Thank you so much for this. After a few weeks I got this, just when I was starting to get power in it. If it takes 6 months the winter will be here when I'm healed. I guess I'll start swimming or something. Having this for years is not an option.

Thank you thank you!! Video is greatly appreciated. I do a lot of flicking and spin putting and noticed my elbow just hurts now, the pain goes away but every morning I wake up it's stiff and sore until it gets moving again. I can't stop playing disc golf so I'm starting to learn left handed hahah. Glad to know what I need to do to heal and prevent injury.

How can I prevent this in the future?

Best cure is kettle bell swings. Strengthen your shoulders and wrists. Injury in elbow are often due to weakness somewhere further down the kinetic chain and the muscles around the elbow are trying to stop the strain on the joint or are being recruited to do the job your other joints cannot. I did 400 swings with at 25 lbs over 12 hours and went from not being able to close my hand without pain to almost no pain all together.

I'm 65 and throw both backhand & forehand. I am a spin putter as well. After experiencing tendonitis in my elbow, I dropped from throwing 172gm discs down to @150gm discs. Regardless of arm health, I always stretched before & after and I always ICED when I got home. A hot tub also helps. A typical day for me is 36 holes and I average 2-3 rounds per week. With the lighter discs, my pain went away completely, distance(@300-350ft) never suffered and the wind didn't bother the drives. Now, when I throw a 170gm disc, it feels like a pig. I think throwers with elbow pain should consider THROWING LIGHTER DISCS. My spin putts never bothered my elbow & I love throwing 'circle two' putts hard at the chains. I've always thrown lightweight @160gm putters because they reminded me of freestyle discs. (Sometimes the big winds can affect those).

flyingfishsurf, thanks for the comment! Glad to hear your elbow pain went away. Sounds like you had a good combo routine that attacked it from many angles. Interesting to hear your experience with lighter discs. Sounds like that was definitely the right direction for you to take.

I had what I thought was tennis elbow thing when playing disk golf but I hapily found I out it was largly carpal tunnel sydrome while discussing it with my doctor. He arranged for me to get a simple procedure called a "carpal tunnel realease" and the pain isn't 100% gone but it's 90% better. It was totally covered by insurance becasue its considered a work related type problem.

Hi Lukasz! Glad you are finding the tips useful! If there is any inflammation in the wrist, than resting it for a bit would be very helpful. I would try working on your grip strength and see if that helps. If that doesn't help, then seeing a Doctor would be the next best step.

Rest and time for sure, anyone who previously overloaded their elbow in this fashion should probably get stretching and self-massage into their future routine as a preventive measure against relapse or just aid recovery somewhat. If you have the opportunity and know a good massage therapist it can be a great help in sorting out the problem. (I go to one a few times a year who also happens to be a physical therapist, great combo.)

To get over pain, build up your elbow with use but not abuse. Even the bones themselves can adapt their shape and size to loads over time (look up research on baseball pitchers' arms). But don't push it so hard as to cause chronic pain; like Seth says, rest up if you do - you'll come back stronger.

My elbow problem from drives and putts is a bit different. I started with doing hard drives and I used my arm to power it and flung my arm over so the elbow bent the wrong way and the bones on the outside of the elbow hit each other hard! I stopped doing that like almost a year ago because I got better technique with my drives. I do however still have some pain and am a bit swollen and my putts still sometimes make my elbow bend over backwards and make my bones hit each other...

nice again! just subscribed and due to a hit and run accicdent some months back I busted my elbow and ripped the tendons and ligaments in my wrist. Busy recovering but still really sore elbow especially on F/h drives. Trying to get my extension and flexibility back. I find flex shots hurt more for some reason and low flip releases less so. Im still getting out to about 100m max but dont want to damage further. Any tips for safe stretching? thanks in advance.
@DiscGolfStrong7 жыл бұрын
Hey Jon-Pat, sorry to hear about the accident! It can take a while to recover from an injury like that. Definintely work on building up strength and stability in the muscles around the elbow and wrist. If you have something heavy lying around that you can pick up and hold with one hand, then try picking it up and holding it for as long as you can. That will help build up grip strength, which will be very important in your recovery. Hope that helps! I'll get more videos up in the near future about this topic.

Me and my friends get elbow pain that last the entiee day if we throw 5 forehand throws. Thats all it takes, so it seems like alot of the guys here on youtube seem to think the people complaining about hurting their elbow are simply over doing it, but it obviously is some technique fault from us beginners. I can throw backhand all day no problem, but if i do 3-5 forehand throws, my elbow hurts straight away, same as my friends..

So I literally just started playing about 2 weeks ago and I am already experiencing pain in the elbow and the shoulder. Is this do to my body just getting used to a different movement or is this actually like tennis elbow or something like that like you guys are saying
@firacingast4 жыл бұрын
For the record, I'm not a physical therapist or anything of that nature. I'm just gonna give you my experience when I first started disc golf. I had pain my elbow and my shoulder. After doing more research into discs, throwing techniques etc. I realized a lot of my issue was I focused heavily on power over form. You can throw powerful throws and get good distance without tearing your elbow and shoulder to shreds so long as you have good technique. Practice this in an open field by slowly driving your force up. Secondly, look at the weight of your discs. They might be heavier than recommended for new players. Generally discs only vary in weight by 10-15g (about 160-175g) so I'm not going to recommend you get new lighter discs. What I will say is that keep in mind that you're working with a heavier set of discs and thus putting more strain on your elbow and shoulder to throw them... When you notice the pain STOP playing for a few days until it subsides. Just like going to the gym, you're working muscles when you throw a frisbee golf disc and they need to recover. Take a BCAA or protein supplement to strengthen the muscles and curb your recovery time. When you return to playing, make sure you properly stretch and warm your body up. A good addition to my warmup stretching that I do is pushups. I take my previous performance at the course and how ever many over par I ended up I do in push ups to increase my heart rate and get blood and oxygen flowing to my muscles. This helps reduce any chance I overexert myself and end up damaging my body and honestly this is the piece of advice that has provided the biggest benefit to me personally! I know your comment is over a year old and you're probably well past the issues, but for anyone else seeing this comment and dealing with the same issues now, best wishes!

Have you heard of guys like me that have hurt their shoulder from too much push putting? Any other advice in addition to Time, Rest and Ice regularly?
@DiscGolfStrong7 жыл бұрын
Hey Steven, I've definitely heard of shoulder issues arising from too much push putting. When push putting, we are essentially doing a front shoulder raise. If the shoulder joint (glenohumeral joint) doesn't move properly when raising the arm (flexion), the tendons and ligament at the top of the arm bone (humerus) can get pinched between the arm bone and the shoulder joint. This is called a shoulder impingement. It is very common. I would focus on improving your shoulder range of motion, strengthening your shoulder stabilizers, and your shoulder blade (scapula) stability as well. On my website, www.discgolfstrong.com, you can download a free warm up e-book. You also receive a free jump start program as well. Implementing what's in those e-books will definitely get you headed in the right direction. If the pain increases or doesn't get better over time, I would definitely recommend being seen by a physical therapist or chiro to assess your shoulder joint.

all you need to heal tendonitis (tennis elbow) are ultra sound treatments. mendmeshop.com sells little home ultra sound kits for around 200. i bought mine in 2012 used it and my tennis elbow didn't flare back up for 5 years. problem healed. just buy yourself one. it treats dozens of problems. you'll be glad you did. have a good game.

Then i rest for a while and not throw and try to relieve it that way. It doesnt hurt after a while but when i throw again i hear a snap and feel hella pain. Would be appreciated if someone could help me.

m Y b R o D d A s K n O w De WaE Bummer to hear about the pain and elbow dislocations. I would definitely say it sounds like you need to rest it longer and strengthen the muscles of your shoulder and arm. Shoulder taps are a great place to start. I would also HIGHLY recommend you get your elbow evaluated by a medical professional such as a Physical Therapist, Sports Dr, or Sports Chiro. They would do a hands-on eval of your elbow joint, which I would suggest you absolutely need. Hope you find some relief soon!
