Dude. As a 37 year old with 17yrs of exp. in one career field (Construction Inspection;) this was an extremely encouraging video. how to get started? Get a job on the service desk/Help desk. People hate it but those are the trenches. The SD/HD path is the open mic nights for IT pros. That's how we get our chops. it gives you a strong basis. It teaches you customer service (that's what IT really is. Just CS for computers). it shows you the ropes. It shows that you've gone through the ringer before. It's literally made for newbies. My co-workers used to work at zoos, pizza places, Gamestops, etc.. when I was on the desk. Trust me, I was so happy to finally leave the desk but I look back on those days fondly because it taught me so much.

Here I am managing a small IT team and I never get tired of telling new folks of these things when they ask me why i know allota stuff about IT. I just tell them: "Build a really shitty pc without internet, install a Xp or 7 on it, try to game multpilayer." Dad gave me a really slow PC when I was a kid, but I wanted to play Half-Life on it. Because of this one really cool game, I tried hard to learn how to make this game work faster so I can enjoy it. The lack of money made me dig deep and understand what could be done to make that happen. It taught me what a CPU was and how to overclock it - Celeron 500 OC'ed to 533, using jumpers and dip switches. In turn, I started to understand what a motherboard is all about. - Jetway 993BN lol! Then taught me self what RAM is and how much you have of it makes a difference. - 133Mhz SDRAM , 96MB (played HL really fast) Then HDD's got mentioned and taught me all about defragging and filesystems. (maxtor 10GB, it was lucrative) Somewhere the input devices and their specs got mentioned and I was deep diving into machine specs - PS2 mouseball yeah! The "3d Accelerator" was introduced to me and I learned about GPU's and 3D animation basics - My first card was an nvidia VantaLT 16MB (Riva TNT model) My dad was cool enough he bought me Creative SBLive soundcard, when they still mattered. This taught me abought PCI and IRQ's and how installed parts and standards worked. USB wasn't much then except for inkjet printers, but I explored a lot with a 64MB flash drive. Curious about the HL "modem nulitplayer" feature, I got me 56k internal modem and Tadaaaaaa - INTERNET ---- Pandora's box of IT knowledge. I didn't even know google existed then. With the internet connection, I learned even more. Got connected to public forums and discussions, got me intp college IT, then things moved rellay fast after my first IT intenrship. I learned networking basics, the inernet, then servers, then more hardware/network equipment, etc.,... moved to becomong system admin, blah blah.,... Nobody would believe me before that. Great work, Zach! Much respect and I love your channel! - Joseph, PH

I skipped my 12th grd and took the opportunity on Qualifi BTEC: HNC Cyber Security provided by a university here as my first step (Finished it this May). It was a great start and all, but it felt too Cyber-sided (as stated by the course). It was where my scholarship applied and flexible on to my family budget so I took it anyway. However, since it felt like it's lacking the basics luckly I found this channel on what to expect on the field. So far, I've got some ideas on what to pursue otw! I'm about to take up HND then Bachelors (if I get to sum up a budget) while studying online courses from Cybrary, Udemy, Skillshare. Recently I finished an IT certification from a small institute here in my area and was unexpectedly top in class. But ranking is just an evaluation, there's more to explore ~ Thanks a lot for the guidance and frequent update regarding IT!

I really like the intro you gave. Was wondering about picking specializations in IT. I've been told it's best not to be too general in your knowledge as that can hinder you later on. Any suggestions on finding specializations and picking the right one would be very helpful! Thanks for the great video!

I want to go into Cyber security. Everyone says it's difficult for girls to get in and i don't know why they say so. I am still down regardless of gender or race, I'm always up for a challange.
@Poots63 жыл бұрын
When people say that, it usually means the industry is male-dominant, and therefore, sexist. It's not that women can't get a job in cybersecurity, but even if you do, your opinion and expertise will be questioned or doubted literally every waking second at work. Of course, some companies are exceptions, but micro aggressions/sexism towards women happens in any career, really, though some less than others.

My only question for you is, how many people have you hired? I’m not trying to be disparaging, I just truthfully want to know. Many people who talk about how to get into the IT field haven’t been in an entry level position for 20 or 30 years. Things have changed, and if you’re not hiring IT positions currently, it’s really hard to speculate on how to do it today (2021)!

I have 18 years in IT (8 years in Oil and Gas / 10 years in Hier Ed). I have a Bachelor of Science in Technology specializing in Information Systems and an MBA. I love my job and highly recommend this field. I agree the community of IT folks is the best group of people to work with. You don't need a degree to do this job as certifications will do just fine. I started off doing software quality assurance testing, IT Project Coordinating and most recently Technical Writing. Give IT a chance and I promise you wont regret it!

Fairly new to the field, I consider myself somewhat of a tech head, planning to study for A+ first and once certified get an entry level job, then I plan to study for network+ and security+ and see where I can go from there. Any tips ? Appreciate your videos!

Tired of the same mundane everyday life I have now. getting paid just over minimum wage, living paycheck to paycheck. It sucks. Started to get into web development a while back, but I think Cyber Security is more of where I want to go. This video has helped push me in that direction. Thank you, and I'll definitely keep watching for more!

Your videos have been such a big help as I look to get started in IT! My question for you / others is when should someone take CompTIA Fundamentals OR jump right into A+? Im trying to figure out if I have the basic knowledge / building blocks needed to study for then take the A+ cert. Thank you in advance!

How'd it work out for you? I'm really considering getting into IT but I barely have the basic knowledge so I'm wondering how to get into the ground floor.

Im an incoming 2nd year IT student and as the semester approaches, I need to learn everything from the start cuz I did not understand most of the lessons from school and I completwly forgot the other parts. So I genuinely want to start all over again since I wasn't that serious when I chose this course at first but now I think I'm starting to like it I guess. I'll start off by doing what you said. Godbless to you sir and to me as well and to everyone who's starting this path.

If you had to pick 2 (or even 1) programming languages that someone breaking into I.T. should know what would they be? I have classroom experience with Fortran, Basic, C, C+, XHTML, and machine language but I would not consider myself fluent in any.
@Itcareerquestions5 жыл бұрын
Hey Jason, if I were to pick a language that would help when specifically getting into the I.T. world(not being a programmer or developer) but a language or languages that would help with the infrastructure/support side of I.T. I would say definitely Python and Powershell would be at the top of my list. Bash if you'll be into Linux. The languages you've mentioned are great if you're looking to be a developer/programmer though. I hope this helps.
