Swirl marks are only visible because light (or sun) is shining off the edges of the swirls. When you cover them with PPF, light can't do this anymore. Do you see swirl marks when the car is wet? No. Same concept.

True but ppf will effectively permanently fix it. You can't drive a wet car 365.

Polishing the other side prior to PPF would have been a great comparison to see if it offers any enhancement

Ahhh missed opportunity lol. In my experience making the paint perfect before you put film on will definitely make it look a little better. When it comes to doing an entire car it's pretty important to remember that that's kind of an insurance stuff to make sure there's no weird imperfections or dust or dirt that could be stuck to the clear coat that later ends up being like a dust nib in your PPF. So it kind of treated as like intense prep too.

Some PPF films will cover 2500 sanding papers. Also, I always explain to the customer depending on how the paint looks that is best to at least polish the paint before adding PPF.

Good points and demo 👍 I wish I would have done a full front end ppf to my black Lexus IS250 when she was new. That Asian clear is so buttery soft, she got bead blasted to death on a 5 year city commute 😭 There are too many rock chips to count. My rock chip game is not 100% perfect, but she would be a prime example on a demo like that.

Ppf can definitely be helpful on dailys that rack up a lot of miles. Especially if your primary drive is on the highway. If your doing under 40mph all the time it's not really going to be a big difference in my opinion.

Oh man. I totally should have done that!!! Lol. I can still do it but probably not a full video on it. Or maybe I'll do a update on the driver door condition in a few weeks and then show the passenger side with correction!

after applying the ppf, if you hit multiple stone chips you ve to replace the local area of ppf? as a daily driver on the highway i guess the answer is yes right?
@STATUSDETAIL
@STATUSDETAIL Жыл бұрын
Yes you replace after you get a couple chips. Would not replace after every chip that would just get expensive. But if your bumper or hood gets like five or six and it would say it's time to switch it out.

@@STATUSDETAIL Ok and so which is the point to have a ppf? i ve a cayenne gts 2023... i would spend more or less 6-7k for a full ppf... i drive almost everyday on a highway.. stone chips are a nightmare... almost in each trip i get few of them... so in a short time i would need to substitute the ppf on my front bumper which it will cost more or less 500 box. it would not be cheaper time by time to fix the front area of the car by repainting it?
@STATUSDETAIL
@STATUSDETAIL Жыл бұрын
@@jo0o0oke3e3er so the hope of PPF is that most of the trips won't happen because they won't actually chip the film only the really bad ships are going to hit and that's going to chip your film. So theoretically in one year of driving you should have far less actual chips in the car with film versus with no film you have considerably worse looking paint. If you could go say 2 years and then replace just what's battered like potentially your hood or bumper the value there could be significant. For that kind of car I wouldn't really recommend full body so you would only be looking at doing a full front. With me full front would be $2,250. And then you could do like a $2,600 or $3,000 ceramic coating and paint correction plus the detail. You could even add in high level tint and be under your budget

Stupid question 🙋‍♂️ here, pretty sure the answer is no, but I was wondering if you can you put PPF over cured and clean ceramic? The idea being that the glue bonds with the coating instead of the paint, so if/when you ever remove the PPF let’s say many years later there’s less chance of damaging the paint? Some or all of the ceramic coat will get pulled up by the glue? Or does the glue just not stick to ceramic at all or very well?
@STATUSDETAIL
@STATUSDETAIL Жыл бұрын
No such thing as a stupid question 👍 Great question actually. Some people ceramic before ppf but it's rare. It's more common for some people to do a wax or spray wax kinda product. The idea is removal is usually easier. The issue however is that when you do this process the ppf adhesive is less likely to adhere well. So the install process takes longer because edges won't want to stick. It's also likely after a few weeks or months things are more likely to peel back. We currently do not use ceramic or wax under ppf. Durability is number 1. If you did ceramic under the film the removal should not remove the ceramic in my opinion. You may have glue residue that needs removal but the ceramic should be in place.

Hello sir. I have a question. Im going to apply ppf of my piano black trims aswell but my friend send me pictures of hers done by different detailer. It looks ok but u can clesrly see swirlmarks on the ppf in the Sun, i mean its scratched exsctly how the pillars without ppf protection. My question is is it normal? Does the ppf gets scratched too?
@STATUSDETAIL
@STATUSDETAIL Ай бұрын
PPF can scratch but it will self heal. A heat gun might be needed. Or s very hot day. Not all PPF is self healing or good. Lots of PPF available. This was STEK PPF

Hello sir. As you recommended i had my piano pillars ppfed with self healing ppf. The problem is i already have a small amaount of dirt under the edges which wont Come out. Is it normal? Its right under the edge, the detailer says its normal but its ugly as... He says that he can Cut it out. What do you think? Im scared he will scratch the piano trim
@STATUSDETAIL
@STATUSDETAIL 23 күн бұрын
@@MikesPL86 PPF is pretty difficult to do so without seeing the car or knowing very much about the situation All I can tell you is it's possible for dirt to get under an edge especially if it wasn't installed perfectly. So potentially having them do a really really thin trim will basically remove the part that's loose and was left should be totally fine. We do our best to try and wrap these edges so you can't see an edge and even if it did pull up and have dirt in it it wouldn't be visible because it's kind of wraps into a seal for example but not every window pillar is designed this way. Without all the information the best solution would be to either A. trim it Or just have that pillar wrapped again.

I will have to replace the ppf unfortunately. I already replaced one in an other detailing shop and saddly discovered blade marks under the old ppf:( the new ppf somehow hid the blade marks but i can still see them. I still have to replace 2 badly installed ppf on other pillars where i already see blade marks,im scared what the effect will be. Im so sad, this is a 2 y. o. car and already this issue. Thankfuly you only see it from a few feet but i can see them all the time. The detailer who did it had good reviews, lots of super photos on FV and they screwed my pillars. I called him and got a full refund for the job, but im left alone with this issue as i disagreed to let them try to fix it :(

PPF can get swirl marks on it. But it is very resistant. So it's much harder to get them. If you have self-healing PPF then the swell marks and light scratches will disappear when you use a heat gun or even in the sun a hot day. I suspect the film your friend has is lower quality and not self healing.

my shop said i don't need correction... should i trust them? they've an authorized xpel installer (and i know you aren't too fond of that company from this video LOL). i only want ppf so i don't have to worry about swirl marks and i don't have to wear away clear coat if i want to remove them - is ppf right for me in this case?
@STATUSDETAIL

PPF is great if you're trying to stop swirl marks. It's possible you don't need the bank correction but in my opinion it's always a great idea. It's possible you can skip it and still get a clean install. I personally do not like to do it that way and highly recommend my customers do the correction step. I'm literally currently having a conversation about it with a GTR owner who's trying to skip it. I'm working on a $300,000 McLaren right now that's going to need wet sanding on the bumper and the hood because of factory defects. Does defects show when film is on the car. I know because I tested it to be sure. Situations like this with no correction mean you're going to have weird stuff going on under the film and in the film like strange impression-marks.
