I noticed the same thing. Serbians are now close to a homogeneous European state, rather than a strongly distinct culture as they were forty years ago. On the other hand, the people of today seem more friendly. I guess life under communism made people less trusting.

Croatia was, for the most part of its history, a part of Austro-Hungary. Coast was under Venetian rule, so two predominant influences in architecture are central-European and Italian. Communism added some concrete and steel over those foundations, while Croatian flavor was released by building stuff with no proper permissions, in places where nothing of sort should be built. :D

I'm surprised cause in France we let tips..., but it's true maybe more often in Paris and big cities in France. But yes I bit agree...I realized, living now in Britanny, that outside big cities people don't let tips so often. I asked my friend why they don't, they told me that they never let tips... I was shocked... But I still let tips. Maybe because I was waiter too when I was student, i liked tips... So I remember of that and I let tips. it could be me... I remember in Austria, I would let tips but waiter said to me that's it wasn't allowed... So it's difficult to know what to do sometimes. And I think in some other countries I think it's not really allowed.

It is interesting how some Croats cannot take a compliment. I was saying something positive: not being hateful is POSITIVE. Apparently, some people would rather we said about them that they are mean. Strange, isnt it? My comment was driven by the knowledge of all the historical problems/wars between Croats and Serbs. You don't have to be a Yugoslav, or want to live all together again, to be nice and objective. The comments my post received show the commmentators' disappointment with the people questioned on the street for not being rude and vulgar against the Serbs. People don't have to LOVE each other: being polite is just a civilized way of living among people. No need to read too much into that.

We are not some radical crazy fascists as we are always described by some mainstream ideology medias and by some jealous neighbors and countries. We learn English since kindergarten. We have been under rule of Austro Hungarian empire, the center of civilization with Holy Roman empire and before it literally in middle of Roman empire the cradle of civilization . We were and are in a center of all art, architecture, science, literature pages that Europe ever had to offer. We are not savages.

I'm a American that lives in the Balkans. I fully agree with the intelligent, wise man that dislikes the U.S. As I left my homeland for all those reasons, plus more. Lots of smiling (so you'll drop your guard), greedy, selfish, backstabbing, warmongering (remain silent so not to look unpatriotic), that have absolutely no interest in learning the truth about anything, and knowing about other countries.
