I use my gate after any drive pedal. It's the last in line before the front of the amp. I tried before drive pedals years ago but found using it after worked better. Amp is a mesa triple rectifier.

When Empress came out with the Buffer +, I was so excited because it is a buffer, boost, and noise gate in one pedal. Awesome! Only problem is the noise gate feature does not have a variable dial, just off, low, or high. So I guess I still need a separate noise gate pedal.
@VertexEffectsInc2 жыл бұрын
Wonder if it's for the guitar or on the output. I would assume the output but that might hurt your delay and reverb decay.
@SDisonYT2 жыл бұрын
@@VertexEffectsInc I believe it is the output, but I only use the Empress buffer between the guitar and amp as the buffer loop. My delay and reverb are after the amp, which is also after the Empress, so the noise gate in the buffer doesn’t touch those effects.

I use a 2nd gate. One basic one after the compressor/overdrive. Just before the amp input. The 2nd gate is at the amp before the input and at the fx loop. My Two Notes Torpedo Captor 8 sends direct signal of the preamp and poweramp sent to the stereo fx section. Then my stereo return goes to 2 Two Notes Torpedo Cab M plus IR DI boxes. Main outputs go to PA. The other non speaker sim signal drives stereo poweramp and cabs
@QuikdethDeviantart Жыл бұрын
This is confusing. You said the distortion pedals are fed from the send of the gate/loop, then to the FRONT of the amp. Then put the send on the amp fx loop back to return on gate/loop… then what… your reverbs/delays and final output go into the return of the FX loop on the amp? Is that correct or am I missing something?

Input to guitar, Od/Dist pedals to the front of the amp, return of NG to the send of amp, then output of NG to the rest of pedals.. But what about the output of the last pedal? That's never mentioned. Im confused.

I used to have a noise gate, and still have one built in my Pod Pro, but aren’t they kind of like a band-aid, where you’re not curing the real wound? I need to Patreon you so you will advise me on my system. I have a mono path going into my Pod Pro, then a stereo FX send/return handling my stereo reverb and delay. @VertexEffectsInc Жыл бұрын
I re-watched the video, the diagram is correct. Maybe where we placed the jacks is incorrect as they have a bit of a non-standard application compared to most pedals that stack the input and send on one side and output and return on the other. Link the video form ISP and I can confirm.

You say it goes right before any overdrives/Distortions. Do you think it should go before compressor too? Because it does raise the buzz from a guitar and it might make it harder for the gate to tell the difference between buzz and guitar notes. What do you think 🤔 I don’t own a noise gate but im definitely looking into it

@AnodyneHipsterInfluencer2 жыл бұрын
I got a little confused by this. Can you help me with how you'd go about using the same type of noise gate (like the boss ns2 with in, out, send and return) where I'm running vintage amps with no fx loop and everything is going into the front of the amp. If I go into the pedalboard, then to _IN_ of the noise gate, then run all my big muff and higher gain/noisier drives in it's loop, the from it's _OUT_ to the rest of my pedals (modulation and time based fx) the noise gate won't affect any of my time based trails, yeah?
@VertexEffectsInc2 жыл бұрын
You run the send and return as an effects loop around your gain pedals...like overdrive, distortion, etc. I would keep all time based and modulation pedals out of it. Anything before the input of the noise gate and after the output of the noise gate won't be subject to the "Gate" effect.

Another great video Mason. I am using a TC Sentry noise gate. Could I use this method to run a two amp rig? Specifically, could I spilt the signal using a Radial Twin City after the Sentry send? Only one of my amps has an effects loop. Thanks for your expertise.
@VertexEffectsInc Жыл бұрын
It would depend on how you're dividing up your time-based effects and what's being used in the loop versus not in the loop.
@itsbrendoni3444 Жыл бұрын
any affects that linger like delay, reverb, and so on will cause problems unless you feel like getting real fancy with cable splitters

Hi Mason, Before entering the amp input, is it better to place a wah pedal before or after the noise gate pedal? I have a Cry Baby Dimebag and an ISP Decimator G String. Thanks and have a nice day
@VertexEffectsInc Жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on how much gain your wah has and if it really needed to be gated out. Some wahs can be noisy, but other pedals follow that aren't so bad so putting the gate too early can impact some pedals negatively.

How to use them when the amp has no effects loop?
@skepticalbystander Жыл бұрын
PLEASE HELP!! So I've owned and implemented two noise gates for years and years now, one in front of the amp, with just drive pedals in the gate's loop, and one in the fx loop with just my EQ and mod effects in that gate's loop, then that gate outputs to my verbs and delay, and back into the amp's loop...is your method you explained here a better option than my setup with two independent gates for front and fx loop, especially since they're two Boss NS-2s, especially when the threshold on the one in front is at 1 oclock, and threshold for thebone in fx loop is at noon? I also just got an MXR Poly Blue Octave, it has the built-in fuzz circuit, if I remember right, don't people typically put their octaves before the gate? If so, should my Poly Blue be before the gate, or in the gates loop? This IS a bit more confusing than I always thought it to be :P maybe not by a whole lot, but any clarification on my situation would be a much appreciated life saver!! I just got my first pedalboard when I've needed one for over 10yrs now, I got a 43" board, and trying to fit about 28 or so pedals on it...not gonna lie, a tiny bit of a different task than straight on the floor with no board, trying to figure out the best layout while watching videos like this, and I like the challenge and the puzzle aspect is enjoyable, but it's not without the question or two that I keep finding along the way 😅 thanks for all the info you share with us!!

But you don’t need 4 cables these days do you? Seems so dated. Mine works fine with no extra cables
@VertexEffectsInc2 жыл бұрын
YES, you DO if you have an amp with an effects loop and gain pedals. It depends on your set up and amp, so there's not blanket statement that "You Don't Need Four Cables" that works in some (if not most) contexts.
