I quit Facebook, Twitter and Instagram over 3 years ago and it was a good decision for me. It seemed to simplify things in my life.

I like that, using these platforms responsibly. I find myself unfollowing "influencers" if I'm not gaining any value from the people I follow, watch or listen to. KZbin for example is a great platform to learn new skills like how to fix your car, or how to crochet, or how to play the violin.

I quit social media, and I became interested in minimalism as it was better for my mental health :) KZbin is a creative platform, but I think it depends on the content you consume - that's where KZbin can get bad but luckily I use it the same way as you! also I could listen to you guys for hours honestly

yes and I have. No Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, Shut off all my blogs. It's odd I do something and think ok now I have to share....oh wait, no I don't have to anything else. I have discovered something. I feel when I do something and I can't share it, it feels like I haven't done it. That's scary.

abstractsbybrian yeah man. People think I am dead due to me not ever posting on FB. Or inconviniece of telling of recent event/trip/adventure to everyone personaly instead of 1 post that everyone would see. As an introvert, repeating your story 20 times just feels bad. It is like reciting a play not a genuine conversation at that point. Jeez, that was a weird rant...

As a social media manager I can’t quit social media as it is my work place. 😉 But I use it intentionally and consciously and luckily the company I work for doesn’t always want to put advertising in social media, but also good or fun content so even after 8 years doing it I still love my work and the interaction with our followers. On a private level social media is important to me to stay in contact with my friends all over the world. I also run a self help group in Facebook. I think the key is to not use it mindlessly, and to only follow those people your care about.

I love this video. I have my KZbin channel and I see that as my creative outlet but I have recently quit all other social media for lent and so far -- day 3 I love it. I find that I have more time, less stress and anxiety and just time to focus on my and my little family. Less distraction and just so much more calm. I can't wait to start living in this real world again. Thank you for your video.

There was a time I was sick and kept thinking I won't last the year, and I won't have enough time to engage with my family and friends, so I let go of most of my social media platforms, buying more time and concentration. And it felt right, actually it was the right thing to do. I started to finish some unfinished job and engage in some excercises and have more quality time _with the time I thought I had left. Hopefully I last. At the meantime I came up with a lesson and that is: no matter what, you can always keep your options open and decide which way is better and more valuable for you to add more quality and meaning to your life, INTENTIONALLY.

When I arrived to college when I was single I deleted my Facebook, for almost 2 years. I used to go on dates with people who'd say 'I tried finding you on Facebook and couldn't find you' in some cases it was a life saver because it helped me see the true friends I had and the ones that weren't. After I got married I decided to create an account to see what family was up to and keep the early friendships I developed in college.

In minimalising my stuff my values became clear and I realised social media was draining me and honestly adding no value to my mental health. I deleted the apps for a weekend and I was so worried about missing out I didn’t realise all the things I would gain. So that weekend turned into a month and now 3! I have filled that ‘distraction’ time with yoga, friends, good coffee, travel and it’s been nice to get bored. I’m watching KZbin, watching thought provoking content and feel tonnes better. I don’t think it’s bad, you need personal boundaries and if it feels shit stop doing it. Simple

Not entirely social media specifically but I was heavily involved in MMO's for several years and after burn out, spending way too much money on those games and toxic communities I quit those social platforms entirely. Years later I found that social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram was becoming too toxic and I ultimately quit those platforms. I fully deleted Twitter mainly because I got tired of all the discourse and hateful rhetoric on there and even though I still technically have a Facebook and Instagram accounts open, I deleted everyone except for only a handful of people I went to school with and left all the groups I was in because I found that having a civil conversation over a topic would result in someone getting their feelings hurt over something really ridiculous. Much rather have someone call or text me if they really need to reach out. If not it's no love loss. I"d rather live in the moment being my authentic self with only a few other individuals who really want me around or by myself.

I don't use Instagram, and Twitter. And I am using Facebook to follow the group which as Dave Ramsey baby steps community, YNAB fans and the PMP certification exam pre group. Those groups help me keep me on track and reach my goals. However I am not as big fan to read other people's post such as what they eat or where they travel to...

Hi Josh, love the video. I deactivated my Facebook account about two months ago, deleted the app on my cell phone, and I don't miss it one bit. I'm not on Twitter, or Instagram. I'm thinking about deleting my Facebook account altogether. Parts of me don't want to, other parts say do it. I'm on You Tube, love watching your videos, and other videos as well. Ones that make me laugh, ones that are informative, etc. Like you said, it brings me value, thus that's why I won't ever get rid of it. :)

Happy Birthday, Josh!! Have a Wonderful day tomorrow!! Yes, I do think about cutting out facebook, or at least cutting down to just ONCE a day. ~ Have never been on any other media sites ~ Facebook has become a platform for "political squabbles" and very negative and/or depressing stories. I'm finding that I am cutting out people one by one. Soon, there will be about 5 left, the happy positive people that simply post fun, uplifting subjects! Lol

I'm reading Cal Newport's Deep Work and am in the process of implementing time blocks for internet. I don't have anything but KZbin and currently Instagram (which I plan on switching to only business posts and checking once a day and taking Monday's off from any media because it's our family movie night). Just me! I don't think people get as much value as they think they do from social media, but I think Cal has a really great idea of not only the effects of distraction but the reality of it's application.

I quit FB, Instagram, and Twitter this week! Coincidental post here. I would get so lost in the sauce I had to get rid of them. I feel entirely more free without it. I read more, I write more, I am better off without the distraction of other people's 'created lives' on social media. For me that was always the problem! People wanted to appear a certain way that didn't seem novel or authentic! So that's my take on it. Many thanks!

I met my husband on American singles. It was in 1997 before everyone met each other on internet sites. I was told it was dangerous. I think I’ve always been ahead of everyone on social media. It’s a part of us now. If your not on social media it’s like your either trying to find yourself or get attention from it. Or your an off the grid kind of person. It’s nice to turn it off once in a while.

Oh I've been quitting many times, for me is pretty traumatic because i am a victim of cyber bullying - i closed down facebook ever since i was harassed, i had to seek therapy to get over trauma. I think theres too many keyboard warriors out there who do not live a meaningful life so they hunt for innocent victims to prey on to tease/ harass/ just to make themselves better. Afterall, social media is a gratificated reality of what they portray - so they portray their fake self to belittle others. Social media is not a place to thrive at unless is for education purposes - which will never be as people use it for profits and glamourfication of their life. I prefer to be at peace with myself, also more productivity can be done without social media- the endless scrolling only leads to more comparison and hatred. Is better to filter noises than to consume it.

"I want to quit distractions." Perfect. That is all social media and I'm not a joiner of any of them for months at this point. I did quit social media forever and have never missed it (Facebook was the only thing I was a member of for a few months), not a member of any other. I have been turning this thought over... but I have an on-line business and apparently one must BE on social media to appear as a "serious" business, because 'If you're not on Facebook, you pretty much don't exist'. What advice would you give in that respect? I find the whole idea of throwing my products on Insta/Fb/ Pinterest exhausting, when all I want to do is create those products. Still, no on-line presence= no sales. How could this circle be broken, or, at least... improved?

Have you heard of Cal Newport? He could give you an answer to your question. I think it's in his Deep Work book that he talks about that. I mostly use twitter to get some local news (I don't watch TV) and have to admit I sometimes fall in the mindless "thought broadcasting" you were talking about at the start of this video. I definitely don't use Facebook but have to have it open because of some group organised by people who I work with (I wish they would just agree on any cloud service for uploading data) and definitely use WhatsApp but that's more a messaging app than social. At least I use it as regular messaging. Also, I don't use Instagram because I feel is more like a prefab marketing and/or ad agency, so I'll probably reopen it when I have a valid excuse to open a business account there. Lastly, I do use VSCO, which is more of a photo editing/publishing tool (I'm into photography) and lately they've included messaging within the app. No follower count. Just private messaging and a separate collection of your favourites you stumble upon made public (better than mindlessly liking). Wait, is that social already?

Omg...every second of every day. But I have met some awesome people so it’s worth the trouble. I was 12 when I got my first computer and I was online with prodigy talking to people when the internet wasn’t born yet. We had to buy a second phone line to use it. Young people don’t realize how great technology is today. My first real full time job was in 1991when I graduated high school and the store electronics boutique where I worked sold mostly software then ( now it’s called game stop And it’s all about video games) learned more there from the software reps that would come in and the regular customers who were full of knowledge. You learn a lot from being social. I wouldn’t change a thing. And I appreciate technology because I remember when it wasn’t there.

Yarrow Joy I feel the same, it's like the videos are pretty alike apart from the title. But this I think is the issue with minimalism video in general. I wish they accounted for more precise and rich description of the topic and then provide a number of proper suggestions, not only saying just what they do in their life. They are great guys but new ideas are needed after a while ;)

Yarrow Joy same for me :) I keep enjoying the videos and keep watching them. Also, I generally think that if everybody start to make the "same" minimalist videos, it's actually a good thing because the movement it's spreading and we can appreciate even the cuteness of the beginners. Concerning the experts, we are also legitimate as audience and practiced minimalists to ask for more, when otherwise we don't provide new ideas ourselves.
