It's so funny seeing Danny NOT pick up on who Hua Cheng is because I thought it was so obvious after reading the novels but like the connection is actually so crazy to make when you aren't reading all the extra details from the novel. I think they really needed some sort of narrator, or for Xie Lian to have more of an internal monologue, for this pacing to work in the donghua. Sooo many of the details are missing, which is to be expected, but it's to the extent that it's hard for people new to the series to follow the plot, which is unfortunate. I wouldn't say TGCF is the easiest novel to get into as a western reader, mostly because of all the Chinese names and titles. But at least you know what they're trying to present to you in important scenes. I NEED this guy to read it some day so he can get the full experience, and hopefully watching the donghua will give him enough familiarity with the names to have a better start on the novel. 😭

Stuff happens blah blah blah and in the end XL decides to make him like some sort of Xianle style longevity locket using the metal from the mask he used when he was state preceptor of Yongan. In the end something about his blood being mixed in with the mask happened and made XL’s heart ache every time he thought of HC and so HC destroyed it. But Hua Cheng did get another gift from XL (a belt he wove)

These two seasons just cover 1 and a half book out of eight. There's so much more to all these characters. As a book series, heaven official's blessing is absolutely amazing and its sad that the donghua will probably never cover it all

oh my gawd, the blood rain was the blood of those green troll things. the heaven’s general was like « go, I’ll deal with them », and Hua Chen goes « yeah, heaven’s not that efficient », and then kills ALL of the trolls in 3 seconds, making their blood reain from the sky.

You would like Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation better. A lot more happens and it's more action-focused. The animation is a matter of taste, but I like it. It feels more 90s-ish than what's coming out of Japan these days and I'm a sucker for 90s anime. Also, a ton of "zombies". Regarding your comments on Qi-Rong: If I could make winged green eyeliner instantly appear whenever I wanted to, I totally would, so I see where he's coming from. Btw, if you're basing your judgment of Hua Cheng being evil off the fact that he's a ghost, gods and ghosts aren't aligned with good and evil like that. Qi Rong is just Qi Rong. He's evil, but that's a him thing, not a ghost thing. Ghosts can be good and gods can be evil. Being a god or a ghost is a morally neutral state of being, from what I can tell.

Danny, the whole entire next season is a major flashback that is INSANELY important to the plot. And it develops Qi Rong, Mu Qing and Feng Xins relationship with Xie Lian. Spoiler: we also get little Hua Cheng but we don’t officially know that it’s Hua Cheng until like season 6 (but it’s obvious anyways)

Also, the blood rain is from him killing all the demons that were helping Qi Rong with... his dinner. His comment is about how heaven is inefficient before the blood rain is him being like, heaven would have taken too long to round up all the demons, so he just destroyed it for them

As stupidly straightforward as it may sound, my solution to remembering names in mxtx's works was writing them down as soon as they came up along with some short description to identify who they belonged to (like Qi Rong could be: the dude who got souped; Xie Lian's cousin). Then, as the story went on, and the characters gained more names and aliases I'd put them in one place. I know it sounds tedious af, and it kinda was, but it was either this or being super confused all the time, like Danny seems to be. Tho ngl, keeping up with chinese names through hearing insted of reading seems so much worse, so rip Danny.

I do love the slow build, it starts building up beginnings to some amazing mysteries and conflicts. God Heaven Official's Blessing is my favorite book, I want to talk so much about it, but I'm glad you did enjoy the second season. If you are confused about anything things do get explained again later or just in more details. Just know that the third season, whenever it happens, will definitely switch gears again

If you have the space for another reaction series, Mo Dao Zu Shi /Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation is REALLY good and in my opinion has better action and character relations than TGCF. The animation style is BEAUTIFUL and music is enchanting with such a good cultural rich environment. There not being an english dub may be off putting but it is still 110% a worthy watch.
