Just starting out with my bookbinding/book repair channel, filmed a bunch of vids with no real strategy. Legitimately thanks to @ChannelMakers advice, I've started scripting things out, reframed to a closer shot of me (easier to see on mobile/autoplay), holding up the beaten up old book within the first 15 seconds and posing a question about it. Not edited those yet, so we'll see if it works!

This is worth studying. I’m annoyed by constant jump cuts and fast talk and drama-face thumbnails. They seem to work well for the young TikTok style. I watch hours of conversations with authors, artists , journalists. And listen to original music on smaller channels. I should really say “listen”. I can’t be the only one. We ought to keep in mind that lots of people have disabilities- affecting cognition, hearing, sight. English might not be their first language.

This is a GREAT quesiton. Always always consider your target audience. If you're creating videos for 50 year olds it SHOULD feel different than one for 15 year olds. With that being said, there are some stand alone things that are always great to mention quickly. One of them being, tell the audience what they are going to get from watching your video. Make sure they know that they're not watching in vain. This will be worth their time. You don't need to scream at them like you might see Mr Beast do. But its human nature to not want to waste our time, and if you can assure to the audience you won't waste theirs, you'll have them hooked.

I don't really like the idea of watching a channel that was created by a company instead of an individual. For me, the wonderful thing about KZbin is that it's a place where normal people can have find an audience without just relying on the gate keepers of normal the media and entertainment industry players. I thought Channel Makers was Nate's channel, I didn't know he was a hired creator. It seems a lot less real and authentic knowing that. I will probably just move on and watch his new channel. This isn't a knock against you 2 or anyone else there but I don't like the model that your company is using.

Great idea, we could describe how you want your retention graph to look like a hockey stick with the upturn coming as soon as possible. We noticed that videos with bigger reach ended up having a bigger drop off leading up to the 30 second mark than videos with less views. I imagine that is because they are views coming from loyal subscribers that always watch your videos all the way through. But as you get suggested to a bigger audience there tends to be worse retentions rates as they are testing the videos with a bigger audience. You'll notice the graph gets a bigger bend as the video ages and you get more views so I didn't find the graphs to be a clear indication of what concepts increased retention but it was interesting to see where viewers were being lost.

I really miss Nate! I’m glad he started his own channel. I honestly thought this was his channel until 2 weeks ago but no he pretty much built up this channel and did the work for a company which I feel was pretty deceiving. When I watch KZbin I like to see actual content creators/owners rather than a corporate type channel. Nate really created this channel and he should get a lot more credit for all of the work he has done building your channel. With that being said, this new video was very awkward for me to watch. First of all, I don’t feel a connection with the hosts. I don’t know anything about them or their credentials. Second, I felt like I was eavesdropping on a conversation they were having about KZbin and I wasn’t included in the conversation. There was 0 connection with the audience. They also look and sound awkward throughout the video, like they feel unnatural and uncomfortable being on video. There’s no chemistry and they looked at each other while talking and didn’t focus on drawing the audience in. I would also like to see more energy. It just seemed dull and like a boring, corporate-like video. I’m sure things will get better over time but this was my first impression. I wish your channel the best of luck as you get through this transition period.

I could just throw a dislike and be done with it, but that wouldn't be fair so I'll provide some feedback for you guys since you've alredy made 3 videos "post-Nate" but I can, personally, already see a big difference on the approach to your content. And since you guys are trying to re-hook the audience Nate left behind, I only think it is fair to do so. First of all, Nate was a very huge and big part of why people subbed to your channel, obviously myself included. Let's not pretend otherwise. With his charisma he attracted the audience that is here now. But also, and this I won't attribute to only Nate himself, since you guys discovered that there was a team behind the scenes involved, the videos with him felt like they were about us, the creators. They were aimed to provide value to the audience. The creators, thus the audience, felt like the central piece. And in practice the videos felt FAIR in terms of title -> content. Since then I feel like you guys shifted, because in your last 3 videos I felt clickbaited, although with this one it was different and its something about personal and subjective taste. What I mean by that is that I'm sick and tired of the "DO THIS" formula. Like, please, dont hide it in the title and just tell me WHAT IT ACTUALLY IS in the title. Personally I'm not sure if that strategy still works at all. At least not with me. Just for seeing the "DO THIS" in the title I was about to skip the video, on principle, but I chose to give you a chance guys. And in regard the other 2 videos you did, it felt like the most absolute clickbait I have ever witnessed on this channel, which was never the case. Your "first" video, titled "What do you do when KZbin is hard", I expected it to be about mental health and well-being, something that Nate has alredy made a video about. But instead your video is actually is an apology video all about yourself. You dont give any useful info FOR US until like the minute 7 or so. And the second video , "The #1 Cause of Failure on KZbin", was the biggest clickbait ever. Even before the first minute ends, you debunk youselves telling that ACTUALLY there are a bunch of reasons to fail, not only one. But you just included all of them under "one" for just the title, which felt weak. Hearing that the reason is "your ability to create content" made me feel cheated. And, actually, 2/3 of that video is just you showing your studio. I mean, I can understand you guys trying to be "the example" of how you do things so we can relate and apply them. Yeaaaaah, not gonna happen. Mainly because your audience (I think and assume) are channels not your size. With this new approach and style it seems like you are making this more about YOURSELVES instead of US, and that's NOT how it used to feel with Nate. I liked Nate. But I didn't know anything about his feelings or about his personal life when I watched videos with him. And I didnt need to. That's why he felt "useful". Not necesarily "relatable".

Personally the first 2 videos were way too fast. I feel like those types are more targeted to a younger audience. The last 2 were more my style lol. I plan to implement these things going forward. One thing you said that almost made me click off on the 3rd channel review "this was the smallest channel we reviewed" and immediately I thought, this is gonna be hard to relate to and also, dang I wasn't picked.

They'll get better with experience :-) I do find with some of the examples that I'd be turned off, the whiplash on the Master Builders video was huge, so a good example that there's no One Size Fits All with videos. Great information to help me as I think about actually doing videos more than every couple of years 😅

Great info! I understand how this works for talking videos, reviews, tutorials etc, but i don't know how i can implement this on my style of videos. I do cinematic videos, mostly about my travels where i showcase a specific place/town, so genuine question, how can i implement these tips? I feel like if i show all the highlights in the first 15-30 seconds then there's no reason to watch the rest of my video 🤔
@ChannelMakers

Maybe you could find a way to tease some of the best shots in the video without giving them completely away in the intro. It will probably take some testing to find out what works for your video style, but it's totally worth doing!

@@ChannelMakers I appreciate the reply, yeah I'll probably have to find a way to do that without damaging the flow of rest of the video 🤔 good thing my channel is still very small so I can experiment as much as I want 😅

Your first 30 seconds should focus on the story of your location or find a person or event to highlight from the location that makes it worth learning about. The person or event could be historical or current. Just an idea.

@@modernlinguists thank you, these are some great ideas but i feel that it's not really the style i am going for. I wanna create cinematic videos, that are beautiful and relaxing to watch. That's what i love to do. I understand that making informative or more documentary style videos would get me more views but it's not something that actually interests me and i know i won't be putting my soul into it. I guess i need to experiment more and find out how i can make my idea work without compromising it too much to the point that it's not fun to make anymore. I don't wanna make videos just to get views, i wanna do something i actually love doing and if i can get the views that would be great ☺

Just an idea. How about showing a brochure or website of where you are going, some of you climbing steps in slow motion with some music then the expression on your face when you finally hit the destination for example. I could imagine this as very cinematic with some music and the right shots but obviously you would want to vary it up

question on intros - what is considered "intro" . I have a big drop off and it's prob because of this. My blueprint is "hook + intro video + introducing myself + CTA - then I get into the video. I just timed it and it's 1 min for all this. (this is the scripting I was taught in a realtor yt course - but I think it's killing my videos 😱😱- thx!

Not every subject benefits from rapid cuts. How about videos about slow, tranquil topics? Meditation? Zen? Bonsai? Those rapid jump cuts would put that audience off.

what if what you want to do might seem to be too weird that an audience just wont form? i write original stories, narrate them and pair it with 3d arts. i do know that i need to constantly make my videos better, and i try to step-up ideas over time. but the audience seems to be non-existing. whats next? edit: i A/B tested titles. results, changing titles into a more "sensationalized" format did not affect the video statistics at all. as in zero 0.

Off topic comment, but many times throughout this video (1:58 for example) the male host reminds me of Ryan Gosling. It's mostly mannerisms, facial expressions, and the same "kind" eyes. As a photographer I tend to key in on these things and just thought I'd mention. Great video with useful info too.

Really helpful video. Usually I try to make the hook no longer than 30 seconds. However, most of my videos retention are around 50% at 30 seconds. Then it just goes down from there. Do you recommend keeping the hook closer to 15 seconds? Also, if I was to get that number higher and be at around 70% at 30 seconds, will KZbin start pushing my video to way more people?
@ChannelMakers
@ChannelMakers Жыл бұрын
Yes, I'd typically recommend you keep the hook closer to 15 seconds unless the style of your intro really requires it to be longer. It looks like you have quite a few vids uploaded already which gives you some great data to go off of. Try looking at your best performing videos by views and see if you notice any patterns on the intros. After that try to find patterns on any intros on videos that are above your average of around 50% in the first 30 seconds. As far as yt pushing your videos it will help but you probably won't notice a huge jump, especially not right away. - Julia
