Great work as always from Status. We just finished a 2024 992 C2S and also do extensive paint correction prior to PPF. In our experience, we have found that PPF will cover and hide most paint imperfections and we sometimes make a judgement call as to how much clear coat to remove from the car vs. hiding the problem with PPF. Paint correct 100% for sure, but sometimes the cut is deep and the hide effect is safer for the car.
@STATUSDETAIL
@STATUSDETAIL 12 күн бұрын
Agreed! I talk about this in a few videos especially on nasty defects requiring sanding. We aim to remove all the defects and jewel the paint into a ridiculously glossy state and then lock that in. But managing clear coat depth is a serious thing! If your thinking about that your already leagues ahead of most PPF installers 👍

@STATUSDETAIL
@STATUSDETAIL 10 күн бұрын
I would think they do great work but I've never seen it up close. I'm not sure how that business is structured currently either. I'm sure they have multiple employees. So that introduces questions like how many of them do PPF. Do the ones with most experience only do the really expensive cars or do you have a vetaren doing a car with a guy who has 6 months experience? At what point do you trust the new guy to work on a car by himself? I'm my opinion that's over a year because PPF is complex. Most companies can't afford to train a guy that long then risk he just leaves to make all the money himself. Tricky business. I've seen many of the videos on there channel. I think overall they must be doing a great job and are a good source of detailing information. Todd appears to be a top notch detailer. The tricky part is who else is doing all the work. That's why this business currently is essentially completely me. So you know my last car will look like my next car. No inconsistency from employee to employee. Safe to say esoteric does high end work. As does Larry at ammo and the other big names

@STATUSDETAIL
@STATUSDETAIL 12 күн бұрын
STEK has 10 year warranty! Theoretically it should last much longer than that if your garage captain not driving it very much like I assume this car will be used. It is however a good idea to remove it around 8 9 10 years old is if you wait too long it can be difficult to remove. But that's more common when a car is like outside every day.

Great job!!! I have a question. I was recently looking at a Mercedes GLE580 and the paint has TONS of orange peel. It kinda makes the car look cheap for $97K. Without wet sanding it, would there be a way to polish it and then add PPF to "smooth" out the orange peel look?
@STATUSDETAIL
@STATUSDETAIL 12 күн бұрын
Sanding is th only fix. In some situations I feel like STEK PPF actually made the orange peel a little nicer looking and some 9/11s that I've done but it's pretty subtle. Unfortunately BMW Mercedes and Audi all have pretty aggressive orange peel. We just bought an X5M competition as a family car and that also has pretty gnarly orange peel for an over six figure car. I agree it's unfortunate but I'm used to it and was prepared for it so my expectations are low for paint on those cars lol.

How are you drying the car after your second wash?
@STATUSDETAIL
@STATUSDETAIL 9 күн бұрын
After the car is paint corrected I basically blow dry the car to 99% dry. Then I take a brand new clean microfiber towel with with gyeon prep. To do a very light wipe down of any residual water and then begin the PPF. When a car is fully finished and I'm washing it like for maintenance that process is similar I'm still going to blow dry it until it's basically completely dry but then I'll take something like gtechniq ceramic sealant "C2" spray that once or twice on the panel and then dry it with a drying towel and then go around the car that way adding protection and getting the 1% of water left over

Question: for the front fenders with the carbon fiber vents above the front wheels, was that area PPF film protected eventually? In the video the person cut a hole around that area to lay the fender PPF down. Next question what areas were "NOT" PPF covered on the exterior of the car. I saved this video for future reference, if the stars align I would be requesting similar service.
@STATUSDETAIL
@STATUSDETAIL 2 күн бұрын
Great question. So much is not shown. That fender area was cut out as it needs to be cut out to install. Each individual vent has PPF installed one by one after 👍 All painted or I should say clear coated surfaces on the exterior have PPF. Including rear diffuser and partial underside of rear.

STEK PPF is 8 mil and 10 mil. Most people don't use the 10 as it's harder to install and stretch often resulting in more relief cuts. It can definitely have its uses though! 7-8 mil is kind of like industry standard for PPF. We also have double layered 8 mil before in high impact spots like the 992 gt3rs fender areas
@STATUSDETAIL
@STATUSDETAIL 13 күн бұрын

@@STATUSDETAIL Thank you, Sir! My installer lied to me then lol
@STATUSDETAIL
@STATUSDETAIL 13 күн бұрын
@@adnanabbas6900 I'm sorry that's the case! They might sell a PPF brand that doesn't offer the thicker version. Hopefully that's the case and they are honest people. Some people just don't like to talk about the thicker stuff cuz they don't want to inventory it. The reality in our situation is that if you want the film to be really invisible and look really good and have no stretch lines or adhesive lines then 9.5 times out of 10 you want the 8mil. Like I mentioned I think earlier in a comment if there were some really bad high impact areas for example on a GT3 RS or a 4 RS we might consider double layering film kind of like a tearaway on a race car helmet. So after about a year of driving you just pull off that second layer and then you still have the base. My honest opinion I find this more sensible than having a thick 10 well that still needs to be replaced after it gets beat up. At least when you have a double layer and really specific important spots you get to convenience of pulling it off and not needing to reinstall. A second double layer piece is usually a really precisely installed thing too so it's usually lower cost than you might expect.

I don't know if he does ceramic coats wheels, but will that protect swirls on gloss black wheels?
@STATUSDETAIL
@STATUSDETAIL Күн бұрын
I did ceramic wheels. It helps in the sense that they stay cleaner longer and are easier to clean. Technically they are harder to scratch after ceramic but if you rub any grit into the wheel repeatedly it's going to swirl unfortunately. The carbon ceramic brakes don't make dust so that's a big help. If you have steel brakes it's virtually impossible to not swirl them out but a great process will make it happen slower. Auto car wash brushes will destroy it in like a month lol

Wouldn’t think the wheels would need to come off on this detail or car, with 100 miles, there is no grime or build up on the suspension components or behind the wheels. It’s literally brand new, the focus was paint correction and protection with attention to detail at a high level.

Great work. I have this cars twin and PFS did mine, while I am biased I think they are the best in the country and they generally have 20-50M worth of cars in the shop on any given day. Interesting that my car arrived in far better condition and did not require as much to bring it to perfection.
@STATUSDETAIL
@STATUSDETAIL 10 күн бұрын
Glad to hear you had a great experience and the car arrived in good condition! As I mentioned in my video lots of customers pull out all the lights and everything to look at it to find problems but often they don't do that at all Just take a walk around it and say this looks great. Until the car comes to me and I show them everything that was wrong. Unfortunately most shops don't do The steps we do before the film goes on which means if they didn't know this either then your car had all the same problems but no one brought them to your attention. This is very common unfortunately. Many PPF shops especially ones that only focus on PPF don't even paint correct cars they don't think it's necessary. This is more of a philosophy difference especially if a shop begins as a PPF shop first vs a detailing shop that adopts into PPF.

@STATUSDETAIL
@STATUSDETAIL 10 күн бұрын
It's definitely possible to cut through the PPF and into the pain and accident. Good after you make so many cuts you begin to realize how much pressure to make and then you can be confident that every cut you make will only be scoring the film and not cutting the film. For an experience installer it's extremely safe for an inexperienced installer it's a bit risky

I think he's going to drive it to car shows. And I think he'll drive it around town now and then. But I would guess that it'll probably be in a garage decent amount and probably not get tracked if I remember correctly. This is a car that in 10 or 20 years could easily double in value. So you got to try and take care of it in my opinion just because it's so special and it has so much upside and value long-term.

It's always interesting seeing different brands when new. Seeing the inside look at how they stack up. I would say overall from what I'm used to seeing this car stacked up pretty well. I do feel like the OEM orange peel was rather aggressive. Beyond at the most of the things we saw I've seen on Porsches and Ferrari and other exotic cars. So ultimately it's in spec for the auto industry. Just above average orange peel on some panels.

Is cost the reason that anyone who installs PPF doesn’t have the equipment to pre cut PPF templates, instead of cutting it once it’s on the car?
@STATUSDETAIL
@STATUSDETAIL 12 күн бұрын
I could buy a plotter. I could buy multiple plotters and have multiple employees and up my volume of work. But I aim to do things perfectly. Plotting won't be perfect it's just faster but with a cost on the aesthetic side. Bulking is a fully customized install and will maximize the installers ability to make the PPF invisible and reduces many potential defects. A plotter will cost anywhere from 3500 to 9000 plus monthly software. Many shops can't afford that. But many shops can and prefer to bulk. We are one of those shops. Hand cutting is a art forum and it's important to remember plotter installed film won't go on perfectly. So it will require you to trim at times. So you cut on car no matter what. Especially on things like mirrors or any panel requiring huge stretch or any really exotic cars or brand new models. As there will be no software to cut those cars. How I install is very slow and methodical. The average business would struggle installing like us. Plotting is fast and gets cars in and out

Taking off all jewelry including rings and watches may be a good idea. Also, maybe wearing more gentle and softer clothing and not having belt buckle would also be a good idea. Also, wearing a beard cover and hair cover would be a plus. Kind of like a doctor or a chef. Just my opinion.
@STATUSDETAIL
@STATUSDETAIL 10 күн бұрын
Never had an issue with beard hurs getting in anything lol. But good observation. We did this car when it was pretty cold out. I actually wear basketball style shirts often so I avoid belts but if it's really cold out I don't. The space is heated but winter is still winter. Never had a issue with. My wedding ring. I've actually never worn a watch until recently getting a smart watch. And now I can't not use it because I'm so busy all the time especially working on cars that it's the only easy way for me to answer a phone call or see if it's spam and keep working especially when doing PPF. So I'm just very careful about how I'm moving around cars. Put that watch saves me so much time and being able to screen calls and answer on the fly while still working hands-free. I suppose earpods would do the same thing but I don't really like having something in my ears for the entire day which would be like for the minute I wake up to the minute I go to sleep.

Thank you for watching the video and catching that key part of nothing being removed. I'm pretty skinny guy so it wasn't a big deal coating the barrels on car. Not the first time I've done that. You just need to work smaller sections of barrel and sometimes use something to push the towel between barrel and rotor. Like a wheel brush handle wrapped in microfiber for example. Most of the time I can just reach with my hand. Especially back wheels with typically smaller rotors. Coating the face on or off is the same. Cars with 100 miles don't have dirty suspension and it's nothing I can't pressure wash off with wheels on. So honestly it's not crazy necessary unless it's like 20k mile car and your trying to turn the clock back to new.
