Another great video, thanks Ellie Jean! I’d love a video all about frame dominance versus curve dominance versus balance. As a Dramatic Classic, I have mildly broad shoulders, but not width in my upper back. I don’t know how to dress for my shape because I have some Yang influence, but what to do about balance?

Um... You just saved my fashion life. I'm not even joking. Being 5'0" and athletic rather than delicate, I assumed I was a flamboyant gamine, but I'm definitely width dominant with broad shoulders and a wide rib cage. 🤯 What's funny is that I HATE the way gamine styles look on me and feel like I'm playing dress-up. I've always been drawn to natural styles. Three cheers for intuition!

I have very broad shoulders and a huge rib cage. The difference between my top and bottom has been as much as 2 sizes. What I like about the Kibbe system is “accommodating” one’s body, and not trying to hide or balance it. I get really tired of certain influencers telling me my body is somehow flawed. It’s not.

I personally identify as a FN Business Goth (moon, mountain, and stone, if you go by Ellie-Jean's style roots system). I'm very curvy for a FN and also feel like I look terrible in oversized, drapey garments, so I tend to favor styles that err more on the SD side to emphasize my waist, which of course you're not supposed to do as a FN because the vast majority of FNs don't have hourglass figures. One way I found to incorporate the flowing, drapey garments they typically recommend for naturals is to wear an outfit that's otherwise catered to my personal tastes (typically a fitted top w/ slacks or an A-line skirt or dress) with the addition of a pashmina or a soft, draped vest or cardigan, depending on the weather. I've built up a sizeable pashmina collection now, as they're very affordable and available at both hippie festivals and on Amazon. It is just incredible how much they've expanded my wardrobe by providing alternate styling options for many of my staple pieces. I could see that strategy working really well for soft naturals, too. Hope that helps! ❤

I am 5' 8" that is a blend of Hourglass and Triangle. My shoulders are the widest part on me. My body is fairly balanced with my hips pulling a close second, that are still smaller than my shoulders, and my waist is significantly smaller than both. This video did help clarify a bit more about the width that I have and how that relates to type. I feel like I definitely have kibbe width. I have to size up to fit shoulders and arms (I have long arms), my shoulders literally look like a clothes hanger. I figured that I have width in my ribcage by looking at the width in my back. I have a somewhat large bust so its a bit hard to see from the front. But when you look at me from behind, my back looks huge, broad, wide, all that, lol. I do feel like I am one step closer to having all of my questions answered and being 100% certain about where I fall in Kibbe.

Totally agree on the point about this system working for dressmaking! I sew my own clothes, and always have to do what's called a broad shoulder adjustment to accommodate comfortable arm movement when wearing the garment, and so the shoulder seam falls at the furthest horizontal point of my shoulder, which allows the sleeve to drape properly. It's also one of the (many) reasons why ready-to-wear clothing doesn't usually fit me... If I get the proper size to fit my torso / bust, then chances are it will be significantly too small across the shoulders. And if I size up to fit me across the shoulders, then it ends up being oversized in the torso.

I’ve been typed as a kibbe soft classic, which never felt quite right, and I’ve always felt so much better in soft natural lines, and this is why! I've always thought I was Soft Natural because I have broad shoulders. Now I'm realizing I'm more likely Soft Gamine. I've never had to accommodate for my shoulders - for coats, I actually typically need to size down from my normal clothing size to accommodate for my smaller frame. This explanation is so helpful! I've always had the association that broad shoulders = Soft Natural, and I feel like a lot of people on reddit push that narrative.

Oh my goodness, this made so much sense! My shoulders are wider than my hips and I always have to size up shirts and coats to fit my shoulders and long arms. They're very straight, no slope or curve. But I'm tall and slim with long, slender limbs, and very delicate bones, so I don't look wide or broad and I always wondered if I was a dramatic. The descriptor of "frame dominance" makes so much sense...it is my frame, not my flesh, that really dominates my appearance. I think I might be a flamboyant natural and not a dramatic. I feel awful in the tailored, structured clothes designed for dramatics.

I know I'm FN now but I was SO confused about my type for years. I think my width and vertical just kind of balanced each other out in my mind, which meant I couldn't see them and I thought I must be moderate/balanced. If I had just vertical, or just width, it would have been easier to see I think. It didn't help that my hips are just as broad as my shoulders, so confused-me was like "Am I curve dominant??" My ribcage also seems small between my shoulders and hips. After settling on FN, I've come to see that it's absolutely me. I think I was resistant to it for a long time. But since then I've realised I LOVE my lines! I really feel for people who struggle because it sucks to feel like you can't see your body properly or that there's something wrong with you because you don't fit into the system. I hope everyone can find their type!

I was trying and failing to explain this concept just the other day to a friend I recently introduced to Kibbe. I'm a curvy flamboyant natural with very sharp, angular shoulders and the classic triangular upper back, so I was trying to utilize myself as an example. After watching this video again, I am pretty certain that my friend is a soft natural, as she had the broadness but with much more softness and roundness to it. Thanks for your always phenomenal content! I just started this new channel but I've been following you on my old account for quite some time. I think you've had a bigger impact on my personal style than any creator I follow. Thank you, this is so informative! I think it's also important to mention that width will always be there, no matter if you lose or gain weight. I'm a SC but I always thought that when I gain some weight, my upper arms/shoulders become "wider". But actually, they just became a bit fleshier. When I lose weight, this "width" goes away and my upper body has no width to it or stand out. With Models, who are mostly FNs,the width of their shoulders stand out even hen they're extremely skinny.

My shoulders aren’t delicate and sloped. But they aren’t so wide I get comments on them, no one has ever noticed or said I have wide shoulders. The Natural category hadn’t even crossed my mind for these reasons. But my shoulders are just like you described- straight across and shelf like, and are every so slightly wider than my hips. Bags and bra straps never slide down, and I HAVE had to size up in jackets to accommodate them. After watching this video, and looking into SN- wow. It all makes sense. All the celebs I’ve ever been told I look like are on the lists of confirmed or suspected SN’s. All the clothing style recs are what I’ve intuitively known I look my best in- it’s like seeing pictures of my closet. Lol. Oh my, my. I think this basically confirms that I have Kibbe width. I've always been overweight (obese at one point even), so I've had to shop plus-size clothing almost all my life. After getting my weight under control recently, I realised that while I can get normal-size clothes now, I would still be in the L-XL range because my shoulders and overall frame are still pretty broad. So I guess I'm a Kibbe natural of some description (most likely flamboyant because my bone structure is fairly angular)

The shoulder line being the widest part of the body is true in terms of the bones, but with weight gain and more flesh covering those bones, the hips may actually become the widest point especially for FNs, who gain most excess weight at the lower half of their body. I have seen examples of FNs that think they are Ds or SD because of this misunderstanding. In these cases I think the squareness and broadness is still evident, but it can be harder to see it.

You can have width (objective) and appear delicate (subjective). I'm a FN and can be quite fragile-looking, particularly when underweight, because I'm short (5'3) with prominent bones -yet people get very surprised at how wide I actually am at the shoulders 😂 My more delicate traits come from the dramatic undercurrent (sharp and narrow) from FN. The thing is, many of us have a somewhat skewed perception of our own body. You might not be as broad as you think. Or maybe you are, and you're a Natural type that's closer to a Classic! There's some overlap between those types. Not so much between Natural and Gamine, as width and petite can't coexist.

I'm also quite short (the same height as you) and have always thought I have a romantic undercurrent rather than a dramatic one... But I guess I'm probably a FN or DC, because I'm not fleshy at all. Very interesting the thing about the overlap area between Natural and Classic. Anyway, thanks for giving your perspective and experience, always helps :)

I'm so confused, i can't figure out if I have balence or width. I think i'm either a dramatic classic or a soft natural but they're so different idk how i can't tell. What would be some key ways to determine which i am?

i had the hardest time figuring out whether or not i was a soft classic or a soft natural, but ultimately i decided on soft natural because i feel like ive always had a broader ribcage and shoulders and because my mom thought a bikini pic of scar jo was a pic of me from vacation so thanks mom

I have width and hate how flowing fabrics look on me. I need items to cinch in at the waist and I also can’t wear long skirts or wide leg pants. Does that mean I don’t actually have width?

Having width and double curve I think makes me a soft natural but I can pull of some sharpness as long as it has some soft lines . The vertical line helped to as I'm only slightly long

So, how you difer dramatic classic from FN? I am always between them. I refer to no so easy cases. For example, for me is easy to see wisth on charlize theron, but not so easy on katy perry or gwyneth paltrow.

Great vid !!! Could you pleaseeee explain balance ? Im supposed to be DC but have a hard time seeing it in me or even others and it makes it difficult to "accomodate". Maybe the "extremes" are easier to spot, but I havent seen much content on this :(

Thanks for answering some questions I’ve had about width! I am fairly certain I am a FN. I am around 5ft 8 in and my shoulders are the widest part of my body. If a jacket doesn’t fit it is due to the shoulders being to constricting. However, I have quite delicate bones. My neck, wrists and ankles are very slender. Would this be a sign I am not FN? Thank you so much for all of your videos, they have made me feel a lot more confident and comfortable in my body. For the first time I am embracing my lines and my personal style ❤

Same here. I have slender limbs and joints, but I definitely have width in my shoulders, chest, waist. Kibbe is a spectrum. No one fits each ID perfectly. It’s whichever you identify with most. I identify most closely with FN, but occasionally wear Dramatic styles for fun.

I’m always between D, SD and FN (tall, and with long limbs) but having realistic perception of ourselves is so difficult. I don’t think I have to accommodate frame… but I don’t think I look as narrow as most D’s or voluptuous as most SD’s. When I wear clothes with open necklines they are usually “too wide” for me, I have to keep adjusting them falling all the time. Because of that I think I’m probably not a N after all (also, messy hair just makes me look, well, messy). My cousin on the other hand, I’m almost sure she’s a SN, and she looks STUNNING, on wide necklines. My mom too! Both of them have typically wide shoulders. However, my mom is tiny (small hands, feet, short limbs) so I’m almost sure she’s a FG!

I KNOW I have width. I don't look broad, but I definitely have flat, square shoulders, and where fabric falls on my body definitely expresses width, BUT I used to actually go down a size in my tops, because I carried much less fat on my top half. I have a fairly wide waist, and I don't curve out in the double curve type way, but inwardly my thighs are huge if that makes sense. So the fat sits on my inner thighs but not outer. Meaning I would be a 10 in trousers because of my thighs, but 8 in tops, because although I'm broad, I don't carry any weight there. Postpartum and as I enter perimenopause, my boobs are now 2 cup sizes bigger, so my tops are now the same size as my bottoms (although some dresses, depending on cut) are too tight on the bottom, whilst fitting me up top. So every time you say that you know you have width if you have to go up a size in tops throws me off and I'm not sure if I've got myself all wrong

Okay, now I’m definitely confused because I am team dress making 😂 I studied costuming where we needed to work with a lot of different body types. I think I am a SD based on the example pictures of other women. I’m too tall (5 6 / 168cm) for romantic and classic, I have very sharp shoulders and a sharp hourglass figure ( definitely no curve) with a very pronounced difference between waist and hips but my rip cage is comparatively small ( 70cm). So I would look like a pear if it wasn’t for the shoulders. There’s no moderation in my frame but I do have a bigger chest and bum. Maybe the dress making comparison works but at the moment I am rather confused 🙈

Would love if you could slow your videos down and make the visuals appear for longer. I've been watching your videos for a while now and find that I always get frustrated trying to follow along because things move so quickly and the visuals are not clear/dominate enough. This video is particularly challenging because you put two opposing visuals on opposite sides of the screen while keeping your face in the middle. It makes it really hard to visually scan back and forth between them to see what you are describing. The labeling is hard to read. I would find it really helpful if there was a pause after you've described something and shown it visually. The pacing feels really rushed and I've barely processed what you said and not the image is gone and you are describing something else.

I keep getting stuck in my own kibbe typing between some weird nexus of FN and DC. I absolutely have width in the shoulders (have to size up for anything with a closed back lol), but I'm told I have what is considered more "delicate dramatic" bone structure for the rest of my body. At this point I am just trying styles on to see what is the most flattering and going from there.

@@jkv5332 Feel free not to answer if it is private, but I recently realized I am slightly hypermobile, which makes my joints sit "looser" in their sockets. As a result, different muscles than normal develop to "hold them in place." I think it is part of the reason I have highly developed shoulders (despite not being athletic) compared to the rest of my body proportions. (The same applies to why I probably have "fiddle hips," if you've ever heard of those). If you think you might be, this could potentially be a reason. I think those of us with hypermobile body types may have a harder time fitting cleanly into the Kibbe system. Learning about the Kibbe system has actually made me finally LIKE myself and appreciate and understand all the features of my body more. I feel like understanding the principles he uses like curve, width, frame versus flesh, etc, have helped me so much more than the "apple pear rectangle" stuff in picking what to wear.

Original quotes from Kibbe about width: 1. "ribcage...waist...hips...are not relevant... That´s why they are not on the list." 2. "Width doesn´t mean bulk, or fat, or unfeminine, or baggy, or shapeless, or ANY of the unflattering ideas some people have associated it with. It simply describes the proportion of the upper body as it relates to the rest of your body. You could easily be a size 0 and weigh 90 lbs soaking wet and have width. Some of the most famous bombshells of all time have width." I have screen shots in case there are doubts.
