This scene pushes ledger ahead of Nicholson's joker imo. When Nicholson's joker fell to his death he screamed in fear. Ledger's joker was just happy and pleased that he pushed batman to the point of killing him. Then came the sobering disappointment of being saved by batman. Nicholson's joker was actually reversed in that he was sort of killed by batman's grapple as opposed to saved

This scene is so perfect on so many levels, for starters it proves Batman is right because the people of Gotham won’t do it(yeah they get close but they rather sacrifice themselves than lose the moral high ground), secondly it’s a perfect climax to the Conflict between Batman and the Joker, Third the Joker falling below only to be saved by Batman shows that Bruce won’t sacrifice his morality ergo he’s incorruptible(Before anyone mentions Harvey Dent, Bruce didn’t kill him, sure he didn’t save Harvey but how could he save Harvey and Jim’s son at the same time? If he tried to grab Harvey he’d have no spare hands, probably letting himself,Harvey and the boy fall whilst Bruce would be fine due to the Body armor, I doubt Harvey or Jim Jr would be)

@greyistight Wonder if it would've been about a fake son. He always seems to attach something to the person he's telling the story. Gambol was a big brutish guy, so he talks about daddy issues, masculinity run amok. Rachel, someone he thought was attractive, came up with the twisted lovey-dovey story of his gambling wife. Joker's smart, I think he could see that Batman transparently has had some early catalyst for going down the path of being a super-vigilante.

I love this moment compared to Burton’s version where Batman doesn’t even try to save him. It really does a good job at subverting expectations whilst keeping Batman in character. From everything we saw up until, we the audience probably all thought Bruce was going to let the Joker fall to his death out of vengeance for killing Rachel, permanently scarring, and causing absolute mayhem in Gotham for weeks or months (the passage of time isn’t really specified but I’m personally banking in weeks). However, Bruce probably noticed a pattern with 3 of Joker’s plans (the hostage situation, the hospital bomb, and thd boats) that the point of the plan was to force the test subjects to be the cause of someone’s death. So, he decides that no, he wasn’t going to allow Joker to reach the climax he wanted (as far as he knew at the time). Great scene. HOWEVER, I’m no physics expert but feel like Batman catching the Joker so suddenly in midair at that velocity probably would broken the Joker’s neck or at the very least popped something. Can anyone more versed in the topic confirm or deny this?
