I once saw a job posting for a window cleaner that required an associate degree.

Believe it or not, my B.A. in Political Science opened the door for me to get my first cyber job. A degree was required for the SANS Immersion Academy and that Academy gave me credentials and connections to get my first infosec job. My opinion is that having a degree WILL NOT automatically open doors for you. However, lacking a degree WILL permanently close some doors for you.

B.A. in Political Science opens door to intelligence analyst job with top secret security clearance so of course that could help you to find a job in cybersecurity, this is much more useful than HTML5.

Hey man I just want to say thanks for the vids! I was planning on signing up for a coding bootcamp but after comparing programing and IT I decided to work towards an A+ cert (I genuinely thought I needed to be in school to take it but I just saw I can take it online, so im gonna study for the next three months) youve also motivated me in my weightlose journey!

I'm currently in community college for a networking degree. I also work full time as a help desk tech. Working all day in IT and then coming home to learn more about IT is super exhausting and has kinda killed it for me. At least for the time. Since I'm a part time student I won't finish until around 2025. Hopefully the associates will be worth it. I've been getting some certs along the way as well and I hope to get a security job after I graduate. At that time I will have almost 3 years experience, AAS, around 6 certs.

Are there any part time roles in tech?

The short answer is yes, the long answer is no. Lol. There are, but when I have seen it was contract work or established employees who wanted to cut back hours. I wouldn't say it is common, though.

I think that just having a degree loop hole is almost closed. back in the day when industry was new then yeah a lot of ppls just reskilled themselves and joined but now almost all job listings list degree in computer related field or equivalent work

Yes even for first line helpdesk (where you just patch people through to techs) you need at least an associate degree and preferably bachelors. There are lots of people with degrees out there so why would companies settle for less.

You don’t need a degree to work in help desk answering phones

@@ItcareerquestionsI disagree based on my own searches. A lot of help desk jobs require a bachelor's or 3+ years of experience; it's a perpetual catch-22

Good evening, I ltook an entry-level online course and I absolutely hate it. CTS1133 software. I think I made a mistake in taking an IT class online; their online lab to do their virtual lab tests called testout is horrendous; with the video lessons assigned by the professor (whom to be fair is very responsive and has even met with me) not even coming close to addressing the questions they ask in the labs. I feel like if you don't already know more than just very basic home and work computing you can't complete this course. My professsor who agreed to meet with me even kinda confirmed as much; said to submit the labs and print out the instructions on how to complete it afterwards, then resubmit. I feel that information should be being tought from the beginning. But maybe I'm old school like that. I mean, I feel if they covered the info needed in the lessons such as how to use a power supply test, PINs in different cables and how they fit together, and had a better navigating experience with their virtual lab it would be so much better. So my question is, is there an alternative way to get started in IT, other than a traditional school or college? I mean after all you just need to pass the CompTIA tests right? I spent a lot of time and effort getting re-admitted after several years so this is very dissapointing. Any advise would help.

I've had 3 Testout courses so far and currently in my 4th. The videos are boring and the labs are super long. But after you learn their bs it gets a little easier. But I agree that it's a pretty poor system. Then add that the Testout Certs are not that useful. A lot of people don't care about them or don't even know what they are. I'm in my 3rd semester in college and want it to end so bad
Do I need the CompTIA A+ to work in IT or Cyber Security?
