Hey everyone! I've finally managed to get a microphone and I spent a few days tracking a Slipknot cover of a new song using this scream. I'm not gonna lie, I had to split it up into multiple sessions because this shit hurts, but it should be mixed and uploaded on KZbin sometimes this coming week. The fact that Corey Taylor screamed like this, for 90 minutes each show, every other day between the years 2000-3, and still be able to sing with such quality as a man in his 40s, is a testament to his constitution. Cocaine and alcohol are a powerhouse combo when it comes to things like this; it's terribly sad, but Corey was either too numb to feel himself tearing up his throat or didn't give a shit. The Iowa scream is actually insane. I spent my teenage years doing the same for Cobain's belt, particularly the In Utero stuff, and I mean, dude blew his voice out every other date on that tour, and I don't think he realized how much he had to work to reproduce what Albini caught in that vocal booth between his throat voice and how his voice dealt with him belting uncontrollably. By comparison, he tracked all of Nevermind chugging cough syrup and smoking cigarettes in the booth while he still had some range. I lost a decent amount of my top range in attempting to replicate it, just because Cobain had incredible vocal muscles and probable natural polyps, the harder he belted, the more the vocal push would grate against the nodes in his throat, hence why he was so raspy, partially why he spoke in a twisty monotone and why it's so hard to reproduce without just yelling the tune and blowing your voice out. Dude's range wasnt big, but his diaphragm was like a Mack truck. What does any of this have to do with Corey and Iowa? Well, Cobain was *singing* as such - I know he's classically trained and has been since his youth but even still I don't know how Corey Taylor's voice has held up as well as it has considering the sheer vocal shred he put his throat through during the Iowa cycle. Even Anselmo approached the Trendkill tour cycle with a little bit more subconscious preservation going on, and he was on heroin and still performing Cowboys *at the top of the show* at that point. Corey Taylor by comparison was soaking his vocal cords in shitloads of high alcohol content before going out and reproducing what he did on that record to the very last fry. Corey Taylor, his weapon of a diaphragm and his vocal cords are legitimately made from something different, anyone normally attempting to fry like that will fuck their vocal cords and their voice drastically, which is part of the reason I've always appreciated his gutterals - anything that doesn't fuck his voice and he's really good at doing is completely fine by me. This is why I appreciate Anselmo's crooning and slaughtered pig screams, 'cos it's not him belting at the same pitch as the entire Cowboys record and blowing his voice later in life
@Viper-dz2kw2 жыл бұрын
I’d bet cobain potentially had some blockages in his nose as well (there’s a whole story as to why that can affect vocals but it’s kinda gross) but I used to as well and had a similar reaction in my range to the way you described it, the louder I sang the more it distorted, but I could do it for hours because my vocal chords were just so fucked up from mucus leaking onto them from my sinus not being able to drain properly and that’s literally just how they resonated naturally

It’s good that some Slipknot songs have melodic choruses, my voice would always crack out when attempted. It was a good way to let myself know there’s something I’m doing wrong with my voice. Corey was able to pull off “Iowa” screams on the album with time gaps between each recording. Along with layers to add even more depth. He did eventually damage his voice. You can hear how damaged and different it sounds on Vol 3 and Stone Sour’s Come Whatever May. Luckily his voice has recovered great over years of learning and training.

I've been trying to tell people that same thing for like ever! I'm glad you made a vid about it. I too started screaming like Corey did and while it can sound amazing it is hell on the voice. you can tell by Vol. 3 he started incorporating a little more technique and by The Gray Chapter was almost fully using false cords for his screams. He just also adds his voice to it so it's not just that high pitched sound that using false cords produces. I figured it out eventually. Now I can go way longer than when I was only basically screaming as hard as I could. So basically if you're screaming top volume you're doing it wrong and messing up your voice. You're screaming should be anywhere from a loud whisper to slightly above speaking voice. Let the mic so a lot of the heavy lifting. Anyway, great video! I wish there were more like it!

Totally true. I used to do Slipknot covers all the time, but unfortunately I blew my voice out and lost more than just range. I even struggle with clean vocals now because I did permanent damage to my vocal chords. Don't be like me, find a voice coach or just skip the screaming.

Yup exactly right bud! I noticed back in the day when subliminal verses came out and his vocals sounded cooked! It took me a long time to be able to listen to his vocals after that but now i appreciate the music for what it is. Great scream btw!

Great video dude I always used to talk about this to metal vocalists and I'm a damn bass player haha. Frankie Palmeri from Emmure often tears his vocal chords because you can do that for an album recording but doing it on tour constantly is a different animal. Chester Bennington and Oli Sykes are 2 guys I can think of that also had to switch it up kinda like Corey had to. That's I think part of what makes those recordings so special.... it can't last forever or be forever recreated live safely, but those recordings will always document that sound.

Thank you! I've been saying this ever since I was like 17 and started getting into serious metal vocals (30 now) and the very reason why Corey sounds *so* uniquely aggressive and 'pained' is because he literally was - albeit numbed significantly by heavy alcohol usage. It's literally the sound of dried out (alcohol/cigarettes) vocal chords (GOOD ones) being abused out of energy and anger. If you've got the chords you might be able to pull it off for a year or two-maybe more if you're very lucky, but you *will* fuck up your vocal chords and no there is no way (known to man at least xD) to get that exact sound without harming your vocal chords. Him abusing his voice is what produces this sound and what makes it sound so good, unfortunately. That's why we should all cherish the earlier work of Slipknot because it's simply not wise to damage yourself like that. Corey kinda got lucky in that he can still sing like he does :p

This is an awesome video man. And I remember those days when Corey went through that, he sounded bad live for a couple years during and after the Subliminal Verses.

I'm pretty sure Corey also mentioned that he'd numb his vocal chords with lots of alcohol just to be able to keep doing it...so yeah very unsafe.

I got plenty of slipknot vocal covers here and I can tell you from experience that it's probably best not to shout that way. There have been instances were I have actually coughed up blood because of them and you can actually hear it in some of my covers, specially in scissors, the heretic anthem and metabolic.

I did the same. I had a lot of range. you're right. Its you're voice with a scream right behind it. I did that for years. And it got better. But then one day. You're in your car practicing some slipknot. And you get that tingle in your throat. And that was it for me. Started losing it after that.

I do false chord vocals as well, and I had a bit of a sore throat from cold air. My brother was telling me the Corey blew out his chords from screaming and that was what had happened to me. No matter how many times I told him, and my mother, that Corey doesn’t use false chords, the didn’t believe me. Now I have proof, thank you
