I wear ankle braces not because it's my choice as I hate them, but because I have to since my ankles aren't stable. I have double jointed ankles and I am really unstable and fall down a lot if walking without the braces. So unless there is the way to make the ankles stable as normal exercises sometimes are just not enough, I'm happy to wear them because I can even run that way and go for long walks without tripping over the floor. Without them I can barely walk normally and become tired really fast. Some people need to have that added stability. But for those with normal ankles, yeah, then probably it is harmful.

Yeah. I sprained my ankle BAD, and 4 months later (after some PT), I started running with a brace. And within a week of running with the brace, I had pain in my knee and lower back that I never had before. Took the brace off (running carefully) and no more knee/back pain.

I was told by my PT that I should wear braces when hiking because my ankle ligaments are so overstretched from past and recent injuries. Useful reminder, though, about being careful with the knees. I recently bought tri-lock braces which provide stability and yet have some flexibility to them, so not quite as restrictive as the lace up braces.

You gave a good argument for ankle rehab, though didn't mention arthritis. I've found that when I'm having a flareup in either ankle then activity is incredibly painful and the joints are weaker than when in remission. Flipside is that the flareup goes away more quickly if I continue normal activity or even increase activity. When I use ankle braces (and I've learned that if I brace one ankle then I need to brace both to avoid over-working the "good" one and finding that one flaring up as the other gets better), I'm more able to continue activity with less pain and am less likely to end up with a sprain in addition to the arthritis. I am not sure what the recommendation is when it's not an injury rehab issue but an arthritis/inflammation issue?

+Kristen Marie Please, watch the video and you will see why I am usually against the use of ankle braces. They tend to make the ankles weaker and weaker and they immobilize the ankle joint, which puts great stress on the knees and significantly increases the risk of a tear in the ACL or MCL knee ligaments.

Hi @Scott, thank you for your video and valuable information! It makes sense when we think the knee might be paying the price by having locked/compromised ankle movements. I was shopping for ankle braces for my soccer practices. It's very common during body contact to get hit on your ankle ball (or some other area around) by the opponent's cleats and it hurts bad. On some ankle braces I found side cushions that may assist on such hits. So my intention is to have my ankle fully operational, but with side protections against hits like that. Do you know any other protective gear I could shop for that will give me the protection without compromising my ankle movement? Thank you once again!

Hi Dr. Malin, I sprained my ankles (both of them) several times while playing soccer. Finally, I have decided to use braces to prevent the injury from happening again. I only wear them during the games, usually a couple of times a week for about 1.5 hours. I was interested to know whether you still discourage their use in this case. I understand the risk of shifting the wrong movements to the knees, but in terms of damage, that's far more serious, but in terms of chances, isn't that better? I mean, I am so afraid now to sprain my ankles that I am even considering quitting soccer. Thanks a lot.

I have been wearing the Ultra Breg braces on both ankles that allows up and down movement but little side to side movement, for about 12 years playing basketball. No issues in the knee and back. I sprained my ankle 10 times each time before the braces. I supinate (run on the outside of my feet) so the braces keep me from rolling. I also wear a custom orthodic to help me not supinate and keep the knee and back from locking up. It can work.

I use ankle braces because I have tendinitis in the inside of both feet and it helps my feet to not move. My ankles are fine though. What do you recommend for tendinitis? It's tends to act up whenever I walk around too much or do too much foot exercise. it's hard to explain where it hurts. It's the inner area of my feet so like the side of my foot that's closest to my big toe. That bone that protrudes (not the ankle) is the affected area. When the tendinitis acts up, it hurts to sickle my foot/roll it inwards

This makes a lot of sense. We rely so much on our muscle and tendon strength and when they're not performing as they should then they begin to atrophy (deteriorate). And one joint problem definitely causes joint problems further up the limb and into the back. It was described to me like this... Imagine you pull one thread in a tablecloth (or other material), when you look closely you can see the threads around the pulled area are also effected and it continues throughout the entire length of that pulled thread, all the way along it. And then those threads that have been pulled also pull on other threads around them. Our body is much the same, if you injure something it puts stress on other areas and if you don't build the strength back up in that spot then it's only going to create more problems further into your body. I'm speaking from personal experience here. My fibula (the small bone in the back of your calf muscle) was surgically removed some time ago. It took a lot of physiotherapy to get me walking again, but my ankle is still a weak joint without the 2nd bone holding it together, which means I have to continually work on maintaining the strength in the muscles to support it. I do have an orthopaedic brace that I wear on the odd day, when I've damaged things again, but only until the joint itself has rested enough that I can start to work the muscles and regain the needed strength. The knee and hip, of not only that leg but the other one as well, are effected by any weakness in the ankle joint. As long as I can keep mobile and maintain the strength in the muscles, then things are as good as they'll get. As Scott says in the video, in a normal sprained ankle injury ice and rest are the best treatments to begin with and then followed by exercise to rehab the injured muscles. There are always problems outside the norm, that require tailored treatment BUT strengthening exercises are STILL an important factor with any problem that involves a weakened joint or muscle/ligament injury. The more we rely on braces/tapes/crutches etc, the less the body will heal to full potential.

I tore a ligament when falling down the stairs at the weekend and my doctor told me to wear a brace for four weeks, so the ligament can heal properly. It restricts side-to-side movement but not up-and-down and since I put it on, walking is less painful. he also told me to rest this week, but start walking normally soon. is this a usage for a brace you would recommend? he said it's so i wouldn't put a strain on the other joints and on my back when i'd avoid putting weight on the ankle.

I've had my share of ankle sprains as I've done the whole don't use ice or ankle bracelet, as well as movement and stuff to stable your ankle and I still had knee injuries...I believe that your body needs its time to heal it self naturally by resting an doing gentle movements so your ankle could get motion and sensibility...without proper caring you can cause stress or injuries to other parts of your body...you don't necessarily need ice but there are other remedies both natural or scientific ways of rehabilitating...I try to take a natural approach by using an elastic ban and movement also I try to not to put much stress on it or another part of my body..I also massage it gently it works for me...I'm also a bit heavy set and is rare when I roll my ankle...how this help someone if you feel like you need to see a doc for precaution resons go ahead sometimes that helps too...remember not all ankle injuries are the same....you should be able to tell you body will tell you

So I have re occurring ankle sprains. I've been dealing with it for about 7 years now. I didn't tape it and only wore a brace for the times I was on crutches. I went to therapy and it helped with pain and my ankle did get a little stronger, but I would roll it all the time. Then I started tapping it during games and practices along with do my exercises from when I use to go to therapy. Now my ankle is so much stronger and didn't roll it until I stopped tapping it. I honestly believe it's a good idea to tape ankles as long as you're working it and doing therapy

I had an ankle injury at work 3 years ago and broke the inside and outside in which i had 2 surgeries for. They also had to remove some cartilage that was damaged. I went to PT until they said there was nothing more they can do for me, but my strength is not coming back and stooping and rotating on my ankle all day can leave me pretty sore when we finish. Probably a 6 or 7 on a scale to 10. My job is very physical, and requires repetitive stooping and rotating and carrying 75-90 lbs very quickly all day long. I was thinking of using something like this for work to relieve some weight and pressure on my ankle and possibly prevent me from rolling it in which I have done several times already. However I understand what you are saying about causing problems for the knee since rotating will transfer to the knee instead. Since a full recovery is non existent for me now 3 years later, you would still suggest not using this product?

This all makes sense, then again a lot of professional athletes use braces without experiencing worse issues then what they do without a brace. If you use it right and with slow training within specific ankle injury’s you should be fine long term. Just don’t rely on it. Use it more as a second support and slowly regain the strength you once had

I apparently have hyper-lax ligaments in my feet and ankles..arthritis is compounding the issue. I will use the brace only when stability is crucial and continue to work on my ankle and foot strength, range of motion, and flexibility. I am a farmer and need to avoid injuring the joint further and stabilizing my balance. Apparently muscle strength is all that's held my "bag-o-bones" feet together all these years...

I had "drop foot" for 10 months post surgery and then after almost two years I was able to play sports again. I still have some nerve damage in that foot/ankle area which makes my ankle very weak. However, in the initial visit I got 3 X-Rays and she told me she saw NO fractures. Therefore, I have signed up for your Rehab course. Would you suggest me to just keep doing the hydrotherapy and massage 3 times a day and try to do as many of the foot exercises as I can? What about using high-top shoes when skateboarding? I feel like high-top shoes don't restrict the ankle as much as a brace would (especially when the shoelaces aren't pulled to tight) but that they still give some level of support, such that they might be a nice "middle-way." I feel like it's probably good to have some ankle support If I'm doing higher impact stuff like jumping off stair sets and stuff. But then of course, there are always the problems you pointed out in the video. Do you have an opinion on how this would apply to skateboarding? Is it reasonable to look for a sort of "middle-way"? Thanks in advance!

How long after a grade two sprain do you recommend starting rehab. I'm about 2 months out with inner and outer ankle tearing as well as resprain a week after initial injury. I have continued swelling, tendon thickening across the front of my ankle and occasion outer instability still. I stretch and walk as normally as possible and stopped using most braces. I was using a light neoprene one for swelling compression that did not stop the joint from freely moving as its loose around the joint itself but firm above and below. (I sit at a desk all day so that helped a lot will the continued swelling.)

I like your thoughts on this subject ... makes sense but what about wearing an ankle support like A60 for running and sports until you fully strengthen your ankle with rehab ? Do you recommend that or it's better to not start sports until is fully recovered ? I just had a mild ankle sprain and I'm recovering from it with exercises but when I will start running I will want to use an ankle support for the first runs ... just to make sure I'm not hurting the ankle. After I will have a fully recovered ankle, I will removed it. What do you think ?

Hi, I had a lateral sprain on my right ankle last november but i wasn't able to rehab it properly in the first few weeks because it was injured a week before my inter-school games started and i went all out almost everyday for a month. The physio that attended to us would have a leuko tape around the front of my foot so that it will evert when I play. I also have a flat foot but I use in-soles and I wore a brace on my ankle everytime I played. 6 months passed (now) and I feel pain when I walk on the outer heel of my right ankle, the front joint, the bottom of the fibula and even on my shin(which feels very tight). The intensity of the pain and stiffness was still bearable until recently. I have stopped doing any sporting activity for about 1-2 weeks now and I do the RICE method along with wearing a brace whenever I have to go out or did any physical activity. I do not use any crutches. What is the best rehab method or exercises that I should do to reduce the pain and get back to my sport as soon as possible? And does applying heat onto the injured area help better than icing it?

thanks, that makes sense, my ankles have been doing fine without them so why risk injury, and I heard that if the ankle is too stable the knee would be the one to be doing the lateral movement, so I definately wouldn't that.

+Cameron Stewart That's exactly right... if the ankle is inhibited by an ankle brace and cannot move, the knee is out at serious risk for a tear.

+Scott Malin would the same apply for hiking boots? They are stiff and your ankles cant move as well as if you were wearing low shoes or keens. Just do your HEM video and no more hiking boots? If I kept up your exercises for the rest of my life would it prevent ankle injury hiking or would it be best when I get really old about 75 to wear hiking boots again ? Im 51 now with a rolled ankle and possible ligament break or tear. I was wearing keens because I dont like the restriction of hiking boots. Thank you.

Hi Scott I have on on going ankle injury after a nasty sprain 2 + years ago, seen a new podiatrist today, he says be because I have OA on the top of my foot from a chipped bone my body has changed the way I walk on my left foot and tried to take the pain away by walking on the outside of my foot which has caused a lot of pain on the outer edge and apparently my tendon up my instep and up the inside of my leg is "screaming". He has given me a brace to keep my ankle in the "correct place" which i should wear for 6 weeks and rest as much as I can. Can you advise please?

+ROSALIE HAYMON In cases like this, it is best to discuss with your doctor if ankle and calf rehab would help your condition. If so, then HEM would be very beneficial for you. But, please discuss with your doctor first.

What about using ankle braces for mountain biking, with fully healthy ankles, just to avoid sprained/broken ankles?

I sprained my ankle a few times during soccer like 5 years ago, and I have flare ups sometimes, triggered by workouts with a lot of walking/running. I want to continue doing workouts but I don't want to further injure my knee. Would it be beneficial to wear one only during my workouts? (And only in workouts when I am experiencing pain)

I’m a dancer and i have weak ankles so i got ankles support for Christmas, i get pain in my ankle sometimes so I don’t know if i should use it while the pain disappears (it always does but while i have it it doesn’t let me move properly) or while I’m at dance class or while i do my normal workout to prevent getting injured by that so i can give my 100% at dance

I broke my ankle 7 years ago and required a plate and screws to fix it. Over the years one of the screws has emerged a bit and rubs against shoes. I am required to wear shoes with ankle support at work, but this causes me pain and discomfort. Other than surgery to fix the screw what would you recommend for me?

I’m wondering what about recurring issues, I don’t know what triggers it but occasionally my ankle has issues to the point I’m limping around work and struggle to walk on anything other than a flat surface due to shooting paints, usually lasts a day or 2 before settling back down. When it’s that bad I feel my only option is to brace and immobilise it so I can continue to work

Dear Mr. Malin, I would like to ask you what do you think about wearing ankle braces only for matches? I play american football as runningback and I am very often hurt in area of ankle and I would like to protect it. I would use it only for matches no practice or daily wear... I would like to buy McDavid 195 ankle brace and I would use it for healthy ankle no for compensation or someting (I am resting for 3 weeks and using staffs). Thank you for your reply. Michal Poch

(I do skateboaring) I had an ankle injury when i was 17 years old, now i have 24 years old and i still have problems with my ankle, so i was thinking on using one to be able to skate and prevent some pain on it, but i found this video and i don't really know what to do now

I am 64 years old experiencing severe right ankle pain. I was born with a left clubfoot and me right ankle has been compensating for decades. My ortho person suggested I try a stiff brace. If this doesn't work, the maybe a mold specifically for the foot/ankle. What is your opinion and what stiff brace would you recommend. It is not a sports thing, but quality of later life issue. Thank You.

+Birney Brown For medical issues, it is always best to consult a doctor. Even though you have a severe sprain, you would still benefit from my system (H.E.M.)... If you find that your ankle is severely unstable, then a brace might be necessary. I would ask your doctor if rehab could help your foot get strong enough to withstand another injury and help get you out of pain.

So I ruptured a ligament on my foot one year ago. I hike very much and the worst pain was gone after a month or so. But it never really went back to normal. Sometimes I have pain only lying in bed and moving the foot somehow strange. And if I hit softly on a certain spot on the inner side of the ankle, it hurts like hell...but it won't hurt, when I walk normally. Does someone here have experience with that and what did you do against it? In fact I feel like my ankle brace gives me back much stability and helps me not to have pain in the foot...sometimes I wear it and sometimes not.
