Very good advice. I'm not a sailor or boat restorer but I have restored many European branded motorcycles. And yes I also drove a long distance to another state for a too good to be true limited edition vintage bike. The guys story was he's a junk collector and the bike was one of his finds. Pictures and phone talks convinced me to recue it. The short story it also was a fugazi vintage 1967. from 20 feet it looked ok. close up there were odd modifications to it. No picture of the engine number before the trip...too much junk around the bike and couldn't take the picture. I was in love. I dug it out of the clutter and the engine number didn't match the production year for the bike. Wasted time and gas money. My advice, have ice in your veins and don't fall in love with a fugazi. Keep looking you will find another one that's the real deal.

Always get them to take a picture off the rego papers and the pin number on the boat there's one on the back and one hidden inside the boat if they can't send you a photo of these things well you just saved yourself an expensive frustrating trip , so simple 👍o yer never hand over money until you have the rego papers in your hand 😊

My neighbor bought an old fiberglass sailboat day sailor for 400 and after sailing it for a long time sold it to a neighbor for $300. It didn't have a title. The parts were worth 1200 easy. The neighbors wife found out there wasn't a title and made him complain about it. We told him he could have his money back right now if he wanted but he knew there wasn't a title when he got the boat. He still wanted the title. He never stopped complaining about it . it was an amazing little boat. He could have had a lot of fun sailing it. But he got mad because his wife wouldn't stop nagging him . Everybody stopped talking to him except his wife. I made up my mind never to buy a boat without a title. I know at least three people that went to buy cars on Craigslist and when they got there it was a different car or no car or they didn't have the title. We are talking about trips across the state that took a half a day just to get there.

Nice episode, useful and relevant. Way to light that D-bag up, too…I’ve bought a few boats (currently living aboard one and restoring another), and going thru the registration, title, USCG documentation and any possible tax or loan liens is clutch. Anyway. Here’s something cool: I was born in Flint MI, I’m a Marine vet and current leo on the edge of retirement with an obsession with old boats. Small world.

so enjoy your videos and the techniques you share. I was wondering if you had ever heard of someone adding a pilothouse like cabin to a small bow rider. I purchased a 1984 17 foot Stingray bow rider with original trailer. I have enjoyed the boat but Since i am the only one using it, i would prefer a small cuddy cabin with a pilothouse structure for using on Buggs Island Lake, where i live in Virginia. But with the flooded market on used boats i can not get my money back to buy a larger cabin boat. So i am considering closing in the bow and building a pilothouse like the one you built on the sail boat. If i decide to do so I will let you know. But i am curious if this would be worth the effort. I am retired so i have time, just no shop, lol. Thanks for sharing the videos and your skills and knowledge. Keep up the good work.

I have thought about something similar. But I would only do it in a vintage boat that had the design lines to support a conversion. Otherwise I think you might suffer from UBS. Thanks for the comment and be sure to subscribe 👍😁

Thanks for the reply. I Had thought i would need to add some ballast to the bottom to help with the center of gravity. I have no idea what UBS is. I do not plan on using wood, but aluminum and thin plexi or fiberglass panels attached to it. I just want it for sun and weather protection. I enjoy being out in weather on the lake. within reason. I did watch it. So unless I add at least an 18 inch riser to the roof over the bow to form a cuddy cabin adding a pilothouse to this Stingray bow rider would cause a serious case of UBS. So i may finish fixing this bow rider up, enjoy it and maybe offer it in trade for a cabin cruiser of equal value. I will continue watching your videos. Thank you for sharing. Has there ever been a small sail boat with an inboard drive system? Maybe i can follow in your foot steps, but add the Goldwing 1200 engine to the inboard prop shaft. just a thought. I am not a sailor in spite of being ex navy. I prefer power. lol. have a good rest of your week.@@motorcityboatwerks

Right! A missing HIN presents problems in trying to match the boat the paperwork. 🤓

I learned many many years ago, check name on title, vin number, ID, etc., then cash appears.

Way to go Joe! He couldn't produce the title and I can think of only one reason to grind off the hull number. . . and for everyone, please remember to get the title to the trailer too (you don't need one in every state for every trailer, but still.) You did the right thing to make like the Roadrunner. . . beep!. . beep!

This does look shady. But a title might not be required depending on the state, age of boat, etc. In my case, I didn't need a title (I just needed previous registration), and my dmv didn't issue me a title (they just issued a registration). If I didn't use a motor, I wouldn't need to register it at all, so it would be off the radar completely. A shady boat might not be stolen. It could just be passed along from owner to owner without need for registration. In this case, the seller clearly lied, so I would have walked away from that situation.

Don't buy a boat in Maine then. Boats are not titled here. When you buy a boat all you will get is a bill of sale and a copy of the registration signed over to you. On a larger boat, if the boat is federally documented at least you can get that paperwork and search the USCG data base. Of course with that USCG documented boat there will be no state registration since documented boats are not registered here. You can buy a million dollar boat here - no title because the state doesn't title boats.The trailer on the other hand must be titled or you won't be able to register it.
