I remember the first time I heard .5, and Corey's new scream, I wasn't a huge fan. Now it's really grown on me, and I'm a bit older, and understand the strain put on his throat over the years. And it's happened with a lot of bands I love, who's voices just aren't the same cuz of years of abuse. Sometimes they come out sounding good with their technique, others not so much, but I the end I understand
@MatthewSparks2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there's a ton of variability on the sound you produce when your technique is harmful for you. Doing this sounds different regularly, and it sounds much different than it did years ago. Considering his age and how often they perform, Corey is sounding GREAT right now, in my opinion. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

@williamreynolds34872 жыл бұрын
At the end of the day, no one will ever know for sure because we haven’t stuck a camera down his throat. We can only speculate. I’d say, based on me trying to copy him, he went from false cord (Self Titled and Iowa) to a fully pitched scream (Vol. 3) back to false cord for the rest of them. I should add that the original false cord was not a very technically correct one (he added way to much of his real voice). I think what he’s doing now is much healthier. Edit: The way you describe doing the scream is actually how a lot of people teach false cord. Interesting.
@lifeunderthestarstv2 жыл бұрын
Very accurate. But he does inhale. People ignore this all the time. It's the same as detones. Falsetto inhales. Vol 3 he switched style and had a cold. Its horrid for a singer to emulate. Ahig he changed again. After that he quit smoking. (The difference heard between self titled and Iowa is because one is digital the other analog.)

Small correction: the distortion aspect of the Iowa scream is likely not false fold distortion; it is primarily breath distortion. This is also made by the false folds, but is distinct from a proper false fold distortion in that rather than using muscular control similar to throat singing, it instead uses excessive air to stimulate the false folds. False fold distortion is produced independent of the modal (speaking) register, which is why it is possible to perform both simultaneously. The issue with breath distortion + modal is that the requisite amount of flow for the distortion guarantees unsafely projected modal. It seems like most people hear screams and instinctively assume that they are produced with intense projection, air flow, and tension. What they end up doing is pushing their modal voice well beyond a healthy state until they achieve some sort of distortion. The popular conception of screaming is exactly the opposite of the safe way to do it. Learn an isolated false fold distortion first, and then intentionally add modal to it later, if desired. Small correction II: "fully pitched scream" is a perhaps a misnomer, depending on intended usage. In this context, a pitched scream is probably a combination technique using a voiced pitch and an unvoiced distortion. That distortion inherits an apparent pitch via resonant frequency of the vocal apparatus does not render it voiced. I use a bunch of uncertain wording throughout this because I have seen so many different usages of screaming terms, and most of them don't seem to be physiologically sound.

Corey said in a QnA that he changed his scream in Vol. 3 because he was newly sober and said "I'm constantly trying to change shit... It doesn't always work", and that the Vol 3. and mainly the Come What(ever) May scream hurt his voice too. You can also just tell because of how little he used it while touring.
@jamesstaggs41602 жыл бұрын
On Verses it did sound like he had alot of phlegm in his throat from smoking. Anecdotally it was much easier for me to do extreme vocal styles like a growl after I quit my two pack a day habit. By itself maybe smoking didn't change his voice but I don't see how you can be a smoker, do a ton of touring and doing his vocal style every show, drink and go through what had to be alot of stress and not have it affect your voice. Plus there's just age as well. Singers who don't do any of those things and that just perform regular music tend to wear their voices out over time. I don't know how Anselmo can still speak, let alone perform how he has throughout his life. If I had to guess the chnage was done to protect his vocal chords. The guttural stuff is tough on your voice and I imagine someone told him "if you wanna do this for the rest of your life you can't keep doing that".

@TheUnknownReject2 жыл бұрын
I agree with most of the things you said but I do think the AHIG scream and all that followed is pretty much the same scream from Iowa/99 just deeper or with varying degrees of distortion added. At least I can get that tone when I'm doing the scream but doing it deeper just takes out a lot of the distortion. I also do agree, that it's undeniable that he lost a LOT OF RANGE and still doesn't scream healthily. You can hear it in interviews a lot when his voice is tore up, but if you compare him now to even his talking voice in 99 or the chorus of me inside, it's so noticeable how much he lost. Even more so if you listen to the old 94-97 recordings of him and then listen to him trying to hit high notes on 2017s hydrograd. But he's still a marvel, when I'm doing that scream for too long I fairly quickly get hoarse and end up sounding like day of the gusano corey, which is why I think it's the same scream he just has some fucking stamina in that neck.

The biggest thing about Corey, is that he went even harder during live performances than in the studio. During the S/T and Iowa shows you can tell he’s yelling at the top of his lungs. Still, you are the only one on KZbin that is correct about this. I scream like this, it’s “incorrect” and you can and do hurt yourself (he did), but you cannot get it any other way, and nothing else matches the rawness of the results. Sounds brutal as fuck because it is brutal as fuck.
All hope is gone had the best screaming technique, very guttural and raspy

Can you do a deep drive on Chad Grey’s (Mudvayne) vocals. I feel like LD50 was equivalent to slipknot’s self titled album, where the true raw (and most likely incorrect way of) screaming was at its peak.. but then eoattc album to me.. was just a flop in terms of chad’s scream because that heavy guttural was absolutely gone - maybe one song (silenced) had some recognition of ld50 type screams.. but that’s it.. and then after that.. I didn’t even bother listening to any of their stuff.. now that they were back on tour for the first time in a long time.. people were excited and pumped.. but Chad sounded terrible on this last tour

How long did you practice before your voice broke?
@MatthewSparks2 жыл бұрын
It'll break at completely different intervals depending on whether I'm used to doing a lot of vocals around that time, if I warmed up, if I'm hydrated, etc. I've blown it out on the first or second takes a few times, but I've also done it for days and not had much fallout. But I pretty much ALWAYS feel some sort of repercussion from doing this scream, no matter what, even if it's just a minor increase in raspiness. Thanks for watching and for the comment!

Well obviously this guy knows what he is talking about and its nice to learn something about screaming from this dude. But I mean cmoon. Corey’s vol.3 scream sound like shit, and for me personally, that’s what I love about it. I know.. who am I to tell but just listen to The Nameless live version or any other song

i'm not a fan of spilknot i'm listening them a bit but i always knew he has shitty screams (by technique) only in like 2009 he was in his prime
