That’s because she might’ve projected her voice too much. Actors and actresses are naturally taught to basically yell at every word they say, as ‘too quiet’ might lead to the audience not hearing anything they say. This might’ve lead to her small aggression.

Well Julie Andrews Belted in this song too, just not the whole time like Carrie. I think what everyone means is that she does it too aggressively. She's not voice acting, she's just singing, because her voice isn't trained to do musical theater like Julie Andrew's voice is. I think she does great in the parts where's she's meant to belt, but belting the entire song isn't the way it's me at to be sung. That's why people think it sounds off. And Carrie is also singing live and she's been trained to belt when she sings live, she's never done live musical theater especially something that's so particular to the way characters are supposed to sound. So I understand why people think it doesn't sound as good, because she doesn't but that's not necessarily a terribly bad thing, it's just that Julie Andrews clearly embodied the character better than Carrie cuz she's more experienced in this field.

Except for Lonely Goatherd, right? Both Julie Andrews and Mary Martin got enthusiastically loud as the song went on. It actually showed off Martin's vocal ability, as she was usually very timid in her singing and barely sustained notes for a period of time.

This is amazing but they are far too American and it's very shouty. Also the tempo is a bit faster than the original and she didn't hold the the notes for long enough some times. E.g. it's ment to be 'Laaa a note to follow sooo' but she sang it as 'la a note to follow so' and did similar with the rest of that verse when the notes are supposed to be help, which made it sound a bit choppy. But the staging of it all is good and I really enjoyed the acting, it's very impressive.

Two veteran actress were mentioned to do Maria part instead of Carrie, but producers never had a though to call them. Carrie was the producers main choice, once they had the go from NBC. Carrie sorta opens her mouth in a way that’s mainly used by singers like Kelly Clarkson or Jenifer Hudson. When Carrie says her lines are all in a American accent. She needs to learn how to switch up her style of singing if she wants to be on broadway. Sierra’s voice fits the musical’s she is put in. Not saying the Carrie’s voice is not good but I don’t think it is fitting for this musical. But Sierra is trained in Opera and Musical Theater.

I dont understand the criticism. Of course she is not Julie Andrew's. When she won idol she wasn't yet a famous singer or actress. I watched it and think she was great. So many mean jealous people. Not an easy part to play and perform live.

The children are very good, Carrie seems highly stressed and guarded like you might actually be on a first day at work in a new environment, but more than that she’s just a bit too tough and hard. It looks too rehearsed and not spontaneous or joyous enough. Maria was just a big, loving, naive kid herself with a bursting heart which is why the Mother Abbess sent her out into the world to work with children, knowing she’d be a happy, blooming, loving force in this sad, dysfunctional family. They’d all learn from each other. In this song she forgets she’s teaching, at which she’s a natural, and just bonds and has fun with the children, who instantly love her. You really need a more classical soprano or musicals performer to get this genre right. Still, it never fails to entertain however they cast this.

For those hating on Carrie, why not try to perform this and post on KZbin? We'll see if you have the right to trash Carrie. I'll wait... Until then, your opinions are nothing but hate messages. To Carrie, I hope she knows that, even though acting is not her cup of tea, but it will never diminish the fact that she's a brilliant and amazing singer/songwriter, and currently the Country Music's reigning queen. They trash her in favor of Anne Hattaway, but her single Oscars will never trample Carrie's seven Grammys, including the very rare Best New Artist. Way to go, Carrie!
