Is autism medication something that we should take. In this video I discuss I’m starting to take medication for autism.
Autism and medication has been somewhat of a taboo between people who think like myself where we believe that medication isn’t always the answer to an issue.
That being said I have been to see a doctor to talk about medication for autism behaviour as my autism spectrum disorder comes with some personality and behavioural issues like anger management.
I’ve decided to try some autism medication to see if this is going to help with my personality and moods and also to help with my anger and possibly meltdowns.
Please enjoy this video as we discuss autism medication and the ins and outs with it and come along with my journey and leave me a comment if you have anything to add.

Please, please be careful! I was prescribed 23 different medications (pre ASD diagnosis), for depression, mood stabilizers (thought I was bipolar), and antipsychotics (they thought I was schizophrenic). Be mindful that psychotropic meds can have serious side effects, some permanent. Not trying to scare you. I hope meds work for you, but it really is trial and error to get the right meds.

Yes! I have a friend who I suspect is on the spectrum but has been diagnosed and is on medication for bipolar depression and he has showed next to 0 progress in the 7 years I’ve known him. A couple years ago I mentioned he should take a look at ASD but after a day he replied by text with, “I don’t think this is me“. I can almost guarantee it is him and every person I have introduced him to in the past years have asked me at one time or another if he was on the spectrum. When he told me that he was on 19 different medication‘s I was stunned. I’m not sure what I find more stunning, taking 19 pills a day and the potential adverse side effects or taking that many pills a day and having almost 0 progress

A good start is Adderall. It will boost mood and thought processing speed. It's incredibly fast and very powerful. @TheAspieWorld you can probably study your diagnosis and then treat yourself for any treatable diagnosis.

@@isimonsezI was pissed at my sister for suggesting that doctors might get it wrong when I was on mood stabilizers for assumed bipolar. Year later I realized she was right for assuming I had adhd and another year later I realized I'm also autistic. Maybe your friend is PDA like me and likes to find the answers themself. It took me a lot of thinking about what is the core -me and why I didn't feel better after they "found" what "needs to be fixed". I needed examples from people that are autistic to actually understand what it means to be autistic and your friend might too. My memories are bound to emotions and senses. The words change their meaning all the time but right kind of story, bound to a certain feeling, can open some words so I can more easily fetch the knowledge from my memories. I used to hope there was a pill that would make me be something else, so other people would finally except me. Now I know that doesn't exist and I'm trying to except myself instead. It's a hard road to realize that you'll never be like most of the people but when you find your kind of people, it is kinda liberating too. Just keep on giving clues but try not to make it so obvious as suggesting that "you might be/have". If your friend is interested in knowledge of all sorts, just lure them in by saying "did you know that..." and tell some cool and random facts about autism or maybe "I saw this video about this guy who..." and have a video to show him about a guy who's autistic. My PDA side is very sensitive for people telling me what to do or who to be. Let your friend find the clues by themself, but you can drop them if you do it carefully and undetected.

I’ve been depressed and anxious for most of my life but I always felt like you, like I could just handle it myself and I didn’t need any help. Life is rough, but when you have the added challenges of mental health issues and neurodiversity, it makes it that much harder. Medication has been absolutely life changing for me, but the first week or so on antidepressants can be brutal. I felt sick and exhausted for the first week, and I had to try three different medications before I found one that really worked for me, but the journey is worth it. I can actually get out of bed and function and I feel like a better version of myself. I appreciate your openness and honesty because there is still such a stigma around taking meds for mental health. My daughter is also autistic and takes an antidepressant to help with her sleep issues, and it’s been amazing for her. I hope you start feeling even more amazing soon 💕

The medication you’ve been given just adds extra serotonin in your brain because it struggles to produce enough, so it’s nothing too unnatural and it doesn’t change who you are or anything. I’ve been taking antidepressants for nearly 10 years and I believe I wouldn’t have gotten this far without them.

It was passed down from our father. For my therapy, I learned how to manage my anxiety. One thing was putting a problem or situation in a mental box until I can deal with that problem and not ruminating or going into a panic on it. That's just one, but a good one. Also, panic doesn't help anything so I try to keep calm in general. Thanks for vlogging your med journey Dan. This will be so helpful for so many people. I had been on Zoloft for many years for depression/anxiety. I hated getting on meds when I started but after all this time I realize that I did the right thing for me and my family. My husband and kids needed me and I was not able to function. I remember feeling just like you described. I felt that it wasn’t fair to my family to not be there for them just because I wanted to prove something to myself. I am not saying that this is what you are doing and I’m not judging you. I know how hard it is to go through this and everyone has to do what’s right for themselves and their family. This is just my experience. So, I recently found that the Zoloft was not working but it was giving me uncontrollable cravings for sweets . My psychiatrist transitioned me from the Zoloft onto duloxetine and boy was it a blessing. I have autoimmune thyroid disease, fibromyalgia and several other things caused by the thyroid disease so I have constant pain of some kind and intensity. Duloxetine is the Brand Cymbalta in the US and is used to treat fibromyalgia besides depression and anxiety. I had know idea it would help with the pain as well as the dep/anxiety and after the first week on it I felt like I was alive again. Not being in constant pain is as big a help with the depression as the Duloxetine is. I’m on 60 mg once a day and have no side effects except a big smile when I think about my pain being reduced to quite tolerable. Just sharing this to encourage you. You’re a brilliant guy and you have so much to enjoy about life so try not to be afraid of letting go and trusting that you are actually, in fact still in control and being strong enough to take a healthy risk on trying meds. I love your work and have learned so much from you. In fact I have been able to subtly guide my daughter into having her son tested and diagnosed with Aspergers. So thanks again. I’m looking forward to following your journey.

June, be really careful about withdrawing from Cymbalta. It often causes "brain zaps". It feels exactly what it sounds like. Like your brain just got hit by lightning! You need to withdraw from Cymbalta extremely slowly. A person who experienced the brain zaps.

Insertrelevantusername it can be really hard to learn to manage, but it is possible. The biggest thing I’d recommend is asking if your parents notice certain things right before you typically yell. If they do, if they can let you know you are doing that thing (my daughters body gets really tense right before for example) that way you can thing work on calming down, or walking away to get a breather for a minute.

Answer is yes if the individual has been diagnosed or came down with mental health symptoms(these can pop up if the person has masked their natural selves vs. accepted selves for an extended period of time). I have noticed folks who came from not just supporting but "accepting and loving" home environments have not had to go the medication route and less/no mental health problems. ABA wants a person to mask creating more need for medication later in life.

Just found this video of yours. The thing with medication etc - I object to having to take anything that's going to change my brain chemistry in order to get through the day. The alternative is to be stressed, depressed and so on. Treat it as a helping hand to help you through a shitty time. You don't have to take it forever. Think of it as a plaster that goes over a cut. It does its job as it needs to then get rid of it. I'm sure you worked all this out by now. Sometimes shit happens, sometimes you need a bit of help to deal with it. Shit eventually goes away then toy can chill out again! Battle on dude✊

I both have autism and ADHD so I have to take focus pills on days I have work/volunteer/school. I've been taking them since I was a kid and they've help me loads growing up but I was always self-conscious about taking them. Whenever I went to a friend's sleepover, I always take my pills (I have to take them before I eat food) in a separate room from where my friends are eating breakfast or wake up earlier than them. During red ribbon week (a school program in the US that supposed to prevent drug use in kids), I felt ashamed for taking pills because I thought they were bad drugs that I was addicted to. I've been trying to not take them on certain days (because I fear of being addicted to them as well as them being expensive) but I haven't been able to be as productive and as myself as I am on the pills. I don't like it when people without autism or any other mental disorder and/or illness say we should stop taking medication because they think it's bad for us (personally I think pharmaceutical companies and bad doctors are to blame) when the medication is essential for all of us to function.

One medication may not work for you, an another might, so if you don't find the right one right away, don't give up. Every medication will treat you differently. I tried quite a few before getting to the cocktail I'm on now. It might be a little easier for depression than bipolar, as you may only need one medication. But just as a bit of caution. Good luck!

Did you any ABA(Applied Behavioral Analysis) done as kid? If your family was not really accepting about being autistic and you had to deal with any abuse or neglect that is a factor that has led to the secondary/mental illness. Masking your "actual" self for extended period of time can lead to this. Just a theory I have and I feel exactly that what happened to myself and many others. We would need the medications if we had been given an accepting home environment(just saying things but later treating us like trash is not giving an accepting home.)

@Ben Mangan It really depends. Like they say .. If you know one person with autism, you know one person with autism. Autism is so loosely defined. That's probably why so many so-called professionals don't seem to know much about it at all. Unless they are truly up to date in the medical field. Few are. They just continue to do the same things they've done for the last 20 years. I'm sure few people would have suspected LSD and psilocybin were good treatments for PTDS or severe depression, either.

Good luck to you, friend. I took that a grand total of one time. Really fucked me up. Everything listed on the pharmacy printout under "Contact your doctor immediately if." The worst part was the uncontrollable muscle movements, and the stress of it all lead to me catching the flu. It was a holiday weekend, so my doctor was nowhere to be found. I'm just glad it all passed and the movement thing didn't end up being permanent. Don't let me scare anybody, though; Apparently it's quite a rare occurrence, and the medication does indeed help a lot of people. Nikki Bentley Is My Angel There is no direct medicine for ASD but there are meds that can help with certain symptoms and such. There also is absolutely therapy for ASD. There are people who specialize in therapy for people who have ASD. Talk therapists, speech therapists, etc greatly help people on the spectrum.

No, there is not a medication for autism but for the co-morbid disorders that often go along with autism such as depression, anxiety, ADHD (which symptoms overlap autism) and others.

@Nikki Bentley Is My Angel I speak American English, so it is spelled specialize here. Yes, there are several therapies to help symptoms of autism. While I am not fond of it, ABA is specifically a therapy for autism. Yes, there is a spectrum. My autism affects me differently than that of my children, as it does others. There are core factors required for an autism diagnosis, but from there, there are varying different degrees of severity of which autism affects an individual (i.e. spectrum)
@TheMomKind
@TheMomKind 4 жыл бұрын
@Nikki Bentley Is My Angel Actually, it does dramatically overlap. Much to the point that many are misdiagnosed with ADHD when they are truly autistic. Then there are individuals such as my self, Dan, and two of my three children on the spectrum who have both diagnoses. Here is some information to help you understand the overlap: www.healthline.com/health/adhd/autism-and-adhd

Nikki Bentley Is My Angel ASD = Autism Spectrum Disorder. As it’s listed on the google, “A spectrum disorder is a mental disorder that includes a range of linked conditions, sometimes also extending to include singular symptoms and traits. ... A notable example of this trend is the autism spectrum, where conditions on this spectrum may now all be referred to as autism spectrum disorders.” There is a clear difference between a nonverbal autistic person who can never live on their own and someone with Aspergers. There are also conditions in between Aspergers and Severe Autism, hence why it’s a spectrum. Also, on the subject of autism therapies all you have to do is search up “Autism Therapy” or even look up Autism or Aspergers and go into the treatments section. Therapists who do not specialize in Autism can still be very beneficial. Like I said earlier, there is no medication directly for Autism but medication for Anxiety, Depression, OCD, ADHD, anger, etc can be very helpful (this depends on the symptoms/co-morbid disorders of the individual, though). I definitely don’t intend any of this to sound mean, but a simple google search can clarify all of the things I’ve said.

I was rx a low dose of Naltrexone to take alongside my daily Xanax. Naltrexone is an opioid antagonist and used as a tester drug for behavioral issues and to curb the anxiety caused by Autism. My take - I took it. The underlying continuous anxiety I have regardless of what I take went away. It was beautiful at first... but then I became null. It was hard figuring out emotions since I am so used to the baseline of being anxious, and I go off of that. I couldn't continue. It really did work personally. But such a terrible trade off, I'll take the anxiety.

As a developmental behavioral pediatrician, I'm very proud to see what a great self advocate you are for yourself. Mood dysfunction/dysregulation is something that a lot of kids/adults on the spectrum struggle with and there is no one answer to it. You're on the journey and just take it one step at a time. Research overall states a therapy-medication works best but it's more complicated and has to be individualized.

I took several different medications when I was younger and to be honest, I think the meds themselves caused me to go further on the spectrum than anything else. The moment I stoped taking them is when I started to develop and mature. It fucked my brain all up, and my development as well. Looking back I would have been better off going to another town and to a new school. The educational environment and town was causing more damage than anything. My parents didn’t know any better unfortunately.

It also takes time for them to show results. I had awful side affects for the first 2 weeks and again every time I increased. I had to ask to slow down the increase in dosage because it felt non-stop, that helps ^_^ I’m fine now too!

Seems like I am lucky, taking medication for epilepsy, don’t have any attacks anymore so that medication is working very well. But one is a tranquiliser and think that helps with way less anxiety. Other than that, natural tranquilisers when needed. Haven’t taken that in a while. But they are very effective: Birol or rescue tablets. Birol is just stronger than resque tablets. And iron if the tranquilisers make me tired. Not easy being a stay at home Mommy and homeschooling my daughter. It gets tough, but I taught myself not to stress it, like I have this happy positive personality, but stress gets to me sometimes. Do I just ask the doctors. I am 30 and was diagnosed less then a year ago. I am still trying to understand my brain. It's difficult with the outside world demanding things of you all the time. I also have ADD dyspraxia dyslexia and now have been diagnosed with autism. I have researched and the side effects seem worse then the diagnosis. Xx what do I do? Any advice would be great thanks.

I live alone and dont even really have friends anymore. So i have to stick notes up to remind me to do things and even then i dont get stuff done. I have had a pretty high stress few months. So my guess is my brain is just trying to process all the changes and stuff that's going on. My stims and not helpful behaviour are worse. They have helped a lot and I'll need 2 of them forever due to the bipolar, but because I used therapy and medication together I was able to take a lot stuff out. They can really enhance therapeutic outcome. Medications don't fundamentally change who we are, zap creativity or any of that. If someone is on a medication that is wrong for them or the dose is wrong people can might seem different, but it's temporary. The change symptoms.Drowsiness and nausea are common when first starting antidepressants. It shouldn't last though. I hope you are feeling better.
