Tony Parkes calls Ted Sannella's square dance, Do-si-do and Face the Sides, at the Dare To Be Square weekend held November 18-20, 2011, at the John C. Campbell Folk School, Brasstown, NC.
The tune is "Ragtime Annie," which Tony said is his favorite square dance tune. Musicians are Steve Hickman and Jim Morrison, fiddles; Claudio Buchwald, piano; Sam Bartlett, banjo.
The dance, written in 1953, is published in Ted's book, Balance and Swing. Viewers can also find another recording of this dance here:
• Square dance - Do-si-d...
The weekend was sponsored by the Folk School and by Country Dance and Song Society. It brought six well-known callers and 70 square dance enthusiasts together to explore many different styles of squares, including both traditional and modern. The organizers will post additional video clips-- watch this space!-- as well as make audio clips and a syllabus available.
This video posting is part of the Square Dance History Project. More information about us can be found here: www.SquareDance...
Recorded 18 November 2011 by John-Michael Seng-Wheeler and David Millstone

Lots of smiles here. Fairly simple choreography, but he keeps everybody moving. It will look complicated to a novice, but you learn it bit by bit in a class and have just as much fun in the class as at the hoedowns later. You can see the basic movement are pretty simple, arm turns, swings and walking forward. Ladies like a man who asks them to a dance and every lady is beautiful when she is smiling.

Great to hear a full square dance band. I call dances using guitar and drums which allows total flexibility. Always good to dance to live music! That dance flows nicely too.😄🎸🎵🧑‍🤝‍🧑👭👫👬🎤

When I was at primary school (6{or7} until 11 I think) we would do this together every spring, but it was not something that was continuously happening in senior school (11-16 years old) but I have done it again many times over on different occasions through university as well as returning to the same place in Wales after a friend was lost and we were remembering him with love and laughter and obviously a do-si-do your partner 🕺🏽

Used to do this a lot at earlier age. This style is more relaxed and less confusing to the newcomer. If they did this style they should be pretty confident in an evening. Charley V it's great fun! Kids love it and there are youth competitions they can get into if they really like it. Check around of Facebook to see if there are square dance clubs in your area. They're usually free or extremely low cost (maybe $5 at the door & bring a snack to share if you're so inclined). This is how I found my current square dance club and we have made many good friends and had so many enjoyable times dancing together. Our club has lots of people in all age groups except teens and I hope we can recruit more young people because there is so little healthy recreation in our area that isn't costly. I see your comment is from 3 years ago but if you haven't begun yet then start now. I'm sure your kids will love it! Best wishes
