When one leaves the country that one is from and settles down in another, what are the chances that they will move back to the country of origin to retire?
In this video, we will explore the question if overseas Malaysians would want to retire back in Malaysia. There are over 1 million Malaysians working and living overseas. Many Malaysians are still holding on to their Malaysian passports. There are also many Malaysians who are now citizens of other countries and no longer hold a Malaysian citizenship. So which is it? Watch the video to find out!
If you are new to this channel, we are Fran and John, the Corporate Breakout Couple. Fran is Malaysian and John is Singaporean. We broke out of the corporate rat race in Singapore and got ourselves financially independent in 2020. We love making KZbin videos on topics like financial independence, breaking out of the rat race, early retirement and lots more!
We hope you enjoy watching this video, and do let us know in the comment section if you like it!
With lots of love - Fran and John

So true about the "grass is greener over there" mentality. Sure salary is higher, but tax is high, cost of living is high and woke culture is rising. Malaysia, with all it's faults, still offers some semblance of balance that we all need as we aged. So glad I moved back to Malaysia after years in Australia. I’m a Malaysian living in Saudi Arabia. My husband works as an engineer here and for sure, we have always looked forward to the day we get to retire back in Malaysia. We only go overseas purely for earning money and would never consider changing our nationality or residency. Definitely Malaysia is where our heart is because no.1, the awesome people like our family and friends and the awesome community of diverse cultures like chinese, indians and other indigenous malaysians. No. 2, we love living in a muslim country whereby muslim communities are abundant so eating halal and going to the mosque is easy. No. 3, Malaysian weather is perfect whereby it’s cool in the morning and rains constantly. Yes it does get hot in the afternoon but not as hot as the middle east and electricity bills are not exorbitant. No. 4, cost of living is super affordable whereby basic necessities are controlled by the gov and eating out is cheap! I like gerai food more so yes the prices are amazing! No. 5, malaysia’s green jungle and pristine beaches. No. 6, Malaysia is a relatively safe and stable country. Despite it being multi-racial, people are friendly. I come from a neighbourhood in kl where we exchange food and plants with our chinese and indian neighbours.

Beware that you can lose your green card status if you leave the United States for more than one year without first applying for a re-entry permit (Form I-131). My brother had a green card. Came back to malaysia and raised a family in KL. It was too onerous to maintain his residency status in the US and had to eventually give up his green card.

@@kengmingong Nah, I rather have US citizenship and get a VISA to stay in Malaysia. In the current instability in South China Sea as well as Malaysian politics, It is good to be able to retreat to a safe country. Covid taught.us that you want to have citizenship in a country where you can feel safe. My whole family left in the 80s where Chinese have little opportunities to go to a local Uni and was part of the brain drain that left Malaysia for a better life in the US. But now that I have a good financial safety net, I can come back and live a comfortable life in Malaysia and can chabut the moment something goes sour (I've lived through 513). Social security income from the US alone puts me in the T20 segment getting more than I could stretch the dollar in the US. Without a US passport, you can always be rejected by US immigration. Imagine this scenario. War breaks out in in the region and malaysians want to flee (remember the Vietnam boat people)? With the massive exodus, US immgration may close the borders to Malaysian refugees. But they cannot deny you entry with your USA passport.

It’s good to hear a Malaysian trying to entice other Malaysians living overseas to come back to the country to retire. I believe that’s great for many reasons. You mentioned a few times in your presentation the MM2H long term residency. This program is meant,as I understand it,for many foreign nationalities, provided they qualified. The initial set up has been working extremely well, for the new comers and for the nation as it brought a lot of foreign currencies. However,COVID came and I believe that the program has changed and it is a lot more complex thus making it harder to qualify. Why change something that is not broken? Benefits were enjoyed on both sides of the fence. That’s my personal opinion, but leave myself open for correction.

Hello everyone. I am malaysian, went to study in Switzerland when i was 19, met my wife(swiss), work here, have 2 children, 32y n 31y and now 41 years later with 60 years old, its time to finalize our retirement. My wife and I are looking forward to our " retirement"/"adventure" settling down in Penang. We are planning to come back in the 1st quarter of 2025. All this needs lots of planning and preparations, and we started about 5-6 years ago. We are definately going to visit our children regularly and hope they too will visit us in Penang. We wish all malaysians planning to retire in Malaysia .....happy planning, look forward to it and im sure you will not regret this.Do not expect too much, just chill and enjoy the food and time at "home".

I left Malaysia 40 years ago, will visit Malaysia to enjoy the food & see old friends but never retire in Malaysia. Reasons, the racism & Malay nationalism using Islam as tool to beat down non Muslims have gone from bad to worse. Non Malays are badly treated by the police, uniforms & uninformed government servants. Politicians have encouraged Malay to dislike the non Malays as adversary. 99.8 % police & enforcement officers & gomen servants are malay & the law always favours the Malays.

People don't understand that the prices of things are never going back down. This inflation is deeper than we think. Those buying groceries are well aware that the real inflation is much over 10%. The government never change forever, the media fully controlled by government, harsh laws to prevent people or opposition political activities. Cost of living and inflation so high.
