I agree Floyd contradicts himself a bit, I think therenis different use of mitt work. It might be to train reflexes, drill in a certain combo that you cinsider useful against the next opponent, or drill out a bad habit. Just hybseeing footage and criticise on that feels a bit too simple for me.

I’ve been struggling with doing mitt work at the my gym. I find it hard keeping my punches accurate and managing distance so that my knuckles land flush on the pad, and my punches usually get smothered by the mitts. Most of the time my elbows are still bent and I can’t fully extend my punches. Any tips? I’ve been thinking of getting a double end bag to improve my timing and accuracy.

I remember watching you. I watched a lot of video on you also. Boxing skills, you and Floyd weren't even on the same planet!. You're closer than most though. And you're 100% right. To bad your hands kept breaking because you were a good fighter. Hard puncher! I believe you could've been a serious contender. Bernard Hopkins would've been tough for you though. I bet you are wonderful fitness coach! Enjoyed your the video.
