I think tampons aren't too painful unless they are put in at the wrong angle. Diva cups are more painful. I remember the first time trying the cup, two days in I had to switch to pads because I was sore from the cup.

I am 28 and have tried using a tampon maybe 5 times throughout my life. I hated it every time. When I was younger my friends told me, maybe I have to wait till I've had sex. But it hasn't really gotten better. The last time I've tried it it was ok going in, cause I had heavy flow and it felt only a bit uncomfortable having it inside, but it hurt a lot getting it back out. I just don't like them. I have always worn pads. I get that it is less socially acceptable but I don't care. I am feeling less confident about asking an other girl for a pad than if I'd be asking her for a tampon, but that is not enough reason for me to go through that torture. Everyone's different. I just can't stand it :)
@leahhooper67907 жыл бұрын
I agree! Sometimes when girls at school ask me for a tampon and I instead offer a pad they give me dirty looks, or straight up say they don't use them cause they think they're disgusting. Sad we still have to deal with things like this. Girls should be supporting each other no matter what.
@kaitlinralph50777 жыл бұрын
Really? I didn't know it was a thing that pads were socially unacceptable. I actually use both tampons and a pad at the same time to prevent bleeding through. Anyone that looks down on a woman for wearing a pad is crazy because I'd much rather that then ruining another pair of underwear.

So I got my period when I was 12 and I’m 13 now. At first I used pads but I don’t like how they feel like I’m wearing a diaper so I switched to tampons last month and putting it in, it hurt so bad and it felt like I couldn’t walk. I used small ones because I have a light flow but it still hurt and yeah

you have perfect timing with this video because I just got my period over a week early and consequently destroyed my panties. ugh. super glad it's Saturday and I was only chilling on my couch and not at work or something... Also, I'm 29, and I still don't like tampons much. it's a thing of personal preferences, just use whatever is most comfortable or convenient for you! :)
@heath39897 жыл бұрын
Honestly I prefer tampons and if you want to wear them don't be scared to, you can't even feel them if you put them up right and you will only ever bleed through if you wear them too long or if you are a heavy bleeder and get the wrong ones. :P

As I'm probably older then most viewers (in my mid twenties) I wish someone had given me the option of a menstrual cup a lot sooner. It has changed my relationship with my period entirely which like you said- acceptance is important. and even though I'm sitting here with a hot water bottle to help battle the cramps i feel a lot more comfortable with my what my body can do then i ever have before. I think its great that you take the time to talk about these things with your young viewers, it makes all the difference.

I've been given advice on sticking with pads or trying tampons, etc. from my mom, but, y'know, moms have to tell you to do what's comfortable. Everyone else I've talked to has been pushy about it and it means a lot coming from you, as someone I look up to, that it's best to do what makes you comfortable. Also, it's great that you aren't afraid to talk about things like this! It makes me feel comfortable and safe, and I'm sure many others, too. Keep up the amazing videos!

Helpful hint to anyone bleeding through... I found myself that I had a heavier period than most and used to only use pads. What would happen is that I would be sitting in a class or lecture for an hour or so and then when I stand up i have that "oh shit" moment where I can feel that I've bleed through. Now I use both tampons (super for when i do have a heavier period) and I wear a pad as well because more often then not a little bit gets past the tampon. Now I don't have the problem of bleeding through because the tampon catches the most of it and the pad is an extra layer of protection.

If anyone got worried when Cat said that birth control (the ones with hormones or copper, not condoms & stuff like that) makes you infertile - it's only when you take/use them. When you stop taking/using them, you should be fertile again once your body's hormones and stuff like that have balanced out again, which could take a few months. Btw; awesome video Cat! =)))

a tip for putting in a tampon, is leaning back while you’re sitting down. it causes your legs to spread wider, allowing the tampon to enter your vagina with ease. it will make it less painful or almost painless, basically.

I have to add that tampons can hurt if your vagina is dry which usually only happens when you change tampons and the tampon has soaked up all the moistness as well as the blood. This happens to me when my period is ending and my flow is lighter. Otherwise they really shouldn't hurt, plus you're in control of how you insert it, so do what's most comfortable.

Okay this video is sooo important, and honestly, I loveeee talking about my period, especially with guys cause the reactions are priceless. And it's totally my favourite subject to talk about from a feminist view, cause all the taboo and lack of knowledge due to only women (people with uterus, but majority are women) having it. I mean if it were a thing men had, oh we'd know all about it. Anyway can I just say how much I hate scented pads? Like for a while I couldn't find non-scented nightpads and I hated it. Also, I'm so mad that tampons literally can be toxic, it's not enough that everyone with a functioning uterus already has to deal with blood and most probably period cramps, we can also die thanks to using tampons. And now to my period woho, but seriously, I'm on the pill cause I have so much period cramps, I also have prescription pain killers aaand this pills that makes the heavy flow lighter so that I don't bleed as much as I would otherwise. Gotta love having a uterus.. But still, this video is sososo important, and it shows that we have to be even more open with this kind of stuff.

The first time I actually used a tampon (and last) I couldn't get it out, and I ended up sitting in a bathtub for hours crying because it hurt so much everytime I tried to get it out. Eventually my mom was like "look I need to go to work we're either getting this out now or going to the emergency room", and she bent me over and ripped it out and I have never been in so much pain as I had been there. I'm on my period right now and I'm 13. I first got my period when I was 10 in fourth grade and I remember first wearing a tampon because I was going swimming. My older sister was trying to help me through the locked bathroom door, but I didn't quite understand her, so I had to look up tons of visual tutorials on how to put one in on my mini iPad, and at first it hurt so I had to slowly but firmly push it deeply inside me. It was gross because meanwhile I was getting blood on my fingers and I felt weird walking afterwards, I felt the need to like penguin waddle but I soon got over it. I swam happily with my tampon for a good two hours until I remember that my sister told me to take it out every now and then because I could get like you said, shocks and infections so when I went to change, it was so difficult to get out. I guess it was really soaked with blood and water and it hurt even more trying to get it out than trying to put it in. Again, I had to slowly but firmly pull it out and when I did I felt so relieved that it didn't get stuck. When I put a new tampon in, it was much easier (feels weird to say but there was now enough room to put the tampon in since it uh, "stretched"). I only wear tampons when I need to go swimming now. Pads help me more and I feel fine, but in conclusion awesome video I enjoyed it greatly. This is the first video I have watched of yours and I'm going to subscribe 👍 If you are still reading this hi 💩

as a biologist, you've not quite explained what the pill does. While I'm glad you're creating an open discussion about a difficult topic, it makes me a little uncomfortable about the misinformation
@kiat55387 жыл бұрын
Hi Cat, I'm so happy you're always so brave and forward with the topics of your videos! This is something I wish I could have talked to someone when I was young and got my period. For the sake of being as accurate as possible, I'd like to add to the first question about birth control/the pill! There are many forms of birth control (= preventing pregnancy), one of which is the pill. It works either by 1) stopping ovulation, eg the releasing of an egg, so fertilization can't happen or in some cases by 2) changing the lining in the uterus so the egg can't cling on - or the egg won't be "implanted". More on Planned Parenthood's website: www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/birth-control/birth-control-pill What you said about the pill helping with periods is spot on! With me, it also helped with acne and period pains.

fertility tracking devices can be used to monitor your fertility throughout your cycle. Some are also supposedly now as effective as birth control methods offered by your doctor if you abstain from sex on the high risk days (e.g. the lady comp device). so they could be used both to prevent pregnancy and to increase the chance of a succesful planned pregnancy. I've never used one personally so please do your own research though! There's always a risk of pregnancy from any contraceptive method.
@chloecarroll26857 жыл бұрын
People can definitely die from TSS. Its basically a huge infection and some people are not able to recover if they don't seek medical care early on. Its a pretty scary situation, I go for a menstrual cup for the convenience of a tampon with the safety of a pad lol. Also birth control doesnt make your eggs infertile, it makes you infertile (if that makes sense.) The hormones in birth control prevent ovulation, thicken the mucus in the cervix, and thins the uterine lining so it is hard for an egg to stick and be fertilized. Our bodies only have a certain number of eggs, we dont produce any more (unlike sperm which are constantly being reproduced) Making all of our eggs infertile would consist of chemically killing all eggs, preventing pregnancy indefinitely, rather than causing other processes in the reproductive system that decrease the likelyhood of fertilization.

I wore pads for like first months, I constantly blead through my pants, and sleeping was just a litteral bloodbath bc the pad would never stay in the right place as I move so much when sleeping, haha! 😰 then I tried tampons and never looked back! I rarely bleed through (maybe if I forget and leave it in too long on a heavy day but never in general) it's so much more comfortable bc you literally can't feel it at all if you put it in right, it does take a little bit of practice in the beginning to get it right, but other than that tampons are my best friend when on my period! :P but really, it's up to you to decide what you like and feel most comfortable with, pads or tampons, it's just a thing to stop blood from going everywhere so whatever gets you through that time, I'd say is great! 😂👍
@leahhooper67907 жыл бұрын
That's too bad you had such a bad experience with pads. :( I only had trouble the first six months or so. But I got on a cycle and learned what size pads to wear depending on the day and I haven't had a problem since. But everyone's bodies and periods are different so I understand.

Safe as in for not bleeding through or anything? Because tampons, like Cat said, can have health consequences. But, yeah, I understand easier. Hopefully, I'll work up the courage to try them again one day. Right now though I don't find pads to be a hassle at all. But that's just me. :)

Leah Hooper yeah as in not bleeding through! yeah I know, you have to be aware of the risks, but I think that as long as you're aware of the symptoms you should be fine! and I've used tampons for years and never had a problem, so I hope it'll stay that way :P.. nah, I mean if you're comfortable with pads that's just as good, I'd say it's just a preference thing and really, it's for soaking up blood so, whatever each person feel most comfortable with is just fine :)

Totally! It's good that you're aware. A lot of people aren't and it leads to some insensitivity toward pad users. That's why I love videos like Cat's-stuff that addresses periods as "not a big deal" and "not gross" really help people to support each other more.
