Do we need a new dam in the Orange river? 85 years history of the flow of the Orange river.

It is a flood in the Orange river that sparked my research into the history of the river. knowing the past prepares you for the future.
The recent 3 years of flooding had many ask the question whether this has happened before or whether a change in climate conditions is driving it.
The video looks at the data , not so much pictures, but i hope it can convey somewhat of a picture of the rivers change over the past 85 years.

Wow Jors. You must have put in a helluva lot of time and effort on this one. Brilliantly researched and presented. Thank you very much. Many, many years ago (I'm surprised I can remember that far back) I lived in Prieska for a year while working on the construction of the new large diameter water pipeline from Prieska to Copperton for the new copper mine there. I arrived late at night in August 1970 and rushed down the next morning to see the mighty Orange river. I was bitterly disappointed to find this very wide dry river bed with a trickle of water running down the middle. The people in Prieska told me to wait until the rainy season, the river would come down in a flood of water carrying trees, cows, sheep and everything else with it. Everybody would rush off to Augrabies to watch the flood go over the falls. Sadly, I never saw it because that year they closed the new dams under construction and caught the flood waters. The river just rose slowly until it was as wide as the river bed. When I first came across your KZbin channel I finally got to see the Augrabies in flood. I look forward to your drone footage of it. Thanks very much for filling in a gap in my memories.

Thanks Jors, very informative. The double spikes in volume of water you mention in your video. One variable to consider is the dam levels prior to the spike (available storage). The floods of Nov/Dec 2022 come with the 4 major dams already at about 95% capacity, plus Lesotho dams pretty full. I was at Gariep for a tour where i was informed its lowest level was 19% and it was full within a month or two. The point I'm making is the impact of flood levels on the lower Orange is definity determined on the available storage at the various upper dams. A lot to digest, but very informative, thank you.
@JorsMalan
@JorsMalan Жыл бұрын
Yes the status of the dams before the rain season plays a big roll. it is one of the big thinks that gets discussed early in a rain seson, should the create more flood control capacity by releasing more water or not? A 2000 Cumec constant flow will fill the Gariep from empty within about 1 monthand we saw inflows of about 5000 in hte last 2 seasons, so it can certainly fill up quick.

Thanks Jors ! Most informative..! In the mid 60's a Senior Mentor & myself worked on a Report to optimize water useage from Lake Kariba to provide and top up the Vaal Triangle shortage during the Industrial Boom..aswell as a Fuel Return Pipe Line...! The Tugela Basin Development at the time, was way over due and snubbed for political reasons by the the then " Powers in Command " ! The Report progressed to BJV's attention thru' the hands of a sharp NP Councillor from JHB at the time, but sadly came to a grinding halt, obviously to apply Political pressure on the then UDI Government...! The moral of the storey is that...sadly. " Politicians lie the minute they open their mouths " Au-revoir..!!

Hi Jors, this was a super interesting video. Did you reach a conclusion regarding the question of frequency of floods in relation to global temperature rise? You've mentioned before that we are in an extended La Nina, which has brought more rain during the summer seasons. Can this be attributed to climate change? Historically have we had these many years of consecutive "High Flow" seasons? Once again thanks so much for your time and effort to research this important subject. Please keep them coming. Maybe you can interview some academics on SA's hydrology history, Dam design, basically all things water. This channel could really take-off in a big way. Please keep it up!
@JorsMalan
@JorsMalan Жыл бұрын
I don't think we have enough data to say anything conclusively redarding climate change, the early 30's looked pretty much like the current 3 year rains. The mid 70's the same which points to a 40-45 year cycle. Then there is the smaller 11 year cycle that give you roughly 3 wet years, 5 normal years and 3 dry years, though the river seemed to have run dry for most years before the building of the dams. So much more information, it is a bit heavy for a one man show like mine, but hopefully in future i have more time for the channel.

Howdy Jors Once a Hydrologist. always a hydrologist. I am one That was an excellent synopsis, in general Maybe do a literature search for publications by Waterwese on your interests. Could add The dams obviously dampen rampant floods that would have occurred prior Those floods created the relatively fertile flood plains upon which your Company is farming As an aside. there's a dam named Smartt Syndicate Dam. 103 million cubic metres capacity It is/was? a "make hay while the sun shines" dam. Absolutely no sustainable yield. no matter how big it is Which matters

Thank you Jors ! Absolutely well done. After keeping rain records for 55 years here on the East coast, it looks to me as though climate change is a myth, but yes interpretation of results is often difficult. One thing that surprised me was the actual amount of evaporation just from our swimming pool. Extrapolating this volume to the size of a dam, particularly the inland dams during a drought adds up to quite a few litres of water, hence the deeper the dam is per unit area, the lower the loss must be.
@JorsMalan
@JorsMalan Жыл бұрын
Mike it is always a pleasure. Keeping rainfall records for 55 years should make for very interesting data. Our evaporation here is extremely high, a Relative Humidity of 40% is high for us and I have seen an RH of 3% at 48 degrees. It does help with cooling your body through evaporative cooling.

One was/is considered to be built just upstream of Vioolsdrif, I don't think it is going to happen though. I don't really know whether there are really good places remaining, and by that I mean places where it can be done cost effectively without submerging large area of good farm land.

The Katse must also be taken into consideration as it feeds the Vaal system, however I do not think data is available of the impact it has on the dam. Currently the Lesotho government is builing the Mohale dam to feed the Katse but due to bad governance the project is years behind schedule. To build a new dam is also a very complex situation. The amount of land taken up by the water stored in the dam as well as the environmental effect are but two aspects to be considered.

Sterkfontein is almost a topic on its own, it is a very large dam, but with the smallest catchment area. due to the small catchment area it is not in danger of flooding and therefore it is unique in that it has no spillway. though it stores a huge amount of water it does not impact much by way of flood or flood control.

As the region is definitely headed for increased drought due to global warming, building more dams surely means disaster for the river's ecology and therefore, everyone living below the dams.

Recently, there has been flooding In the orange river, in Upington. The Upington relies more on Agricultural activities which is of economic importance for the country as it brings in revenue, however due to the exercissive consumption, my prediction is that over the next decade the quality of water of the orange river In the region will deteriorate.

@@EmihleMarambana Global warming is the wild card for many such vulnerable ecosystems worldwide. Everything is happening in excess - where there were once seasonal floods, now the floods are ten times more severe... I don't actually know what to suggest, especially as the region is definitely headed for drought and we have a relatively inactive and incompetent government at the moment..

Would dredging the the dams in the drought seasons not help to increase the volume of water held when the rain returns

Sterkfontein dam, athough a very large dam has only a small catchment area and is designed primarily for storage with no need to or capacity to control floods. it therefore has a big impact on droughts , but not much on floods.

Baie interessant, Jors.

The Dessert is not moving like the Namib desert does, so the rive is just a constant green ribbon that cuts through the middle of it.
