Excellent video. I have show box after shoe box of 2 1/2" blocks. One of these days, they will become a checkerboard. My pie for PI day will be apple - - if my son comes over to peel the apples. Since he was a young boy the promise in this household has been "anytime I find peeled apples, I will make a pie". I haven't gone back on this promise - many a Sunday morning, I awoke to a nice bowl of peeled apples. As an adult, he continues to peel the apples!

Toward the end of the video, doing the strips of 6 makes it able to make them all the same, start with a dark, end with a light. Then you just flip every other one to get the checkerboard.

@@nancywatts1167 good for you! I started quilting at 60, 3.5 years ago. I bought my first sewing machine- a budget Brother- and it's doing fine. Just bought a walking foot to try straight line machine quilting. I was surprised by how much I loved quilting!

Pat, you inspired me to cut up my scraps into 21/2 inch squares. I now find my self using them quite often. I really liked your method of sewing these together. Will start sewing as I'm quilting something else.

I love your pretty checkerboard quilts! They must be fun to sew in between more intricate sewing, and I love the idea of using them for leaders and enders...or save them up and do a checkerboard marathon-- that sounds fun, too!

I have color coded boxes of scraps. Some are large enough to use in applique, but others are smaller. What a great ways to use them. I had been making 'crumb' squares usung scraos in all shapes & colors until I had about a 9" square. I believe I learned how from Jenny Doan. This will be a way to use scraps in a new way Thank you so much!

I like all your checkerboards but really like the multi-colored one. And the "twosies" :) I laughed when you said that as I first heard that on Fons & Porter-Marianne was with her daughter on that episode & were talking about "twosies" & "foursies"!! My now 11 yr old granddaughter wanted to learn to sew when she was 7, I got out random blocks I'd got on Ebay years ago & we started with twosies of course. Then I asked her if she wanted to sew them into foursies!! And so it went :)

Your checkerboard method is interesting. I have been sewing twos, then combining them into fours, eights, etc. Making one long chain of squares, alternating with light and dark start and stops before sewing the rows together so I can press them all to the dark before piecing two rows together. I sewed rows of 20 squares to make a 40x40 baby size checkerboard quilt in pink/white-ish. Working on one in blues now that I hope will be big enough for a lap or twin size quilt. Love your idea on storing them in individual shoeboxes. Mine are all jammed into one box which gets awfully messy at times. By the way, these are all blocks left over from two traffic jam quilts. I just got a little carried away cutting my scraps into squares!

I’ve got a small mess. I did 2 at a time then sewed 4 together then sewed those to another 4 and sew on. I should’ve stopped when some of these blocks got knocked off temporary design wall. I was so excited to start sewing again. Especially since all my blocks and seams were nesting. I got too excited too early and well now I have a bunch of twisted sisters. I don’t know if you’ve heard that phrase before but my sewing instructor told me that’s where my seams don’t lay flat ones going one way one’s going the other. Then I started getting the sniffles then I realized I was getting chills then I realized I had to put everything down and stop and do only the most necessary things for my husband and granddaughter any advice. Do I start over? Do I donate it to someone has the patience for stitch picking?

Will a quiche work as a 🥧pie? It has a crust🤭 Are most checker board quilts usually only 2 colors?
@ellenhofer33433 жыл бұрын
I've made super scrapy quilts using just 2½" squares Pat's quilts are called checkerboard because they are 2 colors like a checkerboard used in the games of checkers & chess.

When sewing your squares together, do you iron the seams open? That's the problem I've come up with.
@ellenhofer33433 жыл бұрын
I've started ironing all my seams open on my quilts. It works better for me than ironing to the 'dark' side. Easier to match seams & there's no big bump to sew over and still make sure seams lined up.
@diannplatt-roberts86923 жыл бұрын
@@ellenhofer3343 yes that has worked best for my scrappy things also. Been making a lot of dog/cat beds lately and they don't care.
@pjinlaca54893 жыл бұрын
Ok, another question. Confetti Candy doesn’t follow the same pattern as the 2 color checkerboard quilts. Is this just random with colors that are similar in value with lights thrown in? Or is there any else to think about?

What size are your block?
@amyanderson67463 жыл бұрын
It would be easier to make strip sets and then subcut them.
@michele67082 жыл бұрын
Last to the conversation, but why not do four patches rather than 9 patches? Then they can all be the same without thinking about which strips start dare and which start light-you just flip them.
@PatSloan2 жыл бұрын
i like to make a larger unit to work with. You can certainly do a 4 patch
@mrains83223 жыл бұрын
I find checkerboard quilts easiest to make in 16 patches, you can make all the 16 patches the same way.
@Perenniallady573 жыл бұрын
Why wouldn't you sew, say jelly rolls, together and then cross cut them?
@PatSloan3 жыл бұрын
For the red & white I'm not starting with Jelly rolls, I'm cutting up odd pieces and left overs. Squares works for me, but you could keep strips. I also get a more random placement with i do them individually

So…, after 11 mins of bla ..bla..bla… Im seeing squares of fabric pieced together alternating dark and light. How else can you do a checkerboard but that way 🤔 Don’t want to look mean or inconsiderate but please respect other people’s time. The video should do or show what the title of the video claims to be. Thank you 🤗
