Pete became a Met hero (2019) prior to Cohen purchasing team (post 2020 season). David Stearns just finished his first year and isn't going to put his reputation on the line with a risky contract built on the past. This will be a pure business deal with no sentimental bonus. Boras gambles with the middle because he's totally banking with the studs. No skin off his back, but Pete got screwed not taking the bird in hand because there nothing now in the bush. MetsD Up, you guys are nailing it. Take a 3 year with an option after 1. As long has he has value, he will get 20-30 past the 3 year window and still make bank.

I think the Met's are just playing this the way they played Nimmo. The Mets have players on their team that are worth more to the Mets than they are worth to any other team. Pete, as time is proving is worth significantly more to the Mets especially after 1) being incredibly inconsistent for the last year and a half 2) having a QA attached to him and 3) not really being elite at anything aside from beating the piss out of the ball when he makes contact. Pete played the Conforto game and like Conforto he didn't preform at the level he had to preform to get the money that he believes he's worth. 120/4 I bet is where it's going to be around. The Mets aren't dropping Alonso to DH after one year. He's the best scooper in the majors and has a ton of range; he's an above average fielder where it matters. They're also not guaranteed to win Vlad in free agency, nor will they be spending 500+ on himn a season after dropping 800m on Soto.

If this was Pete 3 years ago, I’d say yes, sign him for whatever he wants. Last 2 years he was not the player that deserves even 3 years 90 million contract. Let him go to San Francisco.
@dashx11032 күн бұрын
That’s part of the problem, though. Three years ago, Pete wasn’t eligible for free agency. He toiled for the Mets while being barred from the so-called “free market.” Now that he finally can enter free agency, fans want to discard him. After he hit 53 HRs as a rookie, establishing himself as the best HR hitter in the NL, did he get a contact comenserate with his performance? Heck no. He made less than $1 mil the following season. Now, he finally hits free agency, and fans want to kick him to the curb. I hate the pay structure of baseball. It penalizes good players who excel early and it largely rewards the billionaire owners. Pay Pete. Give him the 4th year and the extra $30 mil. It’s good both ways. And it’s the right thing to do.

Unfortunately, for Pete’s case, players get awarded with new contracts by “what have you done for me lately?”. Look at his numbers. They’re worse than the players signed for 3 years $60 million. I think everyone's thoughts are focused on next year when it comes to Pete. It's quite possible the thinking is more long term (we have Soto for 15 years) It just makes more sense to have Vlad here. Trade this year and look to sign him or wait for free agency. If Uncle Steve wants him he will get him. Stearns has talked about how at sometime you need to find out about your young guys. It just might be that way for first, second and third base this year.

They overpaid for Soto. Now they are worried about money ?
@MizzAnthrope2 күн бұрын
Yes, they overpaid for Soto. But Soto is 26 years old, in the prime of his career, and probably has the best eye in the game. It's not about money with Soto, but the brand. The Mets want to build around Soto and have him be one of the faces of the franchise for Cohen's plan to build up Willets Point. There's a reason why Pete's market is shit. Pete is a one-dimensional player, and GM's know it. He hits for power -that's it. He doesn't hit for average, and he's not a high on base guy like Soto. He also strikes out 180 times a season and grounds into a ton of double plays; especially with the bases loaded. He's coming off two consecutive down years. He can't expect to get the contract he's asking for after the next best guy in Christian Walker signed for 3/$60M. Teoscar Hernandez is two years older and a better hitter than Pete. He signed for 3/$66M. Pete needs to wake up and re-evaluate who he takes advice from, because this is all on him.

@@Metro-vq3zl I’m not “skewing” anything. The claim that Pete’s offered contract would make him the “highest paid” 1b is simply wrong. Freeman’s guaranteed $162 mil is much better than a guaranteed $90 mil. It just is. The issue of whether Pete should take the offer is a different matter. The issue of whether Pete deserves more is a different matter. We can reasonably discuss those things. But pretending the Mets offered to make Pete the highest paid 1b is just, frankly, dishonest. An aside: I constantly shake my head over fans complaining about player “greed” and agent “greed.” It’s never about owner “greed.” The absolute richest people in the discussion are never branded with the “greed” label. RE: Conforto. Agree that early on he was an asset to the Mets. But for the last 2.5 years of his tenure, the ability to get 'clutch" hits was woefully inadequate. Like many Mets of days gone by, the star was bright until it wasn't. The main problem with stats, even today's over amped useless crap, is that, unless you dig deep, you can't know whether they were homers or ribbis to put you up 6 instead of 3 (not so big a deal) or singles and doubles that scored tying or go ahead runs late in a game(a big deal). I personally think Pete can return to form if he just goes back to enjoying the game and leaves the money to take care of itself. If you can't get by on 22 M /yr. for doing something you love for 3/4 of a year, then go drive a truck for a few years. You'll feel better about yourself.
@johnstrawb352111 сағат бұрын
@stephanieluigon5192 There's no evidence that 'clutch' in baseball exists. Please cite even one study showing that it does. The main problem for proponents of clutch is that in the overall the performance curves for players in clutch situations is the same as in non-clutch situations, and is no different than random distributions. Take World Series PAs, a small sample size compared to a career's worth of PAs. At random, if you set up the parameters consistent with each player's regular season performance and simply rolled dice to generate results (K, BB, 1B, 2B... etc), you'd end up with a few guys with OPS's around 1.200 and a few guys with OPS's around .300, but with most guys fairly close to their reg season performances. Fans would celebrate the 1.200 guys and think of the .300 guys as chokers, but none of it would be true. Take Reggie Jackson, 'Mr. October,' lauded as the 20th century's greatest clutch performer. And yet in 11 ALCS Reggie's OPS was an abysmal .679. In short, in 2/3 of his postseason series, Reggie hit like a bad SS. Or take Bryce Harper---in his lone WS he put up a modest .760 OPS compared to his lifetime OPS of .911. With everything on the line, where did the Clutch go? In truth it probably, it almost certainly doesn't exist. *TL,DR---Baseball, in the end, is a campfire around which we make up stories to explain what are fundamentally random events occurring within the parameters of existing talent levels.* By the way, if some day ever-advancing research shows us that clutchiness does indeed exist---that there are players who can turn it on at key moments but, despite all the incentives for turning on their talent in all situations which in the contemporary game could easily sum to a hundred million dollars in increased salaries such players do not do so---Brandon Nimmo is the likeliest candidate to be such a player, where he hits 14% better for his career in High Leverage situations than he does at all other times. Even the great Eddie Murray only hit around 7% better in High Leverage situations. Why don't Mets fans know this about Nimmo?

The best lineup for now & the future and still have flexibility positionally and financially is signing Bregman and Santander along with lengthening the lineup. Bregman fixes 3B defense this season and is clutch and always performs in the playoffs but he also is the only player in FA that is a fail safe if the young kids don’t pop this year in Acuna and Jett but it also would allow the Mets to move off of McNeil and Marte for bullpen or SP. If Mets offered Santander 3/75 with an opt out after 1 he can up his value for next FA where his market will go up simply because there will be more players around his production and above it. When judging the FA market people have to look at the current FA’s and the following years on which positions will go up in price and next year the OF market and depth of talent is incredible compared to this FA. For example next year OF market will be Tucker, Schwarber, O’Neil, Gurriel Jr, Robert Jr, and would be Santander if he takes a 3 year with an opt out after 1 year or takes a 1 year deal ( which I don’t think he does ).

I think the question is whether the Mets want him. He’s been a great player for the Mets during a time when he was locked out of the marketplace. Now that he finally hits free agency, it only makes sense that he wants to maximize his value. I’d like to see the richest billionaire owner in sports step up and sign/reward Pete. It’s good for the player, the team, and the fans. It should happen.
@dashx11032 күн бұрын
@@user-tw1kc2qh1wHe broke the major league record for HRs by a rookie and established himself as the best HR hitter in the NL. And for that he was rewarded with a salary of less than $700,000. He is just now finally hitting free agency, and he wants to maximize his value … and fans claim the problem is his “ego” and his “greed.” It is amazing to me, and sad, that people have been so conditioned to side with the billionaires anytime there is a player/team dispute. smfh It’s why they always win.

Good question. I'm a bit dismayed by how Stearns has handled this situation. If you didn't think Pete was the best 1B/middle order power option, then you should have made a move with one of the dozen other options when you had the opportunity . Likewise, if you do believe he's the player you want, I think you have to go out and get him. Not to say 7 years, but to offer 3 and hope the market allows that instead of offering 4 yrs with an option or 5 to just get it done - this isn't the last bat on your bench like with JD last year- this is your cleanup hitter! I don't understand how you jump for Montas early in the offseason but haven't shown that kind of decisive action since (other than Soto). This ambivalence is just not good.

I don't believe the Mets prefer Alonso, they only want him if they can get him on a more fair deal. I don't blame them though Alonso is for the most part a one dimensional unclutch goofy and a narcissist who thinks he's worth much more than he is. I do not blame the Mets for preferring other options available this year or even next or for not offering Alonso a contract that will be untradeable.

Been saying the same guys 3-90 get Pete to 7-200 any way to slice it. Something isn’t making sense here. Max im ok with is 5-125. But if im Pete im taking 3-90 and hit at citi with Soto in this lineup and do what Soto did but after last year he probably doesn’t wanna do that again and he knows vlady is coming. It’s all a mess. The 7 years was before vlady. Now vlady is a FA soon it’s 3. Writing is on the wall

Not sure but I read somewhere there was opt outs after the first and second year. It would make sense that Pete would turn it down if those were club option opt-outs, which would essentially mean he's getting a 1 year 30 year deal because you know the team will opt out after the first year for vlad jr.

I'm tired of hearing ignorant comments like yours it just shows how unintelligent people are when it comes to these things everyone thinks oh just take it it's alot of money when yes it is to us but not the players comparatively speaking so it's not all cut and dry like everyone thinks or assumes so I say to everyone making these flat out stupid comments exercise some common sense before speaking/typing. And I'll let you in on a little secret Pete DOES want to be a Met otherwise he would have taken an offer any offer from another team already so again common sense.

@Mets'd Up Podcast 3/90m for Alonso? PETE Alonso??? Of course not. Stearns isn't an idiot. The Mets rate to do as well if not better in 2025 just by moving Vientos to 1B and handing 3B to Mauricio with (gulp) Baty as the backup plan there---fangraphs has Baty projected in 2025 for what looks like an optimistic 1.8 fWAR but he wasn't actually... well... horrible in 2024, with surprisingly competent defense at third, modest improvement at the plate, and either 0.3 bWAR or 0.5 fWAR in about 30% of a season. In short, the media wouldn't be pretty, but even if Baty is no better in 2025 than in 2024 he'd put up 1.5 to 2.0 fWAR in 2025. A weak but not a ridiculously poor bat particularly if you shelter him from LHP, with average defense at the hot corner. 3/90m for Alonso is so utterly ridiculous in this context that IF true it had to have been Cohen interceding. There's not a chance in the world Stearns, or ANY above average GM / PBOP would offer a 30-year old R-R 1Bman already in steep decline a 30m AAV, let alone 3/90m with opt-outs that limit the (unlikely) upside for the team but stick you with him in the far more likely event that he continues to decline and hangs around at 30m for another season of sub-2 WAR production. CONTEXT IS EVERYTHING: Say you can pick up a fraction of a win in 2025 by moving Vientos to the easier defensive position that is 1B, and where he has played competently in half a season in pro ball. Say his projection therefore moves from 2.6 WAR to 3.0 WAR. Say, also, that Baty at 3B puts up his projected 1.8 WAR. Between the two their total WAR sums to 4.8 WAR in 2025---not bad for about $2m. BUT, instead, say the Mets bring back Pete at the rumored 3/90m and he gives them the fangraph's projected 2.4 fWAR at 1B to go with Vientos' 2.6 fWAR at 3B. *_Overall the Mets are adding, get this, just 0.2 WAR for $30 million._* ----That's sheer, unadulterated lunacy. The Mets can also fall back on Mauricio at 3B, or even make him their starting 3B with Baty as the backup plan. The Mets can also bring back Iglesias or any other solid backup IFer with a 3Bman's arm, such that even if their production at 3B only sums to 1.0 WAR in total in 2025, they'll still only be picking up 1 WAR in the overall for $30 million by bringing Pete "Kingman" Alonso and continuing to suffer Vientos' glove at 3B. Some of this is entirely simple: The Mets already have a useful floor under 3B. Signing Pete doesn't give them Pete's production against 0.0 WAR, it gives them Pete's production against a floor close to 2.0 WAR and probably 1.0 WAR at worst, AND it costs them roughly half a win by keeping Vientos' glove at 3B rather than moving him to 1B. You have to put in the work on the predictable fates of 30 yo R-R 1Bmen already in the process of falling off a cliff, where for the entire expansion era the number of such 1Bmen warranting a 3/90m contract in the dollars of their era is probably no more than a dozen players----IN 63 YEARS. There's nothing about Pete to date that suggests he's an exception to the rule of continuing stark decline.

Boras/Alonso have overplayed their hand ..... 3 years/$90M is a fair value for Pete. Frankly, I am disappointed over the way this whole hot stove process has gone for the Mets .... What exactly has Sterns done? Soto is all Cohen. Love bringing Manaea back but the rest of the signings have been trash (just like last year with signing Short, Wendell, Diekman, Ottavino, Jorge López, Tonkin, Ramirez and trading for Houser) ..... with Sterns, there are more misses than hits (Iglesias, Taylor). There has to be something here we are all missing. Could it be that the Mets really don't want Alonso clogging up 1B because they will make an all out assault on signing Vlad Jr. next year? Sure seems like it. It's also odd to me that Sterns who has a reputation for liking to make trades, has only traded for Siri and is still holding onto all these "prospects" which appear to have declining value. OF for example ..... Nimmo is a lock in LF, Soto is a lock in RF ..... I can see Acuna as a potential CF'er but where are Gilbert and Clifford going to play? Jett Williams at 2B? Not while McNeil is here. I could go on and on. Finally, what is up with Iglesias and Winker? Both provided a great deal of inspiration and heart into the 2024 Mets and they appear to be getting the 1986 Ray Knight treatment ..... the value that both of these guys bring goes far beyond their salary. Rant over.

Agreed. All it takes is one stupid team- which is why I think Stearns has dropped the ball here. If he wasn't willing to go to 5 or even 4 for Pete, he should have jumped on one of the other options. Instead, he let them all slip off the board and is trying to JD Martinez Pete, who's a much better hitter at this point.

@@eyesontheinsides I guess we need to see how it plays out to judge that. I think fans tend to get impatient and forget that it’s still December. There is plenty of free agency left.
