hanks for posting another informative and succinct video, Paul. Another way to tell rev B from rev C is that on the common rev B the 'N' of 'ONE' is slightly out of alignment being skewed anticlockwise and the 'PENNY' is evenly spaced, whereas on rev C the 'N' is correctly aligned, but there is a slightly larger gap between the 'E' and the 'N' of 'PENNY'. Both are quite subtle differences, but they can be useful in determining whether a particular reverse is B or C.

Many thanks for the brilliant video - really helpful . I had somehow assumed it was 1895 that had the dot ! (its the Trident - how could I have confused the two) . Anyway checked my 1897's. Think I have a dot penny on a coin similar grade to the one you first shared (need to check with microscope) also two worn High Tide's (the Shield is an excellent guide - really helped - and when you look there are some waves or rocks on the very bottom left of the shield and the left hand rock or wave is slightly shorter I think). And.. as well as finding some 7's (from 1897) slightly up or slightly down, I have an 1897 where the 9 and 7 are close together - like the 9 and 6 in the 1896 Penny , only the one though.

I have a high tide variety in quite nice condition probably between those first 2 examples you showed. Did not realise how much it has gone up in price. I guess mine would be 100 to 150 now. Last time i looked it up some years ago it was about a tenner!

Have you encountered minting errors on the obverse? I have two 1897 coins, one with a distinct 'tail' at about 10 o'clock on the back of the 'C' of Victoria. The other coin, in the 'A' of GRA there's a 'tail' extending downwards from bar of the centre of the letter. Also the peak of the 'A' is mis-shapen.

What sort of grade would you give your 51 Penny Paul😉. I am surprised the 1897 was graded as extremely fine though, even with its age

Hi Ian. If you gave a coin to lots of different coin dealers you wouldn't get them all agreeing on it's grade. I look at the images on London coin auctions and hardly ever agree with the gradings. I would say my 1951 is in Very Fine condition. 👍

Alas my 1897 1d. is the common type B, but on my Edward V11 1907 low tide 1d. on comparing the two I believe that in 1907 type B is the scarce issue and type C the common. Also on studying your two close ups at 4:46 type B has more of a wave lapping over the bottom of the shield and also there is more of the plinth of the lighthouse showing to the left of the shield.

Hi Peter, as far as I'm aware, the only reverse for a 1907 penny was type C

My mistake my Edward V11 low tide penny is 1902 not 1907, could this be type B? most of my UK copper/ bronze is EF or UNC and I only collect types not year runs (due to cost) there is a distinct difference between my George V 1913 and 1932 reverse with the latter having the high shield and on George V1 the full lighthouse returns I learnt a lot in this video. @@CoinPatrol
