So sorry. I lost my last guinea girl 2 weeks ago. She was 6 1/2. Her companion lived to 5 1,/2. Not fair these precious souls live such short lives. They are amazing!

I am so sorry for your loss. If it helps any I will relate my loss too. We lost our good buddy this last summer, big George. He was just shy of six years old. Our other piggies are wonderful (six and counting) but for some reason this guy had an extra magnetism about him. Everyone loved him. He was never aggressive and never nipped another piggy or human. However, when George was around 8 months old he was taken into protective custody. He was neglected so bad that when he was found he was covered in feces and urine. His fur had to be shaved off. He survived and was nurtured back to life. I adopted him shortly after and the rest is history. We give our little buddies the best care we can. I rest easier in that, hopefully, he was given the best chance at life that we could give him. After we got him I would like to think that George had a good life. Sounds like Freddie did too other wise you wouldn't have taken the time to write about him. A toast to Freddie

Very helpful, thanks Sarah. As you know, my 4 girls are all seniors. Pecan was 6 in August, Pansy 6 in September and Hazel and Truffle are five and a half now. I definitely tend to follow them with hay as they often like to have hay in their beds so they don’t have to bother getting up. They also prefer to be together with their friends in hideys- safer when you’re older and perhaps feel a little more vulnerable.Definitely much less eating at night now than when they were all younger too. However, the trust they have built in knowing you for so long as their caring hooman is so lovely. 🥰 They are all such wonderful souls aren’t they? xx

Brilliant video, very informative, I have 2 rescue piggies, and we can only guess their ages, Suki is probably around 4and a half to 5 years and Claude is 3 to 4 years. I can tell that Suki is winding down now as he sleeps lots and doesn't get out of his bed until his morning veggies arrive, on the flip side of this, he will do zoomies like a madman in the evening. Claude is younger, but was kept in a small cage and never given floor time, so he is only just beginning to do short bursts of zoomies as his back legs are weak, he has improved so much since we adopeted him in January this year. Bum baths are a regular thing for Suki as his fur tends to get a bit yellow with wee, he is white and ginger. And Claude has a " frilly willy " which needs regular cleaning. But all in all, they are happy , active boys and my love for them is immense. ❤

When my last guinea pig turned five, I had to saw off a piece of the litter box in her cage so she could get inside without any problems. On a daily basis, my guinea pigs had a large cage and a large corner in the room, they were kept free range. However, Kalinka, the last pig, had trouble getting in, so this had to be remedied. Of my ten guinea pigs, five have reached senior age. When they turned five years old, changes in their behavior were visible - they were slower and slept more.

I currently have three over 5 years old. They do use their ramps less or not at all, and do sleep more, and are generally more friendly and relaxed. I like your syringe game! I do two things that are similar. 1) Mix some Critical Care or EmerAid and let them have some voluntarily from the syringe from time to time 2) Almost all piggies enjoy what I call "The Hay Game". Hold long strands of hay over them, holding one end of it, and the other end at the level of their face. They will pull down on it while eating. Continue holding the hay, lowering your hand as they eat it and its gets shorter. They love this interaction, and its especially useful to acclimate new residents to the idea that you are a friend, and your hand over their body isn't something to fear. Works really well to calm down skittish new arrivals.

Watching this a bit late. Our late Maplecoco, (We call her Maples) She, had a somewhat sad life. We got her from a Guinea pig show, where her ear was tagged. We brought her home and at that time, I’m ashamed to say, we put her in a really small cage with two other piggies. We didn’t know better, we thought it was fine. Well after our first piggy marvel died, we got a new, (much better!) cage. Soon after, cotton died too. Poor Maples, was alone. For a few years, she was incredibly depressed. She just sat there, for hours. We then got her a friend, Emma. Maples was about 4 years old. Emma, was unhealthy when we got her, and died a few months after we got her. Maples was again alone for 2 years. Then she gained another friend. Flouncy. She, is still alive to this day, and they were great friends despite the massive age difference. One day, maples was laying upside down. RIP. I think maples was happy at the end, for a bit there she had really long nails but they were trimmed before the end. She had really bad cataracts but still lived alright at the end. Now flouncy, who has been alone for a few months, (if in the Lords will) will not be a maples story. We might get her a new friend really soon! Flouncy is 2 and a half years old, so hopefully not too bad of an age gap.

I love your videos very much and because of your candid information about piggy care, my piggies often want to stay with us up to a ripe age of 7 years or more. Our vet often jokes about our piggies not wanting to leave our hotel because the food and service is too good.

Everyone should take lessons from you, Sarah. You did such an awesome job with your baby guinea pigs, teenage guinea pigs and elder pig guinea pigs. They are blessed to have you. You should really become an exotic vet is a great job and are so loved by them. I know you adore them too, thank you for all the education you give us your amazing and I think that if I ever got another guinea pig, even though I’m a little too old for that now, I would be listening to you much more frequently even though I so enjoy hearing all the different things that you have to say❤. I have a 4 1/2 year old girl. She needs weekly baths because she has a big lump under her chin (the vet dont want to remove it, to close to trachea and other), she has it now for 2 years and it never bothered her but now she cant clean herself anymore poor girl but she loves all the extra attention she has now :D

Loved the video. I'm still undecided about introducing new piggies to my two- my older lady has a weakened immune system so we have to consider her wellbeing, as she can pick things up even if other piggies have been isolated and are healthy. We've recently switched to the new piggie parcels pellets, and she seems to be moving easier and zooming more. They contain urinary and joint supplements and I think they are helping.

I give vit c in the drinking water on the advice of pets shop. Benji is either 1 or 2 years old. The petshop were unsure as he was takin in as the owner could no longer care for him . He gets herbs and veg spaced through the day along with pellets and the mix stuff and hay of course, have tried him on plain filtered water but he won't drink it. Any advice welcome.He is used to the slightly flavoured vit c in it. Also his poops are a bit soft so I cut out the veg and then after a few days it turned dry so gave a few bits of veg. It's gone soft again. I got some charcoal but am unsure if I should use it and when.

Thank you Sarah for such an informative video and one that is also preventive too! How fast time seems to go by and doing all I can do for my Harriet and Clementine to stay as healthy through their golden years. My girls are in a 2X4 with a good size loft and go up and down and Harriet has even bypassed the ramps and jumped up to the loft and down from the loft. They stay active and I love to modify and sometimes I take the loft off. The veggies, I wasn't aware of and thank you for that!

Unlimited hay, an occasional one or two peaflakes (not too much at once) and a variety of veggies is good. Strawberries are quite sugary so limit to a small piece once or twice a week. Red peppers are great for vitamin C so no supplements required. You could introduce some other veggies into her diet so she has a great variety, but older pigs can have sensitive tummies, so everything in moderation and anything new she hasn't tried before take it slow and build it up gradually. 🥰

Bless him, do you know how he has lost his sight? Sometimes cataracts can form quickly through diabetes, in which case you would need to be careful with sugar levels in his diet. Piggies are known to cope very well without their vision, it sounds like you're doing a great job helping him adapt ❤️

So it might seem like it is but it isn’t ok to have them on their own. If you don’t want to have guinea pigs for a long time then I recommend adopting one that is the same or similar age. But if you want to have guinea pigs for a long time then get a young one to bond with. Just so you know there are a lot of resources on this!! 😊😄 hope you and your piggie have a good day! 🎉🎉 and that you find your pig a friend.
