I remember the days when we went down to the hardware store to buy sandpaper (the orange sort) and Ados contact 'cement' to 'griptape' our newly made ply mini boards (circa 75/ 76!). We eventually realized that the wet and dry sandpaper (dark grey/black) was better. Tinsnips blunted on these and fathers throughout the land -when fathers all had garage workshops and actually made things by hand - bemoaned their skater kids invasion of their domain! I remember unpacking my tiny board from my school bag and skating furiously around the lino floor of the prefab classroom when the teacher left for five minutes to check on another room! My favorite trick was to place the board on my desk and drop down to the floor. The class would go into hysterics and there would be a mad rush to our desks 1/2 a minute before the teacher got back! The teacher never found out. My board was never confiscated until highschool the next year!

I tried rubber grip tape, it works and saves shoes. My conclusion is I don’t really need the front foot dragging resistance from the grip tape, I only needed grip for the back foot/popping foot. So when I pop, my pop foot won’t slide away. The sliding foot doesn’t really need that drag resistance. The only grip needed is at the bottom of the shoes contacting the board

i did this ages ago, skated for an entire day at a skatepark without grip, transitions and all, it was a frustrating day, but i gotta say, i think it really helped me, theres small changes you have to make to skate without grip tape, shifting your weight perfectly becomes far more important, being more accurate with your footing becomes extremely essential, and it forces you to have to be far more accurate with flip tricks. everything requires more accuracy with weight shift, footing and balance. i gotta say, if you havent tried this before, DO IT! i really feel like it helped my skill level when i did it, switching back to grip, some tricks felt easier, or at least, they felt like they required less energy, or less trying, hard to explain...but, this is a great exercise to try in my opinion, if you can get over the frustration of it, and i hope for all of you thats the case, as that will make you better. great stuff johnny, i love your dang content, by the way, your an inspiration to this 39 year old coming back to skating.

Seeing all of your Marnas fall out of that box gave me so much pleasure lolol. I'm on my 7th or 8th pair. Never going back.

Small tip for video here: if you want to improve your audio on a budget buy a wireless transmitter lav mic, I use a Boya By Wm5 that costs like 80$ or so and it works with DSLR cameras, mirrorless and you can also connect the receiver to your phone as well and the sound quality is amazing for the money 😀

If anyone is interested, I extrapolated the amount of shoes in the 1 box to 5 boxes and got about 70 pairs of shoes ripped.
