“你叫什么名字?” is textbook language, and we don’t use it in most situations. In Chinese, just
like in other languages, it is often more polite to be a little indirect. If you meet someone for the first time and don’t know their name, the easiest way is just telling them your name, and the other person will tell you his or her name. In spoken Chinese training lesson 2, I'm going to teach you some other natural ways to ask someone's name and help you sound more polite in Chinese conversations.

I hate this kind of videos, it's hopeless and pushes me to stop learning the language once and for all. it's full of videos like this on youtube, don't say 你好, don't say 再见, so it's better to stop learning chinese if I'm never going to use what I'm learning! They could have said "other ways to say this/other manners to say that", but no, they just say "don't say"!

My take: like many other textbook expressions, 你叫什么名字 is totally fine. It's just that textbooks teach you the gramatically correct way to speak the language. But it won't teach you how the language is used in everyday life, you have to spend some time in the country to experience that, it's not really something you can learn in a classroom. And as the comment section shows, the usage of words and expressions vary from region to region (China is a big country), so even your teacher might not be able to provide complete information on how to use them, they can only teach you how ppl from their region use it.

比如说我们说的Hi比过去的How do you do?

I really like lessons like this where you teach us what is used in everyday speaking or real situations. I do have a question, if a native speaker sees this, feel free to answer. I work in a position in the criminal justice field. When I interrogate someone, I have to ask details such as their name, their address etc.. If I am speaking in Mandarin to a Chinese person who can not speak any English, at that point would it be acceptable to be more direct in my questions and say 你叫什么名字 to an adult? In this hypothetical situation, it would be someone who may or may not have been involved in a crime, so I need this information, it's not a happy type of meeting. Obviously I get an interpreter for them for the full interview, but initially upon detaining them, I need to know name, address, birthdate, etc.. Any insight would help, because I notice Mandarin speakers tend to be very indirect when asking questions or hinting at things etc.. but what about an interview or interrogation? Like in my job?

Yes, in this formal situation, it's proper to ask directly:"你叫什么名字?",or "你的名字是什么?". I think this kind of direct asking suits when you are on every quite formal occassion, like going through customs.

In your situation, you don't need to show additional respect. So politeness-wise, 你叫什么名字 is absolutely fine. Other ways asking this, like 怎么称呼, may have other problem. One can also answer 怎么称呼 (how should I call you?) with "Mr. Zhang" or "the king", something like that. You can also be even more specific by saying "你的姓名?"(Your family name and given name?) or even just "姓名?" so they won't just give their last name.

can say but its a direct translation from English "what is your name". its ok to use it for peers or informal occasion. It may seem rude when use it for formal event or towards elderly or people of higher stature

You're saying not to use " 你叫什么名字? " But when we watch Chinese drama or movies, we can see that they're using this sentence to ask someone's name.

I don’t think “你叫什么名字” is rude... it’s just tedious to say. I usually say “你叫啥” or just give them my name and expect them to respond. The former sounds like you are introducing yourself to a new person, whereas the latter sounds the same except that it feels like you think you are so famous that everyone should have heard your name even though they have not seen you. Oh and that’s why I usually use the second one🌝

I think it's better to rename this title as "Instead of "你叫什么名字", try to use "你好,怎么称呼" etc." To people who are learning chinese, they might find this video discouraging instead of encouraging as they have to throw away what they've learnt and relearn the correct way. Honestly, "你叫什么名字" has been so generalised, it sounds normal to be used in daily life, though I do agree that it's mainly used for those younger than you. In singapore, we'd still go by "你叫什么名字" because our usual conversations are always casual talks (due to our use of singlish and mixing different languages together). Unless we meet some really high end people, then we'd greet appropriately.

There are many videos will say differently. And you must know China is huge, people speak Mandarin differently, it is actually impolite to say other teachers taught you wrong or don't say...XXX, especially in this case. It is absolutely correct to say "你叫什么" or “你叫什么名字” or even “尊姓大名”。 “怎么称呼” is a causal way to ask, more like you are order or in a higher position to ask the other. So, nothing wrong to ask what is your name with 请问, 你叫什么名字。 Just remember, one video doesn't represent all. watch more or listen to your teachers.
