Drew Gilbert is vastly underrated. Way better than Clifford. Has a quick bat. Swing reminds me of Soto. They had him go launch angle and pull. That’s why the average and on base was down.

Hate the signing. --It blocks the best avenue for Acuna-Mauricio-Baty to establish themselves, ie at 3B. --It keeps Vientos at 3B, wherre he's overmatched rather than at 1B where he rates to be league average. --It cements in place the worst corner IF defense in MLB for the next 1-2 years. Doubles heaven for opps. --It buys two more years of Alono's already steep decline. Will he improve? Maybe, but probably not. Betting on a 30 yo to improve is a bad bet, and if he just gives us 2024 again, it's not enough. --It spends a 27m or 30m AAV for no increase in the Mets team win projection, money that could have been spent on an ace or a very, very good #2 starter. Everyone wants to play the kids---until it's time to play the kids, then they chicken out. This is Cohen overruling Stearns. We're going to start hearing word of friction between the two. Stearns didn't sign a 5-year contract to run the Mets only to be overruled by Cohen on major moves, and we saw how poorly things went in 2021, 2022, and 2023 when Cohen did exactly that, when he made major moves that sank the team two years out of three, and even the fate of the 2022 team was written in the moves he made, putting together the oldest team in baseball that flagged and collapsed just short of the finish line.
@MetsdUp6 сағат бұрын
Think there are some ways around these problems, if they are problems - If Vientos can't play 3B, he'll move to DH and Baty/Mauricio will get a shot - Maybe Vientos improves a lot at 3B, but who knows - A 'steep decline' for Alonso probably still guarantees something like 65 HR and a near .800 OPS for the next two seasons, then that's that - What #2 starter could that have bought? The market said Flaherty was less trustworthy than Alonso. Should we have given 30 year old Fried with a forearm strain nine years? Burnes was never realistic. This pitching market didn't have that guy for us - Stearns was upfront he didn't want Pete for many years, think this is probably more money than he wanted to pay him but it undoubtedly makes the team better for this season. Would be shocked if they have friction at this point, seems they're still lockstep

I was a McNeil hater for most of last season but hes so due. He raked after the all star break so if he can stay healthy a McNeil bounce back season is inevitable. And Nimmo can go back to being an on-base machine. Lineup has plenty of pop. Offseason was an absolute gem by Stearns. Everybody stays in their lane and we demolish. Best possible spot for the young guys too. Especially with Peña coming up and Lindor running the show our infield is about to be an all star factory. Pitching lab is already crazy. Wouldn't be surprised if Manaea and Montas both have career years. Senga is going to be good if he stays healthy and gets good volume. Have inning eaters for days. We're starting to become a well-oiled machine. Good luck to the other guys for real. This is what we've been waiting for boys. LFGM.
@johnstrawb35212 күн бұрын
It really isn't. The farm isn't even in the top half of MLB. There are no Corbin Carroll-like prospects in the minors. The Mets just blocked the one clear avenue to playing time in 2025 for their good young players. Even if Senga is healthy the Mets have all of one postseason-caliber starter and instead of using the money going to Alonso and Montas ($47m in 2025!!) for one or even two such starting pitchers the Mets added an unnecessary old, bad defensive 1Bman in steep decline and a reclamation project on the mound. Grade: awful.
@Trottah2 күн бұрын
I don’t think Cohen wants to carry a $300+ MM payroll into perpetuity. He desperately wants the farm system to fill these holes, whether that’s Mauricio or Acuna in the infield, Jett or Gilbert in CF, but especially Clifford at 1st. We’ll see how they all progress this year, but if we see real success I’m not sure if Vlad is where Stearns will want to go.

LGM!!!! Polar Bear Pete is baaaaack! This team is way better this year! IMHO the Mets is short 1 starter away to run away with this. Not a particularly an ACE but 1 that’s gives the Mets great outings maybe a 2nd best starter to an ACE, all though I would prefer an ACE, but the Mets can wait till midseason trade? Cease makes perfect sense now that Pete’s back! Also I would give Sproats a chance on the 6th starter maybe a high end low cost probability… I believe the Mets look like they want to start a 6 man rotation?!? It would makes great sense… It would give the starters less innings with better rested Arms?! Especially for the 1st half by salvaging their arms’ add experience against batters during 1st half and change some pitch combinations get a better 2nd half of the season! IMHO….
@dashx11032 күн бұрын
So glad Pete is back. I think this rounds out the lineup so well. I'm enthused about this team. How good can they be? I think it really comes down to how well Stearns' gambles on the rotation pan out. If we get a repeat of '24 with starters ... this team can do some damage.
@billywright82522 күн бұрын
Amazin' news! Frankly, I think if you got Stearns' honest opinion he'd say they overpaid for Pete, and I think after the beating they took at Amazin' Day Cohen finally told Stearns to just get 'er done.

I wonder how Alonso feels in his heart of hearts? Didn't he have like a 150 million dollar deal on the table about a year ago that he passed up. Baseball is crazy, had he had a better year offensively, he probably would have gotten what he wanted.
@dashx11032 күн бұрын
And he might still make out okay. That contract he turned down covered his last season of arbitration, 2024, so he has already made over $20 mil in arbitration for that first year of what would have been the contract he turned down. Now he gets $30 mil in '25. So he's at $50 mil over 2 years. IF (and it is a big IF) Pete has a big season in '25 it isn't that difficult to see him getting a multi-year contract worth $100 mil. Say 5 years at $20 mil/per. That would get him right back to exactly what he turned down. So, I guess we got to see how this all pans out. I think Blake Snell's contract last year is instructive here. Everyone dumped on him for "only" taking a two-year deal with an opt out. He got $31 mil in year one, then opted out and got a 5 year contract with the Dodgers. For those six seasons, he is banking $213 mil. It worked out great for him. But many arm-chair GMs in '23 insisted that Snell was stupid to take that short-term high-AAV deal instead of securing something like a four or five year deal at a lower AAV. Snell took his chances, and he made out great. Will Pete? Depends on Pete and upon how he performs. But right now he is the highest paid 1b in MLB for the '25 season, and he'll have a chance to test FA again next year. A lot can change. If Pete sh!ts the bed in '25 and can't get a good contract ... oh, yeah, he'll forever lament having turned down that 7/158 deal that was available to him a year and a half ago.
@Diddy_baby_oil992 күн бұрын
@@dashx1103you are correct. If Pete plays well this year, he could very well come out ahead of where he would’ve been if he accepted that 7/158 contract in 2023. After 2025, he’s already earned over $50M of that plus whatever he makes for the rest of his career, which could easily be the 110M he would need to be ahead of that 158 offer. Like you said, it all comes down to how well he performs. I think simply hitting 35/90 will keep him earning good money. Hopefully he does much better than that, but that will for sure mean he will be opting out after this year.

@Dan-tt8sn if he has a year that is about his career averages of about .250/ .340/ .510 with 35 homers and 100 rbis i think he gets his 100+ mil in free agency at age 31. His averages have just been down the last 2 years, in particular his batting average. Hard to forget his .217 career low 2 years ago when he comes back and gives u .240 with less homers and less slugging. Really rooting for dude tho, im a yankees fan and i have been following his career closely cuz of his link to Judge.
@Diddy_baby_oil992 күн бұрын
@@felixnunez1 hopefully he has a strong year. His average per 162 games is actually 43 home runs, but he’s not even close to the player Judge is. To sum up this tragic saga, the POLAR BEAR was ambushed by TRICKY STINGY STEARNS, FREACKING COHEN and the biggest baseball leach in history. END RESULT: PETE gets signed for peanuts compared to the rest of the high profile free agents. If he has a bad first half of the 2025 season, STINGY STEARNS has an excuse to trade him for a pair of minor leaguers and he finally gets rid of PETE once and for all. FINALLY, PETE' will be paid with the petty cash from COHEN'S personal piggy bank.

This signing helps the lineup in many ways. As you note, it certainly takes some power pressure off of Vientos, Winker, and Marte. I think also down the order it takes some pressure off of guys like McNeil and Alvarez, from whom I'm expecting a bounce-back season (25+ HRs). If nothing else, it certainly elongates the lineup. Can't wait for the season to start. Fingers crossed that the starting pitching comes through.
