This is why more people eventually knew this show as "Urkel" than as "Family Matters." 😂 And then he did that great cameo on Step By Step where he did this dance again, doing crossover cameos before crossovers were a thing. This episode basically got me over my fear of going to school dances and inspired me to start learning how to dance. Dancing became a passion and a talent I didn't even know I had. I saw Steve Urkel do the Urkel Dance on Step by Step before I started watching Family Matters. There was a Family Matters episode that ended with Steve taking off through the Winslow roof with his jet pack. The Season 1 episode 2 of Step by Step began with all of the Fosters and Lamberts in their backyard having a family barbecue when Steve Urkel crash landed in their backyard with his jet pack.

Because he had 15 minutes of fame and than tripped over something the next day and was a pariah again. But remember he was smart enough to find his cool gene and multiply it 100 times to turn him into Stefan- impress Laura and win her, afterwards when her sensibilities changed and she saw what Steve was like she chose Steve. He was after all a generous gentle genius. And he had essentially battered down Laura’s defensives and was friend zoned by her intentionally. Unrequited love for so very long.

I mean it does happen..... For example: I was one of 4 black kids at my school and there was this group of 6 kids that teased me constantly. At my school during black history month all the students would get a different black person they had to research and do a speech as if we're them, Dressed up and everything. One black history month i dressed as martin luther king JR and for the whole day they treated me like we were the closest friends. We played together and ate lunch together. It was great. And then the next day they went right back to teasing and bullying me like the day before never happened.i never knew why lol and it was weird because they would have moments of being really sweet.i got stung by a bee (which im allergic to) and they all went after the bee while one of the girls walked with me tonthe nurse as another ran ahead to alert the nurse that we were coming. Same with twisting my ankle, one of the boys gave me a piggy back ride to the nurse or that they were the ones who defended me from teachers who tried to stop me from praying over my own food lol They were my bullies yet they were always doing stuff like that too. Plus they loved my mom. By highschool we were cool though 😄

The Urkel Dance was a novelty dance that originated in the season 2 episode, "Life of the Party". It was based around the character of Steve Urkel and essentially incorporated movements that made the dancer's posture more like his. The dance was popular enough to appear on another show, Step by Step, when the Steve Urkel character appeared in a crossover in the season one episode, "The Dance". Jaleel White also performed the song, in character as Steve Urkel, on the 5th Annual American Comedy Awards. Bea Arthur (from Maude & The Golden Girls) joined him on stage to "Do The Urkel", after which she said, "Hey, MC Hammer, try and touch that!" A promotional cassette single of the song that accompanies the dance was produced and distributed in limited numbers. A T-shirt was also produced featuring lyrics and Urkel's likeness. Rick Sanchez pays some form of homage to The Urkel Dance with "The Rick Dance" in the Rick and Morty episode "Ricksy Business".

When the show began there was no Urkel and it had a set in concept. Then suddenly someone who isn’t even apart of the original cast starts taking everyone else’s screen time, so much so that a couple of initial castmembers get snuffed out of the series. Never mind that Jaleel was apparently difficult to work with and was well aware that he was the “star”. I definitely understand where the resentment came from, whether it helped the ratings or not.
