Good video. Having been in the job hunt and recently gotten a data scientist position, I don't think the big division is between having a analytical Masters versus an analytical bachelor's degree. Yes a data science Master's would help, but you're still going to get calls if you have a statistics and computer science bachelor's degree. The HUGE difference is between having an analytical degree of some sort versus having a non-analytical degree. Someone who just has a bachelor's degree in English or history or political science will have an order of magnitude increased difficulty in getting a job than his identical twin who has a bachelor's degree in statistics, computer science, or math. It will be VASTLY more difficult for them to get even an interview. The reason is that the person without the analytical bachelors or masters degree won't get past the HR recruiter to have their resume and portfolio seen by the hiring manager, who's typically a data scientist or data science manager. They're just way too many people who have that degree ahead of the person without one. I would go so far as to say that today it would be easier and quicker for someone who only has a bachelor's degree in English to get a master's degree in data science then it would be for them to build a portfolio and skill with KZbin and Udemy and then try to apply for jobs based on that.

Hi, i have a bachelor degree in Physics, do you think that is a good degree for data scientist?
@mcjon779 ай бұрын
@@bryantorres9127 it's going to be a challenge, especially if you don't have any prior experience as a data analyst. Since I wrote my original comment the market has gotten a lot more competitive with tons of new data science master's degree programs opening up and a lot of folks from the hard Sciences with phds and master's degrees realizing that they can make more money as data scientists. Basically, a master's degree is rapidly becoming the minimum academic requirement for a data scientist position for folks without experience. It's just a matter of being competitive. In today's market, you can be pretty certain that for every data scientist position out there they're going to be several applicants with masters degrees.

Very good video, thank you. One case for the master’s degree is when someone’s bachelors is a non-numerate degree (such as economics, marketing, finance or sociology) and wants to further sharpen his/her statistical knowledge.

GREAT VIDEO GREGG! Is there a place where someone can post their data science projects to get productive feedbacks? Also a video suggestion: An End to End Data Science Project from Conception to Production not to copy or plagiarize it but to understand the data scientist how he/she thinks while going through a End to End Data Science project ❤️

I am getting a bachelors degree this summer in information science with a concentration in Data science and Analytics. It’s seems to be going smooth so far, I have been getting a lot of calls from internships and I am partaking in my second internship now. But with all that being said I’m still nervous about graduating and getting a real job. I don’t know if I’ll even be able to get a data science job since my degree isn’t computer science or statician.

Please let me know if I catch your point or not. You are basically saying if you have computer sciencs Bachelors and have fundamentals of data science, supporting it with coursera courses self projects etc. the best way is the industrial experience instead of MSc. I am software engineering senior year student who works on data analysis by coursera courses and self projects, you think if ı ever get chance for entry level jobs at FAANG companies? I dont want to waste my 2 year with MSc. I dont want academic career either, whats your recommendations

Are you sure about the higher the education level the better? I‘m doing a postdoc in physics and wanna switch to data science in industry - currently, taking online courses on machine learning. The only thing I‘m a bit worried about is that companies might prefer younger candidates.

What about a Data Science MS with an internship at the end? Is it possible to get an internship outside of college? What do you know about University of Toronto's and Ryerson's Masters of Data Science programs? How do they stack up against IBM's and MITx's Data Science certificates. I have a Cognitive Sciences/Psychology Ph.D. What effect do you think that has on my chances?
@GregHogg2 жыл бұрын
Internship outside of college is a bit of a weird one. It's usually a requirement to be in school, for government sponsorship / legal reasons. U of T is great. Ryerson is great, but less great. They're both much more powerful than any Coursera certificate. Your PhD will be tremendously useful.
