15 Years in I.T. and AV. Couldn't agree more with this. One thing I wish I could tell younger professionals is just be humble. Finding people who want to help you grow is more important.

Good point. Im 1 year into a systems administrator job that i was 100% unqualified for, but sticking it out has given me a good technical foundation and more importantly im comfortable with saying idk. But that doesnt mean i cant learn it.

This is more in regards to work in general, but the #1 thing I've learned is always look out for yourself and never let a company treat you like dirt or drink their Kool-Aid. I once took a bad IT job despite the red flags and refused to leave until they canned me. Sucks, but I learned something from that experience. You should a collaboration video with Joshua Fluke.

You hit every point. Great job. I would caveat the “don’t compare yourself with others” with don’t let others compare you to the predecessor you backfilled. Non technical people have a predisposition of workflow and their expectation of the steps you take, as the professional hired into this role, may be different which confuses them. Use those soft skills to explain 100 different techs/admins/engis have 200 different ways to solve this problem.

The google tip is insanely underrated, i worked in the medical field for a few years and people seem to think a doctor who uses google is a bad one. That’s the furthest from the truth, it’s impossible to know everything. All the best doctor’s can consider the fact that they are not omniscient and using the internet to find lots of information on obscure information is extremely helpful and beneficial to the patient.

Although I graduated in Computer Science just a few weeks ago, I felt like I needed to know everything then I would be job-ready, but as you said, IT is a vast field, and you can't learn things overnight and on the fly. After watching your video, I decided to work on my resume, and I will start applying for jobs tomorrow. Thank you so much. I graduated from ITT Tech like a few months before they closed their doors permanently. I graduated with an Associates and Bachelors and hit up a few forums and saw a couple of opinions that ITT graduates were "paper tigers" as in they were dumb as doorknobs walking in and generally made for poor hires and I panicked. My brain wasn't the living Google that job descriptions made it seem like I had to be. I figured that upon being hired I would have to *hit the ground running* and know everything about anything and that if I so much ad referenced Google then I would be a fraud. Because anyone could do that, right? I took a series of data entry positions thinking that it would make me look like a prime candidate. The only pre req for data entry is a high school diploma so... my skills were drying up and I was no where I needed to be. At age 33, sick of being poor and realizing I needed to get into the industry soon if I didn't want my degrees to become completely irrelevant, I came across this channel and thanks to recommendations have begun self teaching, brushing up on things I used to know, and doing practice work. I'm studying for the CompTia A+ through CBTNuggets and simultaneously shooting my resume to every entry level position in my surrounding area. Your videos help by telling its not my lapsed skills holding me back. It's my defeatist mindset saying things like, "I'm too old to learn," or "nobody will ever hire me because I am literally a human googler". You’re just out of practice bros. You can get it back. We're all gonna make it.

I graduated IT from a lower rated uni back in November and due to bad classes I had and a bad internship experience I got very upset and angry and didn't even bothered to send applications due to insecurity that I didn't knew enough. Recently I have been tired of the state of my life and the job I have (about to be 24 living with my grandparents) and have decided to go back to study, hopefully we can achieve our goals in this. I do agree that this channel videos have helped getting my leg back up.

As an IT Tech with years of experience working in this industry. it's more about who you know in this Area vs what you know. You'll still need to know alot but make sure you have a Solid network to compliment that knowledge. The IT industry is a dog-eat-dog world that I wasn't mentally prepared for. But, Don't let my experience discourage you. I have worked in the financial and government sectors which is fast moving, high pressure and constantly changing environment.

Around and before the 8:00 minute mark, this is 100% true. Got into IT because I love anything and everything within the Security domain, but after having worked professionally in IT I'm leaning more and more towards programming damn near everyday. I still love Security and learning about it, but I don't feel it's my focus professionally anymore. And I'm not at a senior level or anything, few years in and realizing, "You know, this ain't for me it seems." Facts of life, don't feel obligated to stick to a domain because it's what got you into IT or it's what got you a job.

Hey man, I absolutely love your videos. I have a question for you, so I am currently in law-enforcement and I’m looking to make my way into the IT field. I think a lot like you with thinking that I have to know everything before I can even get hired on with a job. I have some pretty good ideas where to start as far as certifications go, but I am worried that no one will hire me because I have no experience in IT at all. I am very good with computers and I am a pretty avid gamer but I know that is not really a qualification lol. What advice would you give to me to have the best possible outcome of landing a decent job with no experience in IT? Thanks man!

I liked your video and the advice is sound. Especially the learning.. it NEVER stops and GOOGLE is your best friend. My advice to my kids after 22years of IT work at all levels and currently a Snr Sys Admin, DONT work in IT. Both my wife and I are Sys Admins of equal experiance, and we BOTH agree, if we could get out and do something else.. we would. Unfortuately that time has past, too long to start another career now.. riding it till retirement. 8) - If you DO go in to IT, have a great hobby OUTSIDE OF IT, something out of the house and away from the dam screen.

I get you. It does feel like you're supposed to know everything, but you really don't. Even the most seasoned IT professionals don't know everything. That's why we have Google and many other forums dedicated to IT professionals. Not sure what kind of IT jobs you're trying to apply, but make sure you have some hands-on experience. I don't know your current IT skills, but if you're going into help-desk/technician level jobs, try to work hands-on with actual computers. Having text-book knowledge is good, but having hands-on experience is invaluable.
