Took my test in 1977 after 5 hours of driving lessons and, we had to do all the reverse parking, hill starts etc. if we got one thing wrong we failed. A trained monkey can pass a test these days because of the allowed minor errors allowed. Oh and 3 point turns, yep in only 3, were carried out in cars without power steering.

Basically, 1. Advisory speed limit is not the law. 2. You are marked based on your judgement of the speed acording to the conditions. 3. You can both fail and pass while driving over or under the advisory speed limit, depending on the situation.

I did my driving test on an August weekday, around 3pm. At one point I drove past a sign which said "School. 20 when lights show" and the lights were flashing. My examiner asked me if I knew what it meant, I said it was so you slow down because there might be school children around, and he said "yeah exactly, but there's no children because it's the school holidays so just ignore it" so I did just that and passed.
@user-mv5zt8qd9l

I had an examiner essentially tell my learner to ignore advised 20s as they'd been put in for resurfaced roads (loose chippings) but the road was smooth again on the day of the test. In my experience, examiners will advise you a bit when it comes to temporary roadworks on a test route. The school warning signs in my area light up even on weekends.

For the most part, my route home from work is along various roads with a speed limit of 50mph. There are a couple of places with advisory limits - one of 30mph around a sharpish bend and another several miles further on where it's recommended you do no more than 40. I would absolutely not want to take that advised 30mph bend at much more than 35; it's really not easy to see what might be there and there's a road joining at or just after it. Thank you for putting these videos up; they're very helpful to drivers of all levels of experience!

I had this exact scenario on my test in ~2005. I told the examiner exactly why I was going to go faster than the advisory limit - a blind summit after a bend on a road resurfaced multiple weeks ago. I was given a minor by the examiner for exceeding the advisory, regardless of the conditions. I was told it would have been a major had I not voiced my thinking. Your comments suggest the examiner's reasoning was wrong!

the 20mph stone-throw sign is based on the good old days when (now vintage) cars had plain glass windows. So if you see an oncoming vintage car and there's stone chippings or other detritus, definitely consider slowing down. On the other hand some bend speed advisories are far more relevant to high centre of gravity vehicles (loaded trucks) and most modern cars should be able to take the bend at 'regular speed' (careful phrase there ;-) Nice reminder, thank you.

Even though I passed two years ago, I still learnt something from this video. Because I am so used to being on smart motorways with enforced variable speed limits that when they appear are compulsory with a red border, when I've gone to other parts of the country where it's not a smart motorway but has those square digital advisory speed signs, i didn't know they were advisory, for me, I see a sign rapidly flashing at you a lower speed limit and you think their must be an issue ahead etc and because on these smart motorways, if you do over the speed limit shown, you'll be caught by a camera at the gantry where the sign is being shown. I also just assumed the red border around the speed limit was just for physical non digital road signs, plus the fact that maybe these flashing advisory signs look quite old so maybe they didn't have enough resolution or pixels, and/or the fact they are all one color to be able to make a red border around the speed limit so they came up with the 4 bright LEDs in the corners instead to make you see it and take action.

Some years back one of my friends was given a speeding ticket by a copper with a speed gun. This was on the exit ramp of the A12 Jn27 as he was heading into Colchester. At the time it had exactly the same sign as you show at 0:50 although it was on a single temporary sign and the advisory limit was 50mph. I pointed out that this was only an advisory limit, so the ticket was JUST for exceeding the limit, he was in the clear. He informed me that "they're always down there" but I told him it's definitely only an advisory limit there. He made a point of going back and taking a photo of the sign. He gave this to his solicitor and his case was dismissed. The police also stopped turning up on that junction. I gather that the same junction now has mandatory speed limit signs of 50mph but I don't live in that area any more.

There's a roundabout north of Kirkcaldy with one of those left turn slip-lanes that has an advisory speed limit of 30mph. You'd probably put a car on its side going round that corner at 30 never mind an HGV so my advice is to take these with a large pinch of salt.

I feel like I got seriously lucky. On my test I went on a 50/60mph road I had never been on in lessons and was in an area I wasn't too familiar with. There were a series of hairpins and S-bends with an advisory 40mph limit, however there was no signs just faded road markings for the advisory limit. After those corners, I stayed at 40mph unsure if it was an advisory or actual speed limit. There was no speed limit posts after those corners, and luckily it was only maybe 600m until the end of the road where it went back to 30mph at the junction. I remember that moment feeling like an age and wasn't sure if I had failed already. Reason why I was lucky, was that it was a single carriageway, and the whole time there was a lady behind me and it was a Friday morning (probably on her way to work), if she took it upon herself to overtake me regardless if there was a safe opportunity for her, I knew I would have failed regardless if the examiner would have failed me for not going back to the speed limit. I even mentioned it after the test as I was shocked I passed and he was like "Are you trying to talk yourself out of a license?" lol. F1 job interview on a Monday along with the driving test which success of said job interview heavily relied upon on the Friday, was easily the most stressful week of my life lmao.

You should check out bramcote island, an interesting roundabout near me. when coming from the a6007 to the a52(w), you have to cut across 2-3 lanes of traffic in one go right before your exit. Its got traffic lights but im never sure how to indicate because just before you exit theres an entrance to the roundabout that's supposed to give way, and a right indication to show changing lanes would confuse them and a left indication would confuse traffic behind. so i dont signal at all

I find the issue with the advisory limits, learners seeing them and going too slow is the fact there is no sign saying when the advisory limit ends. In my area, most schools have an advisory 20 like the sign you showed but there is no sign saying when that “ zone “ ends. On a Day where the school is not in for example, it means a learner can see the sign, drive at 20mph when the road is empty and they don’t know when to go back to a better road speed. OK, it shouldn’t happen but pupils sometimes panic on test. This means, they drive way too long at the inappropriate speed rather than clearing the school area and getting back to a better speed which can then generate a serious fault.
@R04drunner1
@R04drunner1 Ай бұрын
The 20 mph advisory signs will typically have a sign on their back giving the normal speed limit. So cars exiting the low speed zone are alerted that the low speed zone has finished. Those signs are there but they are small and easily missed. Even if you miss those small signs showing restoration of normal speed, you can still tell where the zone ends just by the fact you are passing the warning 20 mph signs for traffic going in the opposite direction.

Blue circle sign with a 70 ... in the car park!!! i.e. 70 MPH minimum. Never saw anyone obeying it. I think there was some text below the circle referring to 70MPH being the maximum on the motorway, but written in a way that did not mandate or restrict the sign and so ... 70MPH minimum in that car park.

I'm not at all familiar with UK street rules and laws. But this sounds very ambiguous. If I see a speed sign in Germany (and it's not disqualified by some kind of extra sign like "just on workdays" or like the example with the flashing lights on the sign) I have to abide by it. Especially in a driving test it's not on me to check if the street surface still justifies the sign. Are there instances where I ignore the sign because the road construction was finished 2 months ago and someone obviously forgot to take the sign away? For sure. But following the sign should not lead to a penalty in the driving test. Edit: I just remembered a similar ambiguous additional sign for a speed limit in Germany: "bei Nässe", "when (the surface) is wet. It sounds clear but what exactly does "wet" mean? According to court decisions, wet means standing water which basically means "wet af".

I think that if you were involved in an accident and you had been exceeding the advisory speed limit, there are other offences such as driving without due care and attention. I agree sometimes they aren't needed like got 1 section of road that had chippings more than a year ago, and the signs are still out warning drivers. but there are also times when you should follow them even though driving has been plain sailing all night without any signs of trouble. I came across a 30 mph speed advisory sign the one night, and just as I thought it was clear I entered an open section of motorway, and the wind was literally forcing the car to go for 3rd lane rather than just a light breeze, and I knew the section of motorway so wasn't like it should have been a 30 advisory limit especially as it was so smooth up to that point. so while advising not to stick to an advisory, it is good if the learner takes in the advisory and drives appropriate to what the advisory might be warning as well. as don't get noticeboards saying about the next game at the stadium is date and time, or don't drink and drive, or using mobiles is illegal, while yes they are important, they don't notify you of wind gusts very often.

Was in a Nissan Micra, i could have probably parked the car in the width restriction and still gotten out - yet the examiner failed me for going through at 30mph. Ended up arguing with them, but theres no point - they think they are God. Nowadays i drive a pickup truck, and still rarely slow down for width restrictions. Sure there are some which are tight need care and attention, but the vast majority are not something you need to slow down for if you position your car correctly.

Richard, another thing you could do a video on, is insurance prices before and after an accident, including an accident that isn't your fault, as people seem to think that not being at fault will not increase their insurance prices, even though they hand the video footage to the insurance backing up their claim, and proving they done everything possible to avoid an accident. like had an inexperienced teenager last year write my car off after hitting the passenger wing while pulling out of a t-junction. this year tried renewing my insurance for a new car, and it was a massive price difference between my current insurance, and the company I was with, a massive £360 a year, or around £400 compared to my other car which was more powerful. and that is a 47 year old, 15 years no-claims, held a full UK licnece for 30 years, and only 1 accident in the passed 5 years being a year last August, which video footage was provided., and I was 100% not at fault for the collision. as my front end was not facing his car at all to reduce the impact speed to only his sideways hit into my car, no injuries reported even though was a heavy impact that shunted my car 2 feet onto the wrong side of the road.

A question for Richard or anyone knowledgeable in this area. On the A92 and A90, both dual carriageways, at night they shut both side down to one lane. Miles, and I mean miles before the road workers are, the cones filter you into one lane, with a mandatory 10mph speed limit. I say mandatory because, its two signs, with 10 in them and the red circle round them. Going 10mph for miles without and sign of a worker at all, I feel is dangerous and irresponsible. Would I be prosecuted for speeding if I do 40mph? Or could I be prosecuted if I do 10mph, and someone ploughs into the rear of me?

Being an Approved Driving Instructor certainly makes me more worried about the possibility of getting points on my licence so I'm particularly careful and try my best not to make an error but I'm not perfect and mistakes will happen. As restrictions get increasingly tighter, the roads begin to feel more and more like a trap. If I've been used to doing 30mph on a section of road for 20 years and suddenly it gets a 20mph limit it can be a hard adjustment to make.

Hi Richard, would you be able to do a detailed video on how to correct parkings when it goes wrong. In different situations like in reverse bay park if the right side too far away from the line and left side was over the line, then in other situation, right side on the bay line, then right front wheel on the bay line and the car is not straight, then right back wheel on the line and car is not straight, and these kind of situations in forward parking as well. I mean the situations when a learner faces while trying to park. The parking may not be perfect. If they are sure how to correct things, then they will be less anxious at the test. Then in parallel parking when the tyre is going to hit the kerb how to adjust, then if the car is not close to the kerb how to adjust and so on. Actually we learners should be more aware about how to correct things when things go wrong. Everyone teaches to park perfectly but when we practice car may not be in the correct place and we turn the wheel here and there and confused and panic. Would u be able to help with this?

its unreal how many 40 mph warriors are out there these days. like 40 is the new unofficial speed limit for half the 60s around here. little do they appreciate that they would fail their tests driving like that

@@ihavenousername1805 Check up on your highway code, the national speed limit sign, the one with the black stripe, on a single carriageway road = 60 mph speed limit. It has been since I passed the test in 1982 at least. Plenty of those roads round where I live full of people driving at 40-45mph.

Saw you today in the Supermarket. 👍 What is your opinion of the 30 mph speed limit going down Clingoe Hill ? Have you noticed cars travelling in the right lane when they reach the roundabout & the sign clearly says no left turn & they do !
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 2 ай бұрын
I think it's appropriate to have a lower limit through road works, 30mph seems lower than normal but it's not for long so I'm not bothered by it. Yes, many people have been turning left from the right lane for a very long time on that mini roundabout. Doing something on the road that goes against the rules and the system can create danger as others aren't expecting it, this happens often there.

I think what doesn't help with that junction is how much even experienced drivers hesitate to go. I was turning onto that road from the direction of Tesco with someone, and multiple vehicles began undertaking us because the driver in front was missing multiple clear opportunities to pull out. I think it's a combination of people both not planning ahead far enough (IE, people not bothering to see the signage to get in the correct lane) and people who do know better but choose not to as they can beat the hesitant drivers into emerging.

So how did it go? Even if you failed, treat it as a learning experience. I failed my first test and felt devastated. I only narrowly passed on the second try. A few years later I took and passed an IAM Advanced Driving test, so that's proof a driving test fail isn't the end: it's simply an opportunity to correct one's mistakes and improve as a driver. If I could do it, I am sure you can.

As explained, you can tell if a road surface is loose by the sound of chippings being thrown up under your vehicle. You should be able to survey how your vehicle is handling the road surface as part of being a skilled driver.

What do you mean by that? If you mean "Not worthy of being faulted" I think thats just your instructor wanting to put a point across. If you mean something like "not worthy to be driving" then thats cause of multiple or a particularly terrible dangerous fault aborting the test

What I've found from recording people's test routes is that roads with poor signage and areas where other drivers tend to get in the wrong lane / cut you off dangerously are avoided by examiners. They're there to test your driving, but they make sure it's fair.

Basically just use common sense lmao if the road is soaking wet and it’s a national speed road I tend to do a little over the advisory if I feel comfortable enough to do so even on some roads that don’t have the advisory signs but it’s bucketing it down and there soaking and slight flooding reduce your speed use your common sense is is it safe to be going 60 in the UK back roads when it’s bucketing it down and huge puddles are forming probably not 😂😂
