Good to know on Elmer T Lee being that close to Buffalo Trace. I doubt my unrefined palate could tell the difference. Just finished a bottle of Buffalo Trace again recently after a long break from it, and still just "meh" on it. Knowing all this, I'll probably spend my bourbon $ on something different than these two. Thanks for the great info and entertaining discussion!

In SoCal, some stores that have access to BT can get pallets of it - price wars just over/under $20. But Elmer T Lee? $150-200 at a local shop that up charges anything that even has a hint of allocation. But people buy it up. It’s the one bottle that I’ve often heard buyers remorseful about the price but reminiscing on why they always bite when they see it. Talk about the power of suggestion. They could just keep topping off their bottle with $20 BT but it wouldn’t be the same because they would know.

I bought a bottle of ETL in 2021 for $40. I have yet to open it. I know Josh, whiskey Selection, not Collection. Sounds like I'm not missing much and should crack it open. Thoughts?
@stuffandwhiskey8 ай бұрын
99.9% of the bottles we have are opened so we're likely not able to provide an objective opinion. Our stance is that you can't know whether you like it unless you open it and try it. That said, there is some merit in keeping certain special bottles sealed and opening them on special occasions and/or with special people. That said, we wouldn't personally categorize ETL as "special bottle" territory so we'd open it up and start trying it compared to other things you own.

Another great video. I have an ETL that is really good. I got lucky and walked into one of my favorite stores last year right as it came off the truck. I paid around $45 for mine and while it’s good, I agree that it’s not worth more than that. On the other hand I have 3 single barrel store picks of Buffalo Trace that are phenomenal. I just mixed equal amounts of all 3 in bottle to enjoy later. Then my favorite store Allocated-AK is getting another single barrel Buffalo Trace in soon and I will buy at least 1 or 2 bottles of it.

I haven't gotten around to trying Elmer T. Lee yet. Where I live, it can only be found in museums, and even there, it doesn't turn up often. One of the local bars gets it on occasion and doesn't charge too much, so maybe I'll eventually try it there. Total Wine just came out with a lottery on which it is included. I figured that I might as well enter the lottery despite the low probability of getting anything. I selected Elmer T. Lee as one option, but not at top priority - there were a few others that interested me more. This is the only way I would ever buy a bottle - the price is $45. Elmer T. Lee is one of many examples of the absurd levels of hype that have formed around Buffalo Trace products. In most cases, I have not found the hype to be justified. They are good products, but I've rarely found any qualities in them that make them stand out strongly from the crowd. I'll buy them only if the price matches the quality, which seldom happens. It's easier to buy good bottles that are readily available, and for something a little more interesting, store picks of Knob Creek, Maker's Mark, Russell's Reserve, and Four Roses turn up regularly and don't cost a fortune.
