Thanks so much for all the details and going straight to the point. Valuable information. Would it be easier and cheaper to take a coach from airport to downtown Tokyo? It'll probably take slightly longer but at least you don't have to change trains, yes??
@DiscoveringJapan12 ай бұрын
It depends on which airport your arriving at and where in Tokyo you're trying to go. Narita has straight-shot express trains going directly into Tokyo. Haneda is significantly closer to Tokyo and has minimal train changes. Bus is also an easy, no-stress option. Either is good, but if you're concerned about getting confused by the train lines on your first day, a coach bus may be a better option for you.

Thank you so much for this video. Really helpful as I am planning my first visit to Japan. Also, I am looking for a piece of advice about visible tattoos as I have both my arms and legs fully tattooed. Any information or advice you could share about this? Thanks!
@DiscoveringJapan110 ай бұрын
Glad it helped. As far as your tattoos, generally, it's not a big deal for foreigners to be tattooed. Just be aware that there are some places that you will not be allowed, such as private onsens and possibly some smaller businesses. I'm also tattooed and have never had a problem. If you are interested in visiting onsens, there are several that allow tattoos. Public baths are almost always accepting to tattoos. If something like this is not on your list of things to do, I highly recommend it.. you'll likely find other tattooed people, and some of them with some of the most beautiful tattoos you'll ever see.

I would not worry about translation. Really, the main thing you need is a Suica card and a metro train map. Suica can be obtained at the airport and download the map to your phone. Obviously online maps like Google are handy. That's really it. English signs are everywhere, and Japan functions just like any modern western nation.
@DiscoveringJapan111 ай бұрын
Your comment is mostly true if you stick within touristy areas. However, many people like to get out of the city to experience the REAL Japan. For this, you'll either need to know some Japanese or use a translator app.
@halbailman11 ай бұрын
@DiscoveringJapan1 Being realistic, most people to Japan the first time will stick to the traditional big city locations. I've been 6 times and not yet strayed to "real" Japan. Although, one day I hope to!

18:43 you arrived to the new platform 01, to get the new train. But how do you know which side of the platform is the correct one, there's indications there? Also I saw you took the blue train is this also a indication of the correct train? Thank you
@DiscoveringJapan111 ай бұрын
Good Questions! Google Maps is pretty good about telling you which platform to get on the train (the platforms are numbered). Don't go by the train colors! Also check label on the side of the train to be sure it's your train before your board. Don't overthink it. Thousands of tourists do it everyday. You'll probably fumble a couple of times, but that's part of the adventure. You'll have the hang of it in no time and be fine.

How are you being charged on IC cards when moving within a city? IC card is charged based on which station you started and which station was your final one, no matter how many changes you made and how long it took for you? Is it better then to buy unlimited ride day tickets, like Tokyo Metro 24-hour Ticket ?

Thank you for this very useful information! I bought my JR pass 7 days. If I use it to take JR lines to go to Tokyo from the airport, on the day of my arrival, that day will be considered as the first day of using my pass? I only intend to go to Kyoto on the fifth day afterwards. It is better to use a SUICA card to get around the first days in Tokyo, right?
@DiscoveringJapan1 Жыл бұрын
Get a Pasmo/Suica at the airport and use that first. Go to another JR station to make your JR pass reservations. DO NOT try to make them at the airport. The line is VERY long and you can't make advance reservations there anyway.

I saw on google maps Ikegami Line Plarform 1/2... do you know what is 1/2? This means I can use either platform 1 and 2?
@DiscoveringJapan111 ай бұрын
Another good question... The train platforms usually have 2 sides; i.e. platform 1 & 2 (1/2). The train could arrive on either. For example, Google Maps may say your train departs at 13 :27 on platforms 1/2. When you get to platforms 1 & 2, check the overhead sign that's constantly updating and it will tell you with certainty which track/platform (1 or 2) you need to board on. Hope this helps. As I said in the video, if you miss your train, another will arrive shortly. --- unless your out in the country side somewhere, but those typically only have 1 or 2 platforms anyway. Don't sweat it, you'll be fine. When I first came to Japan, there was no such thing as Google Maps - haha When do you plan to visit?
