Seriously. I never used grab when first playing Smash. It always seemed like slow attack that wasn't very big. I never used it and then wondered what to do when my friend shielded.

I don't play anywhere near competitive level so it doesn't really matter but I have a stupid habit of not grabbing for the whole beginning of a match, remembering that grabbing exists, and do nothing but try to get a grab for the next 5 minutes

To add on, this is why watching VODs speed up your skill level. You can watch how players can punish each other for their habits. So when you go to play an opponent and recognize the same situation, you can do the same thing as the player you watched.

As a fighting game veteran, I'd say this is pretty solid advice. The biggest step up in skill level in almost any fighting game is when performing any particular move is no longer an issue, and instead it becomes a chess match of predicting how to outsmart your opponent's arsenal with yours.
@benjaminshields9421
@benjaminshields9421 3 жыл бұрын
I would argue that this chess match is the core of all fighting games.
@tyrenace6597
@tyrenace6597 3 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminshields9421 Yeah but on different fighting games it takes a little longer to reach the chess match portion. To reach the chess match portion, you have to actually know most of the opponent's character's options. But then you have games where it takes a little longer just to learn one character let alone 40+ characters with over 60 moves each (Tekken).Usually, when you reach the chess match portion, fighting games become less frustrating, and more fun to a player that wants to be competitive. Just takes a lot longer to leave that frustrating period in some fighting games compared to others.
@benjaminshields9421
@benjaminshields9421 3 жыл бұрын
@@tyrenace6597 While I agree, I still feel that, until you reach that point of knowledge, you havent been playing the core "game" of the fighting game.
@tyrenace6597
@tyrenace6597 3 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminshields9421 Exactly, and that's why there is a frustrating period. Because you know your missing out. 9/10 Watching the chess matches is what got you into that fighting game in the first place. Only to realize that some fighting games require you to gain so much knowledge to even gain access to that part of the game. That's why fighting games are such a niche part of the gaming world.

I really appreciate the advice you give us after noticing the mistakes made by the beginners you fought. It helps me a lot and shows that you are a humble person ;) Also, after your great "How to approach in Smash" video, I'd like to see a "how to flee" video. I explain : I noticed that when I loose the advantage in a fight and my opponent start chasing me, I usually try to survive by fighting back, but that only give my opponent more opportunities to punish me. It might be interesting to talk about it, don't you think?

Moving on from beginner to more intermediate concepts? Awesome! This is something I’ve seen a lot of people I help struggle with. You’ve moved on from the, “Do this specifically and win more.” To, “Retaining information from your opponent plays a big part to winning, but not everything will work 100% of the time.” Excited to see if you will move on to more advanced topics like conditioning!
